Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
Victoria had spent her entire adult life learning how to read people.
A nervous investor.
A dishonest employee.
A journalist searching for a scandal.
She could recognize fear.
And the manager was terrified.
“Where did you see that?”” Victoria asked.
The manager stepped back.
“I didn’t.””
“You’re lying.””
He looked toward the stairs.
“Maya cannot stay here.””
Victoria’s expression changed instantly.
“Excuse me?””
The manager lowered his voice.
“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””
Victoria walked closer.
“No. You’re going to explain.””
The manager looked around the restaurant.
The guests were leaving.
The staff had gone quiet.
Everyone could feel something happening.
“Ms. Harrington,” he said, “some secrets are buried for a reason.””
Victoria stared at him.
“You know who she is.””
He didn’t answer.
That was an answer.
Victoria felt anger rising.
“You knew that girl walked in here wearing this necklace.””
The manager looked down.
“I saw it when she entered.””
“And you still tried to throw her out?””
His face changed.
“I was trying to protect her.””
Victoria almost laughed.
“By dragging her into the rain?””
The manager looked ashamed.
“No.””
He whispered:
“By keeping people from noticing her.””
The words made Victoria stop.
“What people?””
Before he could answer, Maya appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Victoria?””
Both adults turned.
The girl stood there holding the small blanket the restaurant staff had given her.
She looked between them.
“Are you leaving?””
Victoria immediately softened.
“No.””
She walked toward her.
“I’m not leaving.””
Maya studied her face.
“You look scared.””
Victoria didn’t lie.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised Maya.
“Why?””
Victoria looked at the necklace.
“Because I think your mother brought you to me for a reason.””
Maya nodded slowly.
“She said you would be scared.””
Victoria froze.
“What else did she say?””
Maya reached into her pocket.
Another piece of paper.
Victoria stared.
“How many messages did she give you?””
“Three.””
The answer sent chills through her.
“Where are the others?””
Maya looked away.
“I lost one.””
“And the other?””
The girl hesitated.
“I was told to give it only when you believed me.””
Victoria swallowed.
“Believed what?””
Maya reached into her shirt and pulled out the necklace again.
“She said you would ask me if I was really her daughter.””
The room went silent.
Victoria couldn’t speak.
The manager looked at Maya.
“Don’t.””
Maya turned.
“Why not?””
The manager looked devastated.
Because he knew.
Victoria stepped closer.
“Maya.””
The girl looked at her.
“Is your mother’s name…”
Victoria stopped.
She couldn’t say it.
Not yet.
Because saying the name would make everything real.
Maya whispered:
“She told me never to be ashamed.””
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“She told me I had family.””
The words struck harder than any accusation.
Family.
A word Victoria had avoided for years.
A word connected to a pain she never healed.
Then the restaurant doors opened.
A man in a dark coat entered.
He wasn’t wet from the rain.
He hadn’t rushed.
He had been waiting.
The manager’s face went pale.
“No.””
Victoria noticed.
“Who is that?””
The man looked directly at Maya.
Then at Victoria.
And smiled.
“After all these years,” he said, “you finally found her.””
Victoria stepped in front of Maya.
“Who are you?””
The man adjusted his coat.
“My name is Daniel Cross.””
Victoria’s blood ran cold.
Because she knew that name.
Everyone in the business world knew it.
Her former partner.
The man who disappeared the same night her life changed forever.
Daniel looked at the necklace.
“You really thought the truth would stay hidden?””
Victoria’s voice was quiet.
“What did you do?””
Daniel smiled.
“I didn’t do anything.””
He looked at Maya.
“Her mother did.””
Maya grabbed Victoria’s hand.
Victoria felt the child shaking.
Daniel took one step forward.
And whispered:
“She never told you why she ran.””
Victoria stared at him.
“Why?””
Daniel smiled wider.
“Because she was running from you.””
Victoria felt the entire world shift.
And then Maya spoke.
The quietest sentence in the room.
The sentence that changed everything.
“She said you were the only person who could save me from him.””
Victoria looked at Daniel.
And realized the mystery was no longer about who Maya was.
May you like
It was about what Victoria had failed to see fifteen years ago.
And why someone had spent all this time making sure the truth stayed buried.
