Chapter 9: The Truth They Tried to Bury

Victoria had spent fifteen years believing the hardest thing in life was losing someone.

She was wrong.

The hardest thing was discovering they were never truly gone.

They were stolen.

The rain continued beating against the restaurant windows, but nobody inside heard it anymore.

All Victoria could hear was Daniel’s voice.

I want the daughter who was never supposed to exist.

She looked at Maya.

The little girl who had walked into her life soaked, hungry, and carrying a secret that could destroy everything.

The little girl who was never supposed to exist.

Victoria felt anger rise so quickly it scared even her.

Not the anger of a businesswoman protecting her company.

The anger of a woman protecting her family.

She turned toward Elena.

“You knew he would come.””

Elena looked down.

“Yes.””

“And you still brought Maya here?””

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t bring her here.””

Victoria frowned.

“Then why did she come?””

Elena looked at Maya.

“Because she chose you.””

Maya lowered her eyes.

Victoria looked at the child.

“You knew where I was?””

Maya nodded.

“My mom had a newspaper article about you.””

Victoria almost laughed.

“A newspaper article?””

Maya smiled faintly.

“She kept it hidden.””

“Why?””

Maya looked at Elena.

“Because she said you became someone amazing.””

The words hurt.

Because Victoria had spent years thinking Elena never cared.

But she had been watching.

From somewhere.

Somehow.

Elena stepped closer.

“I wanted to come back.””

Victoria looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you?””

Elena swallowed.

“Because every time I got close, Daniel knew.””

“How?””

“Because he had people everywhere.””

Victoria looked through the window.

Daniel stood outside with the confidence of someone who believed the ending was already written.

Elena continued.

“Your father trusted him.””

Victoria’s face hardened.

“My father trusted nobody.””

Elena shook her head.

“No. Your father trusted Daniel because Daniel gave him something.””

“What?””

“Control.””

The answer was simple.

And terrible.

Victoria looked at the documents again.

The hidden records.

The altered identities.

The erased child.

“He changed our history.””

Elena nodded.

“He changed everything.””

Victoria picked up the folder.

“How?””

Elena took a breath.

“After Maya was born, your father discovered something.””

“What?””

“That your mother had created a legal trust.””

Victoria frowned.

“A trust?””

“For both daughters.””

Victoria looked at Maya.

“Equal inheritance.””

“Yes.””

A silence followed.

Victoria understood.

Her father didn’t want two heirs.

He wanted one.

Himself.

Elena continued.

“He believed if there were two children, he would lose control of the company.””

Victoria’s hands tightened.

“So he erased Maya.””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

Elena looked away.

“He tried to erase me too.””

Victoria felt sick.

“How?””

Elena’s voice became quieter.

“He made everyone believe I had betrayed you.””

The old wound opened instantly.

The accusation.

The betrayal.

The years of anger.

Victoria whispered:

“I hated you.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“I thought you left because you didn’t care.””

“I know.””

“Do you know how many nights I wondered why I wasn’t enough?””

Elena started crying.

“I know.””

Victoria looked away.

Because hearing those words from Elena hurt more than any lie.

Then Maya spoke.

“She cried about you too.””

Both women looked at her.

Maya held the necklace.

“My mom kept your picture.””

Victoria froze.

“What picture?””

Maya reached into her pocket.

A small photograph.

Old.

Folded.

Victoria took it.

It was a picture of her and Elena when they were younger.

Laughing.

Before everything broke.

On the back was a message.

Some people are separated by lies, not by love.

Victoria closed her eyes.

A tear fell.

Then the restaurant doors opened.

Daniel walked inside.

Slowly.

Confidently.

The three people behind him followed.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Daniel smiled.

“Neither should you.””

Victoria looked at him.

“You really thought you could get away with this?””

Daniel laughed.

“Get away with what?””

“Stealing a child’s identity.””

His expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

“You still don’t understand.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“No. I understand perfectly.””

Daniel looked amused.

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

She lifted the folder.

“You didn’t want the company.””

Daniel smiled.

“I wanted everything.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Maya.

“You wanted to make sure nobody else had power.””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, she saw something underneath.

Fear.

Small.

Hidden.

But there.

Daniel looked at Elena.

“You told her.””

Elena stood beside Victoria.

“Yes.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You always were emotional.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Don’t talk to her like that.””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“You really think you’re different from your father?””

The words landed.

Victoria stared.

“What?””

“You built the same empire.””

“No.””

“You made the same choices.””

“No.””

“You ignored people when they were inconvenient.””

Victoria felt the accusation.

Because a small part of her wondered if he was right.

Then she looked at Maya.

A child nobody listened to.

A child who had walked into a restaurant and asked only for leftover food.

And Victoria knew.

The difference was simple.

She was willing to admit when she was wrong.

Daniel wasn’t.

“You’re wrong,” she said.

Daniel smiled.

“Am I?””

Victoria lifted her phone.

“I recorded everything.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Marcus looked surprised.

Victoria continued.

“Your confession.””

Daniel stared.

“You wouldn’t.””

“I already did.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked around.

Then laughed.

“You think that matters?””

“Yes.””

Victoria’s voice was calm.

“Because this time, you don’t control the story.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You think people will believe you?””

Victoria looked at Elena.

Then Maya.

Then Marcus.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“Then you don’t know what I’m capable of.””

Victoria didn’t move.

“I know exactly what you’re capable of.””

She paused.

“And that’s why you lose.””

For the first time, Daniel looked uncertain.

Then his lawyer stepped forward.

“Mr. Cross, we should leave.””

Daniel stared at Victoria.

“This isn’t over.””

Victoria held Maya’s hand.

“Yes.””

She looked at him.

“It is.””

Daniel walked toward the door.

But before leaving, he stopped.

He turned back.

“There’s still one thing you don’t know.””

Victoria said nothing.

Daniel smiled.

“The company wasn’t the only thing your father changed.””

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel walked out.

The door closed.

Everyone remained silent.

Then Marcus looked at the folder.

His face slowly changed.

“What?””

Victoria noticed.

“What is it?””

Marcus pointed at one of the documents.

A document Victoria hadn’t seen before.

Her name was written at the top.

And beneath it was a sentence.

May you like

A sentence that made her blood freeze.

*Victoria Harrington was not the biological daughter of Robert Harrington.*
