Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The funeral director gently closed the chapel doors after the last guest stepped outside.
But nobody left.
Not really.
They stayed in small groups, whispering under their breath.
The kind of whispers people use when they know a secret is sitting in the middle of the room.
I stood beside Marcus’s coffin with the USB drive clenched in my hand.
Ava held onto my dress.
She hadn’t let go since she saw it.
Vanessa stood several feet away, perfectly still.
“Mom,” I said.
She didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Her eyes finally moved to mine.
“You need to give me that.””
The words were immediate.
Too immediate.
I stared at her.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked toward the people still inside the chapel.
“Because this is not appropriate.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe she was still trying to control the situation.
“Marcus left this,” I said.
“With a message.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Nia.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
I had spent years avoiding conflict with her.
Years letting her opinions become decisions.
Years hearing things like, “I’m only saying this because I care.””
But today I had buried my husband.
Today my daughter cried over a coffin.
And today I found a message my husband left behind.
I wasn’t backing down.
“What did Marcus mean?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know.””
The answer came too quickly.
I stepped closer.
“You didn’t even ask what the message said.””
Her lips parted.
Then closed.
Ava looked between us.
“Grandma, why are you scared?””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
She hated that Ava noticed.
“I’m not scared,” she said.
Ava hugged my leg tighter.
“Yes, you are.””
The silence that followed felt heavier than the entire funeral.
Daniel, Marcus’s friend, walked toward us slowly.
“Nia.””
I turned.
He looked uncomfortable.
“Can I talk to you?””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
The two of them shared a look.
A look that made my stomach twist.
“You don’t get to decide that,” I said.
Vanessa stepped between us.
“This family has already suffered enough.””
I looked at the coffin.
At Marcus.
At the man who had spent twelve years loving me.
Who had kissed Ava’s forehead every night.
Who had always told me, “If something ever happens to me, protect our girl.””
Something inside me whispered that this was exactly what he meant.
Not from the world.
From something closer.
“Tell me the truth,” I said.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“You don’t know what you’re asking.””
My fingers tightened around the USB.
“Yes, I do.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice cracked.
Just slightly.
And that scared me more than anger would have.
Because Vanessa never cracked.
Not when my father left.
Not when Marcus and I struggled financially.
Not when she lost friends.
Nothing touched her.
But this did.
I looked at Daniel.
“What were you going to tell me?””
He swallowed.
“I think Marcus wanted you to find that.””
Vanessa turned sharply.
“Daniel.””
He ignored her.
“He asked me something three days before he died.””
My heart began racing.
“What?””
Daniel looked at the coffin.
“He asked me if I would protect you and Ava if anything happened.””
The room went quiet.
My eyes filled with tears.
“Why would he ask that?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t have to.
The fear on his face answered for him.
I looked back at Vanessa.
She was watching the USB again.
Like she was waiting for it to disappear.
“Mom,” I said quietly.
“What is on this?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Don’t do this here.””
“Why?””
“Because once you know, you can’t unknow it.””
A chill ran through me.
I looked down at Ava.
She was staring at her grandmother.
Confused.
Hurt.
I knelt beside her.
“Baby, go sit with Aunt Lily for a minute, okay?””
Ava shook her head.
“No.””
I touched her cheek.
“I need you to be brave.””
She looked toward Marcus.
Then back at me.
“Daddy wanted you to know something.””
The words froze me.
“What did you say?””
Ava wiped her tears.
“Yesterday night before he went to sleep, Daddy told me something.””
My heart pounded.
“What did he tell you?””
She opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her voice was no longer cold.
It was desperate.
Ava flinched.
And that was when I knew.
Whatever Marcus had left behind…
Whatever secret was inside that USB…
Vanessa already knew about it.
Then my phone started ringing.
The sound echoed through the empty chapel.
I looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
I answered slowly.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a man’s voice whispered:
“Nia… don’t let Vanessa leave with the drive.””
The call ended.
I looked up.
Vanessa was already walking toward the chapel doors.
May you like
And she wasn’t running away from me.
She was running away from the USB.
