Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Lie

Daniel Cross stood beneath the golden restaurant lights like he belonged there.

That was the part Victoria hated most.

Not his confidence.

Not his smile.

The fact that he looked comfortable.

Like he had walked into her life fifteen years ago, destroyed everything, and simply waited until the day he could return.

Maya held Victoria’s hand tighter.

Victoria felt the child’s fingers trembling.

She moved slightly in front of her.

“Stay behind me.””

Daniel tilted his head.

“Still protecting people who aren’t yours.””

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t talk about her like that.””

The manager stepped forward.

“Daniel, you need to leave.””

Daniel looked at him with disappointment.

“After everything I did for you, that’s how you greet me?””

The manager’s face hardened.

“You didn’t do anything for me.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“You really believe that?””

Victoria looked between them.

“What is going on?””

Nobody answered.

The silence itself was an answer.

Victoria turned toward the manager.

“You knew him.””

The manager looked down.

“Yes.””

“How?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because before I managed this restaurant, I worked security.””

“For who?””

The manager looked at Daniel.

“For the Harrington family.””

Victoria froze.

The words landed harder than she expected.

“My family?””

Daniel smiled.

“See? This is why I came here.””

Victoria ignored him.

“What does that mean?””

The manager took a breath.

“Fifteen years ago, your father hired me after there was a threat against your company.””

Victoria’s expression changed.

A threat.

She remembered.

At the time, everyone told her it was just business pressure.

Competitors trying to scare her.

Investors trying to weaken her.

She had believed them.

Because believing anything else was too painful.

“What threat?”” Victoria asked.

Daniel answered.

“The kind that makes people disappear.””

Maya looked confused.

Victoria noticed.

She knelt slightly beside her.

“Go upstairs with one of the staff. Just for a minute.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

“Maya—”

“I waited too long to find you.””

The words stopped Victoria.

The girl looked up at her.

“My mom told me if I found you, I shouldn’t leave your side.””

Victoria’s heart tightened.

“Why?””

Maya looked at Daniel.

“Because he would come.””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Just for a second.

But Victoria saw it.

And that scared her more than the smile.

She stood.

“What did you do to her mother?””

Daniel sighed.

“Always the dramatic questions.””

Victoria walked closer.

“Answer me.””

Daniel looked at the necklace.

“You really don’t remember?””

Victoria felt anger rise.

“Remember what?””

“The night everything changed.””

Her face went still.

Because she did remember.

The night she received a phone call.

The night she was told someone she loved had betrayed her.

The night she lost the person she trusted most.

Daniel continued.

“You believed she abandoned you.””

Victoria’s voice became quiet.

“She did.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“She was trying to save you.””

The room went silent.

Victoria felt like the floor moved beneath her.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You built your empire because you thought you had something to prove.””

Victoria stared at him.

“And?””

“And you never asked why you got the opportunity.””

Her breathing slowed.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel smiled.

“The first major investment that saved your company.””

Victoria said nothing.

Because she remembered.

She remembered being twenty-seven years old.

Nearly bankrupt.

One deal away from losing everything.

Then suddenly, a mysterious investor appeared.

No meetings.

No interviews.

Just money.

A second chance.

She had spent years believing it was luck.

Daniel leaned closer.

“It wasn’t.””

Victoria felt cold.

“Who was it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Maya suddenly spoke.

“My mom.””

Victoria turned.

The girl looked terrified.

“She said she gave you everything because you deserved it.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

Maya looked at him.

“She said you would say that.””

Victoria looked at the child.

“How much did she tell you?””

Maya looked down.

“Not everything.””

“What did she tell you?””

The girl swallowed.

“She said there was a man who would make you think she hurt you.””

Daniel’s face darkened.

“And you believed her?””

Maya nodded.

“Yes.””

Victoria watched Daniel carefully.

For the first time tonight, he looked less powerful.

More desperate.

“You’re lying,” he said.

Maya stepped closer to Victoria.

“She said you always knew the difference between truth and lies.””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“She trained you well.””

Victoria’s voice sharpened.

“Don’t.””

He smiled.

“You still don’t see it.””

“See what?””

“That she never told you the truth because she knew you would choose her.””

Victoria froze.

The words sounded impossible.

But they hurt because some part of her wanted them to be true.

Daniel walked toward the door.

The manager blocked him.

“You’re not taking her.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You made the same mistake years ago.””

The manager’s expression changed.

“What mistake?””

Daniel smiled.

“Trusting Victoria.””

Then he walked away.

Victoria watched him leave.

But before the door closed, Daniel stopped.

He looked back.

“Check the second message.””

Victoria frowned.

“What second message?””

Daniel smiled.

“The one she hid from you.””

The door closed.

Maya looked at Victoria.

“I’m sorry.””

Victoria turned.

“For what?””

Maya whispered:

“Because my mom said when you found the second message…”

She hesitated.

May you like

Victoria waited.

“She said you would finally know why she disappeared.””
