Chapter 6: The Woman Who Held the Secret
Damon couldn’t move.
The photograph trembled between his fingers.
Ava’s mother stood there, smiling softly while holding a newborn baby.
A tiny silver sun pendant rested against the baby’s blanket.
And beside them stood Vanessa.
Younger.
Different.
But unmistakably the same woman.
The woman who had spent years telling Damon she knew nothing.
The woman who had just tried to stop him from learning the truth.
Damon slowly looked up.
“Explain.””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Explain.””
This time his voice broke.
The entire ballroom watched.
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward Ava.
For one brief moment, something almost like guilt appeared.
Then it disappeared.
“I did what I had to do.””
Damon stared at her.
“That is not an explanation.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“You think this is simple because you found a picture?””
“No.””
Damon stepped closer.
“I think it’s simple because you lied.””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus sighed.
“Vanessa, stop making excuses.””
She turned sharply.
“You don’t know what I sacrificed.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Neither did she.””
The words landed.
Damon noticed.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
He looked at Marcus.
“Who did Vanessa sacrifice?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Not here.””
Damon almost smiled.
The same words again.
Always not here.
Always later.
Always another secret.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t get to do that anymore.””
He pointed toward the ballroom.
“Not after tonight.””
Ava stood quietly beside him.
She looked smaller than before.
Damon noticed immediately.
He lowered himself.
“Hey.””
She looked up.
“Are you leaving me?””
The question stopped him.
“No.””
“But everyone leaves.””
Those three words hurt more than anything else.
Damon looked at the little girl who had walked into his life carrying a secret nobody wanted him to know.
He gently placed his hand over hers.
“I’m not everyone.””
Ava stared at him.
“Promise?””
Damon swallowed.
He had made promises before.
Some he kept.
Some were stolen from him.
But this one mattered.
“I promise.””
For the first time that night, Ava relaxed.
She leaned slightly closer.
Damon stood again.
His eyes returned to Vanessa.
“We’re leaving.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
“You can’t just take her.””
Damon’s expression changed.
“She is not something to take.””
The words were calm.
But final.
“She is a child.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You don’t even know her.””
Damon looked at Ava.
Then back at Vanessa.
“You’re right.””
A pause.
“I don’t know seven years of her life.””
His voice became quieter.
“And that is exactly what I’m going to fix.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“You have no idea what you’re walking into.””
Damon stopped.
“I think I finally do.””
He turned toward Marcus.
“You’re coming with us.””
Marcus nodded.
“I expected that.””
As they began walking, Ava looked back at the ballroom.
At the cake table.
At the people who had watched her get humiliated.
Then she looked at Damon.
“Can I take the cake?””
Damon looked down.
A small smile appeared.
“Yes.””
She hugged the plate carefully.
“Why?””
“Because,” Damon said, “you wanted it.””
Ava smiled.
And for a moment, the chaos disappeared.
But as Damon reached the ballroom doors, his phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
One line.
*If you want the truth about Ava’s mother, ask Vanessa what happened the night she disappeared.*
Damon stopped.
Marcus saw the message.
And his face changed.
“You got that too?””
Damon looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He looked toward Vanessa.
Because she was no longer standing near the staircase.
She was gone.
Again.
But this time, she had left something behind.
On the floor near where she had been standing was a small envelope.
With Damon’s name written across the front.
May you like
And beneath it, one sentence:
*You were never supposed to find her.*
