Chapter 3: The Daughter Who Hated His Name

The first thing Marcus noticed was the silence.

Not the kind of silence that came from peace.

The kind that came before violence.

The three black vehicles sat across the road, blocking the SUV completely. Their engines were still running. Their windows were tinted. Their doors remained closed.

Waiting.

Marcus watched them through the windshield.

Twelve years ago, he would have already known exactly how many people were inside.

How many exits existed.

How many seconds it would take to neutralize a threat.

But he was not that man anymore.

At least, that was what he had told himself.

Elena reached beneath her jacket and pulled out a small device.

Marcus looked at it.

“Still carrying weapons?””

She glanced at him.

“Still pretending you don’t know how dangerous the world is?””

Marcus looked back toward the vehicles.

“I know exactly how dangerous it is.””

“Then you know why we came prepared.””

The driver tightened his hands around the steering wheel.

“Marcus.””

Marcus turned.

The driver looked older than him, maybe in his seventies, with a calm face and tired eyes.

“You’re the reason they found us.””

Marcus did not react.

“Explain.””

The driver looked at the road ahead.

“The moment you fought those men outside the store, cameras captured you.””

Elena nodded.

“They weren’t random attackers.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“The grocery store.””

“Yes.””

“The entire thing was staged.””

“Yes.””

A cold feeling settled inside Marcus.

Not fear.

Recognition.

The Black Lotus had never been interested in random destruction.

They were patient.

They waited.

They studied.

They moved only when they knew exactly what would happen.

Marcus looked at the three vehicles blocking them.

“They expected me to fight.””

Elena nodded.

“They expected you to reveal yourself.””

“And when I did?””

“They sent the message.””

Marcus remembered the text.

Daniel’s name.

The impossible message.

She knows the truth.

His jaw tightened.

Daniel.

His student.

His brother.

The person he thought he lost.

Marcus opened the door.

Elena immediately grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

Marcus looked down at her hand.

She released him.

Slowly.

“Sorry.””

Marcus stepped out of the SUV.

“Don’t apologize.””

The California sun hit his face.

The street was almost empty now.

The people who had been watching from a distance had disappeared.

Everyone knew when something dangerous was about to happen.

Marcus walked forward.

The three vehicles remained still.

Then the middle SUV door opened.

A man stepped out.

He was in his fifties.

Black suit.

Clean appearance.

No visible weapons.

That was usually the sign of someone who did not need one.

He looked at Marcus.

And smiled.

“After all these years.””

Marcus stopped.

The man tilted his head.

“I wondered if you were still alive.””

Marcus said nothing.

The man laughed quietly.

“Still the same.””

Elena stepped out behind Marcus.

The man’s smile disappeared.

“Interesting.””

He looked at her.

“Daniel’s student.””

Elena’s expression hardened.

“You know my name.””

“I know everyone’s name.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Who are you?””

The man looked almost offended.

“Marcus Vale.””

He smiled again.

“You really did erase yourself.””

A pause.

Then:

“Name’s Adrian Cross.””

Marcus’s eyes changed.

Not because he knew him.

Because he recognized the name.

Adrian Cross.

One of the Black Lotus’s youngest leaders.

A man who had built his reputation not through strength, but through strategy.

A man who convinced others to fight for him.

“You’re supposed to be dead,” Marcus said.

Adrian smiled.

“So are you.””

The two men stood facing each other.

Two ghosts from different parts of the same war.

Adrian looked toward the SUV.

“Your daughter has your stubbornness.””

Marcus’s expression changed instantly.

“Where is she?””

Adrian ignored the question.

“She spent years believing you abandoned her.””

Marcus stepped forward.

Elena moved.

“Marcus.””

He stopped.

Adrian noticed.

“You still care.””

Marcus looked at him.

“About my daughter?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

Adrian smiled slightly.

“That’s the problem.””

The street became colder.

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“What did you do to her?””

“Nothing.””

“Then why are you here?””

Adrian looked at the ground.

For the first time, his expression became serious.

“Because someone else is.””

Marcus studied him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the Black Lotus is no longer the biggest threat.””

Elena looked confused.

“You’re lying.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You always were Daniel’s favorite student.””

“Because he knew I could see through people like you.””

Adrian smiled.

“Then you should know I’m telling the truth.””

Marcus watched him carefully.

A lie had a rhythm.

A hesitation.

A movement of the eyes.

Adrian had none.

That bothered him.

Because Marcus could tell when someone was pretending.

And Adrian Cross was not pretending.

“You came here to warn me?””

Adrian looked toward him.

“No.””

“Then why?””

“Because Maya is already in danger.””

Marcus’s body went still.

“Where is she?””

Adrian reached into his jacket.

Elena immediately raised her weapon.

Marcus lifted one hand.

Stop.

Adrian slowly removed a photograph.

He held it out.

Marcus took it.

The image showed Maya.

Standing outside a martial arts school.

But this picture was different.

She was not alone.

A man stood several feet behind her.

Watching.

Marcus looked closer.

His breathing changed.

Because he knew that face.

Not from memory.

From history.

“No.””

Elena stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Marcus handed her the photograph.

Her expression changed.

“Impossible.””

Adrian nodded.

“That’s what everyone thought.””

Marcus stared at the picture.

The man behind Maya.

The man he buried twelve years ago.

The man who started everything.

“Your enemy isn’t coming for Maya,” Adrian said.

Marcus looked up.

“Then what?””

Adrian’s eyes became serious.

“They’re coming because Maya found something.””

“What?””

Adrian took a step closer.

“The reason your family was targeted.””

Marcus waited.

But Adrian did not answer.

Instead, he looked toward the buildings around them.

Too quickly.

Marcus noticed.

“What are you doing?””

Adrian’s face changed.

“Leaving.””

The sound came a second later.

A sharp crack.

The rear window of the SUV shattered.

Elena pulled Marcus down instantly.

Another shot hit the pavement.

The street exploded into movement.

The three vehicles blocking the road suddenly opened.

Men stepped out.

Not thugs.

Not amateurs.

Trained fighters.

Marcus rolled behind the SUV.

His old instincts returned before he could stop them.

Elena fired back.

The driver started the engine.

Adrian disappeared behind one of the vehicles.

Marcus looked around.

Counted.

Five attackers.

Two positions on the left.

Three on the right.

Sniper above.

He hated that his mind still worked this way.

Because it reminded him of who he was.

A weapon.

A man who spent years trying to become human.

Then a voice came through one of the attackers’ phones.

A woman’s voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

Marcus froze.

Everyone froze.

Because he knew that voice.

He had heard it every morning when she was a child.

He had heard it laugh.

Cry.

Call his name.

The phone speaker crackled.

“Father.””

Marcus’s heart stopped.

The attacker holding the phone looked toward him.

The voice continued.

“You wanted the truth.””

Marcus slowly stood.

“Maya?””

Silence.

Then:

“I spent twelve years believing you left me.””

Marcus could not speak.

The voice became colder.

“Now I know you didn’t.””

A pause.

“But I also know why you did.””

Marcus looked around.

Nobody moved.

Not Elena.

Not Adrian.

Not the attackers.

Everyone was listening.

Maya’s voice dropped.

“And I know what you did to my mother.””

The world seemed to disappear.

Marcus stared at the phone.

His face changed.

Not from fear.

From pain.

Because there was one truth he had never told anyone.

One secret he buried deeper than his own past.

“Maya…”

Her voice cut him off.

“Come to the old Vale training hall.””

A pause.

“Come alone.””

Marcus looked at Elena.

She shook her head immediately.

“No.””

Maya continued.

“Because if you bring anyone…”

Another pause.

“…I’ll show the world what my father really is.””

The call ended.

The street went silent.

Marcus stared at the dead phone.

Elena lowered her weapon.

“Marcus…”

He did not answer.

Because for the first time in twelve years…

The greatest threat in his life was not an enemy.

May you like

It was the daughter he had lost.

And somewhere in the city, Maya Vale was waiting for him to explain the one thing he had spent his entire life trying to hide.
