Chapter 3: The Name Vanessa Feared

Vanessa didn’t answer the phone.

She just stared at it.

The ringing echoed through the quiet ballroom like an alarm nobody else could hear.

Damon watched every change in her face.

The fear.

The disbelief.

The panic she was trying desperately to hide.

“Vanessa,” Damon said.

“Who is calling?””

She quickly locked the screen.

“Nobody.””

Damon almost laughed.

“Nobody doesn’t make you look like that.””

Several guests were still watching them.

Vanessa noticed and forced a smile.

“This event has become uncomfortable. Perhaps we should handle personal matters somewhere else.””

Damon looked at Ava.

The little girl was still holding the cake plate.

Still confused.

Still standing between adults who knew more than they were saying.

“No,” Damon said.

Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.

“No?””

“I’m not leaving her alone.””

“That child is not your responsibility.””

Damon looked at her.

“Then why are you afraid of her?””

Vanessa froze.

The question landed harder than an accusation.

Because it was the truth.

She wasn’t angry anymore.

She wasn’t annoyed.

She was afraid.

Ava noticed.

“She’s scared of me?””

Damon turned immediately.

“No, Ava.””

He lowered his voice.

“Adults get scared when they’re hiding things.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””

Damon stepped forward.

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

Again.

Vanessa looked away.

That was answer enough.

Damon had known Vanessa for almost fifteen years. He knew every expression she used when she wanted something. He knew the polished smile she wore for investors. He knew the fake concern she showed during interviews.

But he had never seen this.

Not once.

Not until tonight.

Ava quietly finished her cake.

Then she looked up.

“Can I ask something?””

Damon nodded.

“Anything.””

She touched the pendant.

“Do you know my mom?””

The question cut through him.

Damon didn’t respond immediately.

Because the honest answer was complicated.

He didn’t know.

Not anymore.

But the necklace suggested something he wasn’t ready to accept.

“I don’t know,” he finally said.

Ava looked down.

“My mom said a man would understand.””

Damon’s heartbeat changed.

“A man?””

She nodded.

“She said if I ever got lost, I should find someone who knows the sun.””

Damon stared at the pendant.

The silver sun.

A symbol from a part of his life he had buried.

A part connected to promises.

Mistakes.

And someone he thought was gone forever.

Before he could ask more, a photographer approached carefully.

“Mr. Cross?””

Damon turned.

The photographer held up his camera.

“I’m sorry, but I think you should see this.””

He showed Damon the screen.

The photo had been taken moments earlier.

Ava standing beside Damon.

The pendant clearly visible.

But in the background, near the edge of the ballroom, someone else appeared.

A person partially hidden behind guests.

Watching.

Damon looked closer.

“Who took this?””

The photographer shook his head.

“I don’t know. I thought you should see it before anyone else did.””

Damon handed the camera back.

“Delete it.””

The photographer hesitated.

“Mr. Cross—”

“Now.””

The photographer immediately nodded.

Damon turned back.

Vanessa was gone.

His eyes moved across the ballroom.

“She left.””

Ava looked around.

“Who?””

Damon didn’t answer.

Because he knew exactly who.

Vanessa Cross had disappeared the moment the questions became dangerous.

Damon took Ava’s hand.

“Stay close to me.””

She nodded.

They moved away from the crowd toward the side of the ballroom.

The charity banners still hung behind them.

The words looked different now.

FEEDING CHILDREN. PROTECTING FUTURES. CHANGING LIVES.

Damon stared at them.

A strange feeling settled in his chest.

For years, he had donated money to help children he never met.

Tonight, one child had walked directly into his life.

And brought back a secret someone had spent years hiding.

His phone buzzed again.

Another unknown message.

This time, only one sentence.

*Ask Vanessa why she buried the truth.*

Damon stared at the screen.

Then slowly looked toward the exit.

Vanessa wasn’t there.

But someone else was.

Standing in the doorway.

Watching Ava.

Watching him.

Damon moved in front of the girl.

“Who are you?””

The person stepped forward.

And before Damon could see their face clearly, they spoke four words that made him forget how to breathe.

“I know her mother.””

Damon froze.

May you like

Because he wasn’t ready for the next question.

And the stranger was already reaching into their pocket for something that would change everything.
