Chapter 13: The Father’s Shadow

For several seconds, Damon forgot how to breathe.

The photograph remained in his hand.

A younger Vanessa.

Ava’s mother.

And standing beside them…

His father.

A man Damon had spent years trying to understand.

A man who had built an empire, taught him discipline, and disappeared from his life when Damon needed him most.

Damon looked at Vanessa.

“You’re lying.””

His voice was quiet.

Not angry.

Not yet.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I wish I was.””

“My father died eight years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then how is he connected to this?””

Vanessa looked toward the closed archive room door.

“Because the man you buried was not the man you thought he was.””

Damon’s grip tightened around the photograph.

“You’re telling me my father was involved?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Because accepting it meant accepting that everything he built his life around was wrong.

His father had taught him one thing above all else:

Family protects family.

But now Damon was discovering family could also be the person who hurt you most.

Vanessa sat down again.

“I didn’t understand at first.””

Damon stared.

“Start from the beginning.””

She looked at him.

“Seven years ago, your father’s company was collapsing.””

Damon frowned.

“My father’s company was never collapsing.””

“That’s what he wanted everyone to believe.””

The room felt smaller.

Vanessa continued.

“He had debts. Hidden ones.””

Damon remembered.

The strange meetings.

The sudden arguments.

The way his father became distant before his death.

“But what does Ava have to do with that?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Your father believed you were going to expose him.””

Damon went still.

“Why would he think that?””

“Because you found the financial records.””

Damon remembered.

He had been investigating missing money from the family business.

He thought it was an accounting mistake.

He never imagined something darker.

“I confronted him.””

Vanessa nodded.

“You did.””

Damon stared.

“How do you know that?””

“Because I was there.””

The answer stunned him.

“You were there?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with regret.

“I followed him.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew something was wrong.””

She looked at the photograph.

“That night changed everything.””

Damon stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then:

“Your father found out Ava existed.””

The words hit him.

Damon shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“He knew.””

“Why would he care?””

“Because Ava wasn’t just your daughter.””

Damon’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“She was proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That your father had been hiding something from you.””

Damon felt a chill.

“What?””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Your father had a second family.””

Silence.

The kind that hurt.

Damon stared.

“No.””

“I saw the records.””

“No.””

“He had another life.””

Damon stepped back.

His entire childhood rearranged itself in seconds.

The man he admired.

The man he tried to impress.

The man whose approval he spent years chasing.

A stranger.

Vanessa continued.

“Your father found out Ava’s mother had documents proving it.””

“What documents?””

“Records. Payments. Names.””

Damon looked at the pendant.

“The silver sun.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your father used that symbol as a code.””

Damon’s stomach tightened.

“So Ava’s mother knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

“I found out too late.””

Damon looked at her.

“Then why did you hide Ava?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because after your father died, the people connected to him came looking.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know all their names.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I know one.””

Damon waited.

Vanessa whispered:

“Jonathan Vale.””

The name landed.

Damon immediately understood.

The fake document.

The threats.

The evidence.

All connected.

“He worked for my father?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He still does.””

Damon froze.

“My father is dead.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“His empire isn’t.””

The words were terrifying.

Because Damon had spent years believing he had inherited a business.

Now he wondered if he had inherited a war.

Outside the archive room, Ava called softly.

“Dad?””

Damon turned.

The word still felt new.

But it also felt natural.

He opened the door.

Ava stood there.

Her mother behind her.

“Are you okay?””

Damon looked at his daughter.

Then at the people who had been protecting secrets around her.

“I’m okay.””

But he wasn’t.

Not really.

Because he finally understood.

Ava wasn’t hidden because she was unwanted.

She was hidden because she was dangerous.

Not because of who she was.

Because of what she knew.

Then Damon’s phone buzzed.

A message.

From Jonathan.

One photo.

A photo of Ava leaving the ballroom.

Taken minutes earlier.

Under it:

*You found the past. Now protect her from the future.*

Damon’s face hardened.

Vanessa saw the message.

And whispered:

“He knows where she is.””

Damon looked at her.

“How?””

May you like

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Because someone inside this building is helping him.””
