Chapter 7: The Person Who Was Watching
The phone continued ringing.
Nobody touched it.
The restaurant, once filled with warm golden light, now felt unfamiliar.
Dark.
Silent.
Dangerous.
Victoria held Maya close.
Marcus stood near the staircase.
“Stay here.””
Victoria looked at him.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Victoria—”
“You spent fifteen years protecting secrets around me.””
Her voice hardened.
“I’m done standing behind them.””
Marcus looked at her.
For the first time, he saw the woman who built an empire.
Not the woman searching for answers.
The woman who fought.
Together, they walked downstairs.
The phone sat on the front desk.
An old black phone.
Victoria stared.
“Why do you have that?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“Because it was left here.””
“By who?””
He didn’t answer.
Victoria picked it up.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then a voice.
An old voice.
A voice that made her entire body freeze.
“Victoria.””
She couldn’t speak.
Because she knew that voice too.
Everyone had told her that voice was gone.
Impossible.
“You’re dead.””
The person on the phone laughed softly.
“No.””
Victoria gripped the receiver.
“No. That’s not possible.””
Maya appeared behind her.
“Who is it?””
Victoria looked at Marcus.
He looked terrified.
The voice continued.
“You found the necklace.””
Victoria whispered:
“How?””
“I’ve been watching.””
A cold feeling moved through her.
“Watching what?””
“Watching you search for a truth you were never supposed to find.””
Victoria’s anger returned.
“You destroyed my family.””
“No.””
The voice became serious.
“Someone else did.””
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your father.””
Victoria went still.
Again.
Another person blaming her father.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
“You expect me to believe you?””
The voice sighed.
“I expected you to ask that.””
Victoria looked at Maya.
The child was watching her.
Waiting.
The voice continued.
“Look inside the necklace again.””
Victoria frowned.
“We already did.””
“No.””
The voice became quieter.
“You saw the photograph.””
Victoria looked down.
“Then what?””
“Look beneath it.””
Her heart stopped.
She opened the pendant carefully.
There was a tiny layer beneath the photograph.
A hidden compartment.
Inside was a small piece of paper.
Victoria unfolded it.
Only three words were written.
Three words that made her blood run cold.
She knows everything.
Victoria looked at Maya.
“What does this mean?””
The voice answered.
“It means your mother knew who betrayed you.””
Victoria’s breathing changed.
“Who?””
The person on the phone whispered:
“The person standing beside you.””
Victoria slowly turned.
Marcus.
His face changed.
Not confusion.
Not fear.
Guilt.
Victoria stepped back.
“No.””
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“Victoria, listen—”
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew what was in the necklace.””
“No.””
“Then why do you look guilty?””
Marcus looked broken.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“That’s what everyone says.””
Maya looked between them.
“Marcus?””
The manager closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Victoria felt the words hit.
“Sorry for what?””
Marcus looked at Maya.
“Your mother asked me to hide something.””
Victoria froze.
“What?””
Marcus swallowed.
“She asked me to hide the truth from you.””
The phone remained in Victoria’s hand.
The unknown caller stayed silent.
Waiting.
“Why?”” Victoria asked.
Marcus looked at her.
“Because she knew if you found out…”
He stopped.
Victoria stepped closer.
“Found out what?””
Marcus whispered:
“That Maya wasn’t the only child involved.””
The world went quiet.
Victoria looked at Maya.
Then back at Marcus.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his jacket.
Victoria immediately stepped back.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a photograph.
He handed it to her.
Victoria looked down.
A family photo.
Her mother.
Daniel.
Marcus.
And two children.
Two small children.
One was Maya.
The other…
Victoria’s hands started shaking.
Because the second child looked exactly like her.
A younger version of herself.
Impossible.
The phone voice spoke again.
“Now you understand.””
Victoria looked at the photograph.
“What am I looking at?””
The voice answered:
“The truth your mother died trying to hide.””
Victoria whispered:
“My mother is alive.””
Nobody moved.
Then Maya said the words that shattered everything.
“She told me I had a sister.””
Victoria looked at the little girl.
“What?””
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“She said the world was going to tell us we were strangers.””
A pause.
Then:
“But we weren’t.””
Victoria stared at the photograph.
Because suddenly the biggest mystery was no longer who Maya was.
May you like
It was why Victoria had spent her entire life believing she was an only child.
And who had stolen that truth from her.
