Chapter 11: The Memory I Was Never Supposed To Have

Nia did not remember the drive.

She did not remember walking upstairs.

She barely remembered sitting down.

All she knew was that her entire life had shifted.

Again.

She stared at the memory card sitting on the table.

A tiny piece of plastic.

Holding a truth that had been buried for decades.

Marcus stood near the window.

James sat silently.

Evelyn remained beside the photograph.

Nobody wanted to be the first to speak.

Finally, Nia did.

“What happened when I was six?””

James looked up.

“You were at Victor’s house.””

Her stomach dropped.

“Why?””

“Because your mother was meeting him.””

Evelyn added softly:

“She thought she could negotiate.””

Nia frowned.

“My mother went there with me?””

James nodded.

“She didn’t have a choice.””

Nia looked at the necklace.

“The accident.””

James’s expression changed.

“You remember something?””

“No.””

She touched her temple.

“But I feel like I should.””

James leaned forward.

“Your mother spent years trying to protect your memories.””

“My memories?””

He nodded.

“After that night, you forgot what happened.””

Marcus looked confused.

“People can forget things like that?””

Evelyn answered.

“Sometimes the mind protects itself.””

Nia closed her eyes.

A strange image flashed.

A hallway.

A broken glass.

Someone shouting.

She opened her eyes quickly.

“I saw something.””

Everyone stood.

“What?””

Nia breathed heavily.

“A door.””

James stepped closer.

“What door?””

“I don’t know.””

Another image.

A man’s hand.

A ring.

A familiar voice.

She shook her head.

“I can’t.””

James looked at Evelyn.

“This is what Amara was afraid of.””

Nia looked at him.

“Afraid of what?””

“That remembering would put you in danger.””

Marcus frowned.

“But if she forgot, why leave the necklace?””

James looked at the crescent.

“Because she knew one day Nia would need the truth.””

Nia stood.

“No more pieces.””

Everyone looked at her.

“No more secrets.””

She picked up the memory card.

“I want to see everything.””

James hesitated.

“Nia.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“I spent my entire life living inside a story someone else wrote.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“I’m done.””

They played the recording.

The screen showed darkness.

Then Amara appeared.

Older than the woman in Nia’s memories.

Tired.

But strong.

“Nia.””

The sound of her mother’s voice immediately broke her.

“If you are watching this, then you know about the night you forgot.””

Amara looked directly into the camera.

“I need you to understand something.””

She paused.

“You were not a victim.””

Nia frowned.

“You were a witness.””

The words hit.

Amara continued.

“You saw what Victor did.””

Evelyn looked away.

James closed his eyes.

Nia whispered:

“No.””

Amara’s voice continued.

“You saw the evidence.””

A flash of memory hit.

A room.

A table.

A red folder.

A little girl hiding.

Nia grabbed the chair.

Marcus caught her.

“What did you see?””

She couldn’t answer.

The recording continued.

“Victor will tell you that I betrayed you.””

Amara’s expression softened.

“He will tell you that I abandoned you.””

A tear slipped down her face.

“Please don’t believe him.””

Nia started crying.

“Mom…”

The recording stopped.

Everyone stared.

Then another file appeared.

A video.

Recorded years later.

The title was simple.

*FOR NIA WHEN SHE IS READY.*

Nia reached for the phone.

Before she could press play, the front window shattered.

Everyone jumped.

A small object landed on the floor.

Marcus moved first.

“Get down!””

The object rolled.

Not a weapon.

A note.

James picked it up.

His face changed.

“What does it say?”” Nia asked.

James looked at her.

Then slowly turned the paper around.

May you like

Three words.

*SHE REMEMBERED EVERYTHING.*
