Chapter 5: The Letter She Left Behind

Damon read the sentence again.

And again.

As if the words might rearrange themselves into something less impossible.

They didn’t.

The ballroom continued around him.

People laughed nervously.

Servers carried trays of champagne.

Cameras flashed.

But Damon felt like he was standing in a completely different world.

Ava looked up at him.

“Is my mom mad?””

The question pulled him back.

Damon quickly folded the paper.

“No.””

“Then why do you look sad?””

He looked at her.

Because a seven-year-old child had noticed his pain faster than any adult ever had.

Damon crouched beside her.

“Sometimes people leave important things behind because they’re trying to protect someone.””

Ava held her cake plate.

“Like my necklace?””

Damon looked at the silver sun.

“Yes.””

Marcus watched silently.

Vanessa watched too.

But Vanessa looked like she was waiting for a disaster.

Damon stood.

“Marcus. How long have you known about Ava?””

Marcus looked down.

“Since before she was born.””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“Stop.””

Damon turned.

“No.””

“Damon, you don’t understand.””

“I understand that everyone in this room knows something except me.””

His voice rose.

“About my own life.””

Several guests became uncomfortable.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“This isn’t about you.””

Damon stared at her.

“Then why is my name in the first sentence of the letter?””

That shut her down.

Marcus looked at Damon.

“You deserve the truth.””

“Then tell me.””

Marcus took a breath.

“Your relationship with Ava’s mother was never what Vanessa told you.””

Damon went still.

The sentence opened a door he had spent years keeping locked.

Years ago.

Before the company.

Before the money.

Before the perfect public image.

There had been a woman who believed in him before anyone else did.

A woman who knew him before he became Damon Cross, billionaire businessman.

A woman whose name he had stopped saying because it hurt too much.

But Vanessa had told him she was gone.

That she had chosen to disappear.

That she wanted nothing to do with him.

And Damon had believed her.

Because Vanessa was family.

Because Vanessa had always been there.

Because the truth had been too painful to question.

“What are you saying?”” Damon asked.

Marcus looked directly at him.

“I’m saying Ava’s mother never abandoned you.””

The words hit like a physical blow.

Ava looked confused.

“Abandoned?””

Damon immediately looked down.

He hadn’t meant for her to hear.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Someone made sure you believed she did.””

Damon slowly turned toward Vanessa.

She didn’t deny it.

That was the worst part.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“You have no idea what I did to protect this family.””

“Protect?””

Damon laughed once.

A cold, broken sound.

“You protected me by letting me believe someone I loved walked away?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I protected your future.””

“No.””

Damon shook his head.

“You protected your version of the story.””

The room was silent.

Even the guests who didn’t understand the details understood one thing.

A betrayal had been exposed.

Ava gently touched Damon’s hand.

“Are you angry?””

Damon looked at her.

Then at the pendant.

Then at the letter.

“I don’t know what I am.””

That honesty seemed to surprise everyone.

Marcus stepped closer.

“There’s more.””

Damon looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus hesitated.

“The necklace wasn’t just a gift.””

Damon waited.

“It was proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

Her face changed.

Because she knew.

And Damon saw it.

“What?”” he demanded.

Marcus spoke quietly.

“Proof that Ava belongs to you.””

The room went completely still.

Ava blinked.

Damon felt the world shift beneath him.

“No.””

It came out as a whisper.

Marcus didn’t look away.

“Your daughter has been alive for seven years.””

Damon stared.

His eyes moved slowly toward Ava.

The little girl holding the cake.

The little girl who had been standing alone.

The little girl wearing a symbol he thought he would never see again.

His daughter.

The word didn’t feel real.

Not yet.

Ava noticed his expression.

“Mr. Cross?””

Damon couldn’t speak.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You should have told him.””

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“You think this makes you innocent?””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I know exactly what I did.””

Damon finally found his voice.

“Where is her mother?””

Marcus looked away.

And that answer was worse than anything.

Because Damon already knew.

Something had happened.

Something Vanessa had hidden.

Something that had kept Ava away from him for seven years.

Then Marcus reached into his pocket again.

This time, he pulled out a photograph.

He handed it to Damon.

Damon looked down.

And his fingers began to shake.

Because the picture showed Ava’s mother.

Holding baby Ava.

Standing beside someone Damon never expected to see.

May you like

Someone who had sworn she had disappeared forever.

Vanessa.
