Chapter 14: The Daughter Who Finally Remembered

The door opened slowly.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel Whitmore stepped into the hidden room.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably the same person from the photograph.

Marcus stared at him.

His entire understanding of his family collapsed in one second.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I know.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because nothing else made sense.

“First Dad.””

He looked at James.

“Now you.””

His eyes returned to Daniel.

“How many people in this family are ghosts?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Nia watched him carefully.

There was something different about him.

Unlike Victor.

Unlike the others.

He didn’t look powerful.

He looked tired.

Like someone who had spent years running from himself.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“Mother.””

The word broke something inside her.

“You let us believe you were dead.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I had to.””

James stepped forward.

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“You wanted to.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You still blame me.””

“You abandoned your family.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“That’s interesting coming from you.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

His voice shook.

“But I deserve answers.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You do.””

Marcus pointed at the room.

“The secrets.””

He pointed at James.

“The lies.””

Then at Daniel.

“You.””

His voice cracked.

“Who are you?””

Daniel looked at his younger brother.

“I was the person who tried to expose Victor.””

Nia watched him.

“Then why did my mother say someone betrayed us?””

Daniel looked at her.

The pain in his face changed.

“Because someone did.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“Victor wasn’t working alone.””

Evelyn whispered:

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You know.””

Her face fell.

Nia noticed.

“You know who.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Daniel answered.

“Our family.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked horrified.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at James.

Then at Evelyn.

Then finally at Nia.

“Your mother found out that someone inside this family had been feeding Victor information.””

Nia’s heart sank.

“Who?””

Daniel walked to the desk.

He picked up a file.

“The person who had access to everything.””

He opened it.

Inside were records.

Payments.

Messages.

Photos.

Nia looked.

Then froze.

Because the evidence pointed to someone she knew.

Someone she trusted.

Someone who had spent years pretending to protect her.

Evelyn whispered:

“No.””

Nia looked at her.

“Say it.””

Evelyn couldn’t.

“Say the name.””

Daniel did.

“James.””

The room exploded into silence.

Nia turned toward him.

Her father.

The man who had claimed to protect her.

The man who had disappeared.

James looked devastated.

“That’s not true.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You know it is.””

Marcus stepped away from his father.

“Dad?””

James looked at his son.

“I never betrayed Amara.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Nia.

“You didn’t.””

Everyone looked confused.

Daniel continued.

“You protected her.””

James looked down.

“But you also made the mistake of trusting the wrong person.””

Nia’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Daniel pulled out another document.

A photograph.

A person standing beside James.

A person exchanging files with Victor.

Nia looked closer.

Then her entire body went cold.

Because she knew that face.

Not from childhood.

From recent years.

From the person who had always been there.

The person who had comforted her.

The person who had helped raise her.

Her mother’s closest friend.

Amara’s trusted confidante.

“Lena.””

Evelyn whispered the name.

Daniel nodded.

“She was the one who betrayed Amara.””

Nia stared.

“But why?””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Because Victor promised her something.””

“What?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“The one thing she wanted more than anything.””

Nia felt sick.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“To replace Amara.””

Before anyone could respond, the hidden room phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Nia slowly picked it up.

A woman’s voice answered.

A voice she knew.

“Nia.””

Her blood ran cold.

“Lena?””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“I was hoping you would never find that room.””
