Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Silver Sun

For thirty seconds, nobody moved.

The entire ballroom seemed frozen between confusion and fear.

Damon Cross stood beside Ava, one hand resting protectively near her shoulder. The little girl held the plate of cake against her chest, unaware that a tiny silver pendant had just changed the atmosphere of the most expensive room in the building.

Vanessa was the only person who looked like she understood what was happening.

And that terrified Damon.

“Vanessa,” he said.

His voice was controlled.

But everyone who knew him recognized the warning underneath.

She forced a laugh.

“Damon, I have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“That’s interesting.””

He looked at the pendant.

“Because I didn’t ask if you knew what I was talking about.””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

A few guests looked between them.

One woman whispered, “Are they fighting?””

Another answered, “I don’t think this is about the charity anymore.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Can we discuss this privately?””

Damon didn’t move.

“No.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Damon.””

“You embarrassed a child in front of everyone here.””

Vanessa glanced around.

The cameras were still pointed at them.

The photographers had stopped pretending not to listen.

Her expression changed instantly.

Not guilt.

Fear.

She leaned closer and lowered her voice.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Damon looked directly at her.

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Ava watched the adults silently.

She looked uncomfortable.

Damon noticed.

He immediately softened his expression.

“Hey,” he said, kneeling again.

“Are you okay?””

Ava nodded.

But she wasn’t convincing.

“People usually get mad when they see this.””

Damon frowned.

“See what?””

She touched the pendant.

“This.””

His chest tightened.

“Who gets mad?””

Ava looked down.

“I don’t know their names.””

Damon waited.

“Just people who ask questions.””

“What questions?””

The girl hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“They ask where my mom is.””

Damon felt a chill.

Before he could respond, Vanessa interrupted.

“That’s enough.””

The room went quiet again.

Damon slowly turned.

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“It isn’t.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You need to stop before you destroy something you don’t understand.””

Damon stared at her.

“You’re talking about a child.””

“No,” Vanessa replied.

The answer came too quickly.

Too naturally.

And Damon noticed.

She caught herself and looked away.

Ava looked between them.

“Did I do something wrong?””

Damon immediately shook his head.

“No.””

He placed a hand over his heart.

“You did nothing wrong.””

The girl looked relieved for half a second.

Then she asked:

“Why does she hate me?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone in the room was thinking the same thing.

Why?

Why would a wealthy woman at a charity gala react like that to a hungry child?

Why would a necklace make her panic?

Why did Damon Cross look like he had just discovered something impossible?

Damon stood.

“Where is your mother, Ava?””

The girl became quiet.

“My mom said I should wait.””

“Wait for who?””

Ava looked toward the entrance.

“She said someone would know.””

Damon followed her gaze.

The entrance doors were closed.

Nobody was there.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

Damon looked down.

Unknown number.

One message.

His face changed as he read it.

*Leave the girl alone. You don’t know what you’re bringing back.*

Damon looked up immediately.

He scanned the room.

Hundreds of guests.

Dozens of possible witnesses.

But someone was watching.

Someone close enough to know what was happening.

Vanessa noticed his expression.

“What is it?””

Damon locked his phone.

“Nothing.””

But his voice told her he was lying.

Ava tugged gently on his sleeve.

“Mr. Cross?””

“Yes?””

“Are you going to make me leave?””

Damon looked at the little girl standing barefoot on the marble floor.

The same floor where people had walked past her all night.

He shook his head.

“No.””

Ava looked surprised.

“Why?””

Damon looked at the pendant.

Because he had spent years believing he would never see that symbol again.

Because someone had hidden the truth from him.

Because Vanessa’s fear meant this wasn’t a coincidence.

But he couldn’t tell a seven-year-old girl any of that.

So he simply said:

“Because nobody gets thrown away while I’m standing here.””

For the first time that evening, Ava smiled.

A small smile.

The kind children give when they finally feel safe.

Then Vanessa’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

And the color drained from her face.

Damon noticed.

“Who is it?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She stared at the name.

Then slowly looked at Ava.

And whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Damon stepped closer.

“What’s impossible?””

Vanessa looked up at him.

Her voice barely audible.

“The person calling…”

May you like

The call continued ringing.

And then Vanessa said the name that made Damon’s blood run cold.
