Chapter 8: The Truth Amara Left Behind
They didn’t leave.
Not immediately.
Nia refused.
“No.””
Everyone turned toward her.
James looked surprised.
“Nia.””
“No.””
She stood beside the dining table, staring at all of them.
“My entire life, people have been making decisions for me.””
Her voice trembled.
“My mother.””
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“You.””
James looked away.
“Everyone.””
She touched the necklace.
“I’m done running from things I don’t understand.””
Marcus watched her.
And for the first time that night, he saw something different.
Not fear.
Strength.
James sighed.
“You have your mother’s determination.””
Nia looked at him.
“Then you should know I’m not leaving until someone tells me the truth.””
Nobody argued.
Because she was right.
James placed the photograph back on the table.
“Your mother discovered something about a man named Victor Hale.””
Evelyn immediately looked at him.
“You’re saying his name now?””
James nodded.
“Because it’s time.””
Nia noticed Evelyn’s reaction.
“You know him.””
Evelyn’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
James answered.
“A man who built his reputation by destroying anyone who threatened him.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why would my father know someone like that?””
James looked at him.
“Because Victor was my closest friend.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
James looked ashamed.
“Before I knew who he really was.””
The confession changed the room.
Nia stepped closer.
“My mother found out something about him.””
“Yes.””
“What?””
James looked at the necklace.
“Financial crimes. Blackmail. Secrets involving powerful families.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You’re saying my father was investigating him?””
James nodded.
“Your mother and I were.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You never told me.””
James looked at her.
“Because telling you would have put you in danger.””
“You disappeared instead.””
The pain in Evelyn’s voice was quiet.
But it cut deeper than anger.
James looked down.
“I know.””
Nia noticed something.
Despite everything, despite twenty years of pain, Evelyn still looked at James like someone she had once trusted completely.
Someone who had broken her heart.
James reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept one thing from that time.””
He placed it on the table.
Nia stared.
“What is it?””
“Something Amara gave me before she vanished.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“You had this all along?””
James nodded.
“Because I couldn’t risk anyone finding it.””
Marcus looked angry.
“You kept another secret?””
James accepted the accusation.
“Yes.””
Nia opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was familiar.
Her mother’s.
Her hands immediately began shaking.
“Read it,” Evelyn whispered.
Nia unfolded the paper.
The first line nearly broke her.
*My little moon,*
Her vision blurred.
She continued.
*If you are reading this, then I failed to give you the childhood you deserved.*
A tear fell onto the page.
*But I need you to know something. I never left because I wanted to.*
Nia covered her mouth.
The room disappeared.
Only her mother’s words existed.
*The people around you may tell you I was afraid. They may tell you I abandoned you. They are wrong.*
Nia looked up.
Everyone was watching her.
She kept reading.
*The truth is, I was afraid of what would happen if they found out you existed.*
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
*The necklace is not a family treasure. It is a promise.*
Nia looked at the crescent.
*Inside it is the proof I spent my life protecting.*
Marcus looked at the necklace.
“Proof of what?””
Nia continued.
*Do not trust anyone who tells you they want to protect you without telling you the truth.*
The words hit Evelyn.
James too.
Then the final line came.
*And if James is the one who gives this to you, remember this: he tried to save us. But he also made a choice that changed everything.*
Nia stopped.
She looked at James.
“What choice?””
James said nothing.
Her voice hardened.
“What choice?””
Before he could answer, the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then went out.
The dining room fell into darkness.
A sound came from the front door.
Someone turning the handle.
Marcus moved immediately.
James grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?””
James whispered:
“Because this time…”
A shadow appeared beneath the door.
“…he didn’t come to watch.””
May you like
The lock clicked.
“He came inside.””
