Chapter 5: The Photograph He Hid
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
My own face looked back at me.
A version of myself I didn’t recognize.
Confused.
Unaware.
Standing outside a gray brick building with no sign, no windows visible from the angle.
A stranger had taken a picture of me.
And Marcus had kept it.
For three weeks.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“Why is there a picture of me?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Elijah.
Then the coffin.
“Somebody explain this.””
Elijah lowered his eyes.
“I don’t know everything.””
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“You came into my husband’s funeral knowing secrets, carrying messages, and you don’t know everything?””
“I know enough.””
“Then tell me.””
He looked at Ava.
Then at me.
“Not here.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Not here?””
I pointed around the room.
“My husband is in a coffin. My daughter watched him disappear. My mother is terrified. A stranger walked into his funeral carrying evidence he hid from me.””
My voice cracked.
“And you’re telling me not here?””
Elijah didn’t flinch.
“Marcus was afraid someone was watching.””
The words silenced me.
Someone.
Not something.
Someone.
I looked around the chapel.
At the mourners.
At the people still pretending not to listen.
Suddenly every whisper felt different.
Every glance felt suspicious.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Nia, you need to come with me.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because you’re in danger.””
The irony almost made me smile.
The woman who had spent years making me feel like I wasn’t capable of protecting myself was now telling me I was in danger.
“From who?””
Vanessa looked at Elijah.
Then away.
That hesitation told me more than words.
“Mom.””
She closed her eyes.
“Please.””
“No.””
I held up the photograph.
“You don’t get to ask me for trust anymore.””
Her face fell.
I saw pain.
Real pain.
But I couldn’t forget the way she grabbed Ava from Marcus’s coffin.
I couldn’t forget the way she looked at the USB.
I couldn’t forget how many times she said she was protecting the family without ever telling us from what.
Ava pulled on my hand.
“Mommy.””
I looked down.
She was holding something.
A small silver key.
My breath stopped.
“Where did you get that?””
She looked confused.
“Daddy gave it to me.””
“When?””
“Before he went to the hospital.””
The room went silent again.
Elijah stared at the key.
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She stepped back.
“That key…”
“What about it?””
She didn’t answer.
Elijah did.
“That’s what Marcus was trying to protect.””
I looked at him.
“What does it open?””
He swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
Nobody believed him.
Not even himself.
I crouched beside Ava.
“Baby, did Daddy tell you what this was for?””
She nodded.
“He said if Mommy ever found the little black thing, I had to give you the key.””
My heart broke.
Marcus had planned this.
He had involved our daughter.
Not because he wanted to scare her.
Because he trusted her.
“What else did he say?””
Ava looked at Vanessa.
Then whispered:
“He said Grandma would be angry.””
The entire chapel froze.
Vanessa looked like she had been hit.
“Ava…”
My daughter immediately moved closer to me.
“I’m sorry.””
I stood up slowly.
“No.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn’t know he gave her the key.””
“But you knew he was hiding something.””
She looked away.
That was the answer.
I turned to Elijah.
“Where is this building?””
He looked at the photograph.
“I know where it is.””
“Take me there.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her voice became a whisper.
“Because that place is where Marcus found out the truth.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What truth?””
Vanessa stared at the coffin.
Then she said something I would never forget.
“The truth about who killed him.””
The chapel erupted.
Someone dropped a chair.
A mourner gasped.
Ava started crying.
And I couldn’t move.
Because until that moment, I thought Marcus’s death was a tragedy.
An accident.
Something unfair.
But now my mother had just said the one thing I never imagined hearing.
My husband didn’t die.
Someone took him from us.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
“Ask Vanessa why Marcus was afraid of her.””
I slowly lifted my eyes.
May you like
Vanessa was staring at my phone.
And she knew exactly who sent it.
