Chapter 5: The Voice Hidden In The Silver
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The ringing continued.
A sound so small it almost felt impossible.
But it was coming from the silver crescent around Nia’s neck.
Marcus stared.
“How is that happening?””
Nia couldn’t answer.
She couldn’t even breathe.
The necklace she had worn since childhood suddenly felt like something alive.
Something waiting.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“No.””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“No, Amara.””
Nia looked at her.
“You know what this is.””
Evelyn didn’t respond.
The ringing stopped.
Then the crescent released a faint clicking sound.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a tiny device.
Marcus stared.
“Your mother put a recorder inside that?””
Evelyn touched her mouth.
“She planned for this.””
Nia carefully removed the device.
Her hands were shaking.
There was one button.
One chance.
She pressed it.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
A voice Nia had not heard in years.
Her mother.
“Nia.””
The world disappeared.
Nia covered her mouth.
Her knees nearly gave out.
Amara’s voice continued.
“If you are hearing this, it means you found Evelyn.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Tears fell silently.
“I’m sorry,” the recording continued.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you everything.””
Nia stared at the necklace.
Her mother’s voice sounded younger.
Scared.
But determined.
“There are things I needed to protect you from.””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
The older woman couldn’t meet his eyes.
The recording continued.
“Your family history is not what they told you.””
Nia felt her chest tighten.
“They will tell you I ran away.””
A pause.
“I didn’t.””
The room went completely still.
“I was forced to disappear.””
Nia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because of what I discovered.””
The recording crackled.
Then Amara said something that made Evelyn gasp.
“The person who destroyed our family is someone you know.””
The device clicked.
Static.
Then silence.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“Who?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
But Nia noticed.
She was lying again.
“You do.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“Nia—”
“No.””
Nia wiped her tears.
“You knew my mother’s message would say that.””
Evelyn looked away.
“I suspected.””
“Suspected who?””
Before Evelyn could answer, Marcus’s phone buzzed.
He looked down.
A message.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Nia watched his face.
“Marcus?””
He slowly turned the screen around.
A photograph had been sent.
It showed Nia.
Standing outside the house earlier that day.
Taken from a distance.
Her heart dropped.
Someone had been watching them.
Below the image was a message.
*STOP LOOKING FOR ANSWERS YOU WERE NEVER MEANT TO HAVE.*
Marcus immediately locked the phone.
“We need to call the police.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why not?””
“Because whoever sent that knows things the police won’t understand.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“It makes perfect sense.””
Her voice hardened.
“Because they were there before the police.””
Nia stared.
“What are you saying?””
Evelyn walked toward the dining table.
She picked up the old photograph.
“There was a reason Amara trusted only me.””
Marcus looked at the picture.
“What reason?””
Evelyn flipped it over again.
Behind the photograph, beneath the scratched-out name, was another message.
A message hidden under layers of damage.
Nia leaned closer.
“What does it say?””
Evelyn whispered.
“Find the person who was supposed to protect us.””
Marcus frowned.
“Who?””
Evelyn looked at him.
And for the first time, Nia saw fear in Evelyn’s eyes.
“Your father.””
Marcus froze.
“My father?””
The room went silent.
May you like
Because everyone knew one thing.
Marcus’s father had been dead for twenty years.
