Chapter 6: The Message That Changed Everything
Victoria did not sleep.
The hotel room upstairs was luxurious.
The bed was soft.
The view of Madrid was beautiful.
None of it mattered.
Because Victoria had spent fifteen years living with a story that suddenly had holes everywhere.
And she hated holes.
She built her entire company by finding problems before they happened.
But she had missed the biggest one.
The truth about her own life.
Maya slept on the couch nearby.
The restaurant staff had brought her clean clothes.
For the first time in months, she looked like a child instead of someone surviving.
Victoria sat beside the window.
The necklace rested on the table.
The first message sat beside it.
She read the sentence again.
Find Victoria Harrington. She knows the truth.
But what truth?
At 3:00 a.m., the manager knocked.
Victoria opened the door.
“You should rest.””
She looked at him.
“You knew everything.””
He looked away.
“Not everything.””
“But enough.””
He sighed.
“Yes.””
Victoria stepped aside.
“Come in.””
The manager entered slowly.
“My name is Marcus.””
Victoria looked surprised.
“You never told me.””
“You never asked.””
She almost smiled.
Almost.
“Tell me about that night.””
Marcus sat down.
“The night your company was attacked.””
Victoria’s expression changed.
“Everyone said it was a financial problem.””
“It wasn’t.””
“Then what was it?””
Marcus looked at Maya sleeping.
Then lowered his voice.
“Someone was trying to destroy your reputation before destroying your business.””
Victoria frowned.
“Why?””
“Because your company wasn’t just a company.””
She looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then said:
“Your mother’s research.””
Victoria froze.
“My mother?””
Marcus nodded.
“Your mother created the original designs and technology behind your first collection.””
Victoria stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Victoria remembered.
Her mother had always designed clothes.
But she died when Victoria was young.
At least, that was what she had been told.
“No,” Victoria whispered.
Marcus continued.
“Your father took credit for everything.””
Victoria felt sick.
“My father?””
“He wanted control.””
The pieces started connecting.
Too many pieces.
Too quickly.
“And Daniel?””
Marcus looked toward the door.
“Daniel helped him.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
The betrayal felt physical.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Because your mother made me promise.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew you would go after them.””
Victoria looked at Maya.
“She knew me.””
Marcus nodded.
“She knew you better than anyone.””
A small noise came from the couch.
Maya opened her eyes.
“Are you talking about my mom?””
Victoria walked toward her.
“Yes.””
Maya sat up.
“Did you find the message?””
Victoria looked at her.
“Not yet.””
Maya reached under her blanket.
Then pulled out a small envelope.
Victoria stopped.
“Maya.””
The girl looked nervous.
“I was supposed to give this to you after you believed me.””
Victoria stared.
“How long have you had that?””
“Since my mom left.””
Victoria slowly took it.
The envelope was old.
The handwriting was familiar.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Only one page.
Victoria read the first line.
And immediately started crying.
Because the first words were not an explanation.
They were an apology.
Victoria, I am sorry you believed I abandoned you.
She sat down.
Maya watched silently.
The letter continued.
I wanted to come back. I tried. But Daniel found out I knew what your father had done.
Victoria’s breath caught.
He told me if I warned you, he would make sure you lost everything.
Her hands trembled.
I hid Maya because she was the one thing I could protect.
Victoria looked at the sleeping child.
No.
Not sleeping.
Maya was awake.
Watching her.
The letter continued.
You will want answers. You will want revenge.
Victoria swallowed.
But please remember this: Maya is not a weapon. She is not proof of what happened. She is a child who deserves a life.
Tears rolled down Victoria’s face.
Then she reached the final paragraph.
And everything changed.
There is one thing I never told you.
Victoria stopped.
The room became silent.
She read the next sentence.
Daniel is not afraid of you discovering what happened fifteen years ago.
Her eyes moved slowly.
He is afraid you will discover what happened before you were born.
Victoria looked up.
Before she was born.
The words made no sense.
Then she saw the final line.
The line that made her drop the letter.
Your father was not my only enemy. Your mother was hiding from someone else.
Victoria stared.
“Maya…”
The girl looked at her.
“What?””
Victoria held the letter.
“Your mother never said who that person was?””
Maya shook her head.
“No.””
Then the lights in the restaurant suddenly went out.
The room went completely dark.
Marcus stood immediately.
“What happened?””
A phone rang downstairs.
One ring.
Two.
Three.
Nobody moved.
Then Maya whispered:
“That’s the phone my mom told me not to answer.””
Victoria looked toward the sound.
“Why?””
May you like
Maya’s face went pale.
“Because she said the person calling would know where I was.””
