Chapter 13: The Betrayal Hidden In Our Bloodline

The phone went silent.

Nia remained frozen, holding the receiver against her ear long after the call had ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because everyone heard the same thing.

Amara’s final warning.

It was someone you loved.

Nia slowly lowered the phone.

Her eyes moved across the hidden room.

The walls covered with secrets.

The photographs.

The documents.

The names.

And one name circled in red ink beneath Victor Hale.

A family name.

A name that belonged to someone they trusted.

Marcus stepped closer to the wall.

His face changed as he read it again.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Nia followed his gaze.

The name stared back at them.

*Daniel Whitmore.*

Marcus’s older brother.

Evelyn’s son.

James’s first child.

A person Nia had never met.

But a person who had been part of this family’s history all along.

“Who is Daniel?”” Nia asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

That silence told her everything.

“He was real.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Then why does everyone look like they’re seeing a ghost?””

James walked toward the wall.

“Because Daniel died.””

Marcus looked at him.

“When?””

“Before you were born.””

Marcus stared.

“My entire life, I was told I had one brother.””

James looked away.

“Because you did.””

The confusion on Marcus’s face deepened.

“Then why is his name connected to Victor?””

Evelyn sat down.

“I never wanted you to know.””

Nia turned toward her.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Her voice was exhausted.

“Everyone keeps deciding what truths I can handle.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“You’re right.””

The admission surprised Nia.

Evelyn continued.

“I spent years protecting a family that was already broken.””

James looked at the documents.

“Daniel was brilliant.””

Marcus looked bitter.

“Everyone always says that about people who are gone.””

James ignored the comment.

“He was the first person to discover what Victor was doing.””

Nia frowned.

“So he was trying to stop him?””

James nodded.

“At first.””

The words made everyone look at him.

“At first?””

James touched the paper.

“Daniel didn’t just discover Victor’s crimes.””

He swallowed.

“He discovered how Victor built his power.””

“How?””

James looked at Nia.

“By controlling people.””

The room became quiet.

“Victor collected secrets,” James continued.

“Secrets about politicians, business owners, families.””

Evelyn added softly:

“And he used those secrets to make people obey him.””

Nia looked at the name.

“Daniel found out.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

James’s expression darkened.

“Daniel thought he could use the information against Victor.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That doesn’t sound like him.””

James looked at his son.

“You never knew him.””

The sentence hurt.

Marcus looked away.

Nia studied the documents.

“Where does my mother fit into this?””

James walked to another file.

Inside was a picture of Amara.

Beside her was Daniel.

Nia stared.

“My mother knew him?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Evelyn answered.

“They worked together.””

Nia looked shocked.

“On exposing Victor?””

“Yes.””

James nodded.

“They were close.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Close how?””

Nobody answered.

Nia noticed.

Then she understood.

“You’re hiding something else.””

Evelyn looked down.

James said quietly:

“Daniel was your father.””

The words destroyed the room.

Marcus looked at James.

“What?””

Nia couldn’t speak.

The only sound was her heartbeat.

“My father?””

James nodded.

“Daniel.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

But nobody corrected him.

“No, my mother told me—”

“She lied,” Evelyn whispered.

The pain in those words was unbearable.

Nia stepped backward.

“My whole life…”

Her voice broke.

“My whole life I thought I knew who I was.””

James moved toward her.

“Nia.””

She pushed him away.

“Don’t.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“You knew.””

Evelyn cried silently.

“Yes.””

“You knew my father.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I promised Amara.””

Nia laughed through tears.

“Everyone promised my mother something.””

She looked around the room.

“And nobody promised me the truth.””

Then something caught her attention.

A small envelope beneath Daniel’s photograph.

Her name written across the front.

Nia.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside was one page.

Only one sentence.

*Nia, if you are reading this, then Daniel failed to protect you, and I failed to keep you away from the truth.*

She kept reading.

*But there is one thing you must understand.*

A tear fell.

*Your father did not betray us.*

Nia looked up.

Everyone stared.

She continued.

*The person who betrayed us was the one person we trusted enough to let inside.*

The lights flickered.

Again.

Then the hidden room door slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

A voice came from the other side.

Calm.

Familiar.

“You really should have left the past buried.””

Marcus froze.

Because he knew that voice.

Nia looked at him.

“Who is it?””

May you like

Marcus whispered:

“My brother.””
