Chapter 5: The Recording That Changed Everything

The video stopped.

But nobody moved.

The old training hall remained frozen in darkness, illuminated only by the faint glow of the projector screen.

Maya stared at the image of her mother.

A woman she had spent twelve years grieving.

A woman she believed was gone forever.

A woman who had just appeared in front of her like a ghost from another life.

Marcus stood several feet away.

Silent.

Still.

Like the entire world had stopped around him.

Maya slowly turned her head.

“What did she mean?””

Marcus did not answer.

Her voice became sharper.

“What did she mean, Marcus?””

The way she said his name hurt more than if she had screamed.

Because it meant she was no longer seeing him as her father.

She was seeing him as someone who had lied.

Someone who had hidden something.

Marcus looked at the blank screen.

“I don’t know.””

Maya laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I don’t know who activated the recording.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Marcus looked at her.

Maya stepped closer.

“What did she mean when she said you failed to keep me away from the truth?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence answered her.

Maya’s eyes changed.

The anger returned.

“You knew.””

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

But Maya heard it.

Her face lost color.

“You knew about this?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

Marcus said nothing.

“How long?””

“Twelve years.””

The room went quiet.

Maya stared at him.

Twelve years.

The number carried everything.

Twelve years of birthdays.

Twelve years of holidays.

Twelve years of wondering why her father disappeared.

And he had been carrying answers the entire time.

“You watched me suffer.””

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“I tried to protect you.””

“No.””

Maya shook her head.

“You hid from me.””

Marcus did not argue.

Because again, she was right.

Maya walked away, running her fingers through her hair.

“I don’t understand you.””

Marcus remained still.

“You lost my mother.””

His expression tightened.

“You lost me.””

A pause.

“And somehow you convinced yourself silence was love.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Maya…”

“Don’t.””

She wiped her eyes quickly.

“I don’t want an explanation that makes you feel better.””

Marcus swallowed.

“I never wanted you to hate me.””

Maya looked back.

“Then why did you give me a reason?””

The words struck harder than any attack.

Marcus looked toward the projector.

The woman’s frozen face stared back at him.

His wife.

Maya’s mother.

The person who knew him better than anyone.

The person who knew the truth about what he had become.

A sound came from outside.

A branch breaking.

Marcus immediately turned.

His body changed.

Maya noticed.

“You hear something?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Marcus moved toward the window.

“Someone who wants us to know they’re here.””

He looked outside.

Nothing.

Too quiet.

That was the problem.

The Black Lotus never attacked with noise.

They attacked with patience.

Maya stepped beside him.

“Are they here for me?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Because of you?””

The question hurt.

But Marcus answered honestly.

“Yes.””

Maya nodded slowly.

At least he was finally telling the truth.

A small device suddenly fell through the broken window.

It hit the floor.

Marcus reacted instantly.

He grabbed Maya and moved.

The device exploded with a flash.

Not fire.

Not destruction.

A burst of white smoke filled the room.

Maya coughed.

Marcus pulled her behind an old wooden pillar.

“Stay down.””

She looked at him.

“You still give orders.””

“Because you’re still in danger.””

“And you still think you’re the only one who can handle it.””

Marcus ignored the comment.

He watched the smoke.

A shadow moved.

One person.

Then another.

Then another.

Three figures entered through the side entrance.

Black clothing.

Silent movement.

Professional.

Marcus recognized them immediately.

Not Black Lotus.

Different.

The first attacker moved toward him.

Marcus stepped forward.

The fight was fast.

Controlled.

The attacker threw a strike.

Marcus blocked.

Countered.

One movement.

One breath.

The attacker fell.

The second came immediately.

Younger.

Faster.

Marcus avoided the first attack by inches.

But something was different.

These fighters were not trying to defeat him.

They were testing him.

Studying him.

Marcus realized too late.

“They’re recording,” Maya said.

Marcus looked toward the ceiling.

A small camera was attached near the old training lights.

Someone was watching.

The third attacker stepped forward.

“Confirming identity.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

The attacker tilted his head.

“Marcus Vale.””

The voice sounded emotionless.

“Confirmed.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“Who sent you?””

The attacker did not answer.

Instead, he looked toward Maya.

“Target confirmed.””

Marcus moved instantly.

Nobody touched his daughter.

Nobody.

But before he reached them, the attacker pressed something on his wrist.

A door behind them opened.

A vehicle engine started outside.

They were leaving.

Marcus followed.

He reached the doorway just as the black car disappeared down the street.

Maya came beside him.

“They knew.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“They knew exactly where I was.””

“Yes.””

She looked at him.

“Because they were following you.””

Marcus said nothing.

Maya looked away.

For the first time, she understood.

Her father had not been hiding because he wanted to abandon her.

He had been hiding because something was chasing him.

But that did not erase the pain.

It only made it more complicated.

The sound of footsteps interrupted them.

Marcus turned.

Elena entered the training hall.

She looked around.

Then at Marcus.

“You showed her.””

Maya looked at her.

“You knew?””

Elena stopped.

A mistake.

A small one.

But enough.

Maya’s face changed.

“Everyone knew.””

“No—”

“Everyone knew except me.””

Elena looked down.

Maya laughed quietly.

“That’s almost impressive.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Maya.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“No more secrets.””

Marcus nodded.

“Agreed.””

Elena hesitated.

“There’s something else.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

She held up a phone.

“The recording wasn’t sent by your enemies.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then who?””

Elena looked at Maya.

“Maya’s mother.””

The room became silent again.

“She scheduled it twelve years ago,” Elena continued.

Marcus stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“She knew the attack was coming.””

Maya looked confused.

“Then why didn’t she stop it?””

Elena looked at Marcus.

Because the answer was not simple.

Marcus understood immediately.

“She couldn’t.””

Maya looked at him.

“Why?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Because this was the truth he had avoided.

The truth he had protected everyone from.

“Because your mother was working with them.””

Maya froze.

“What?””

Marcus looked at her.

“She infiltrated the Black Lotus.””

Elena nodded.

“She spent years gathering information.””

Maya looked between them.

“So she was a spy?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she die?””

Marcus’s voice became quiet.

“Because they found out.””

Maya stared.

Marcus continued.

“Your mother discovered who was leading them.””

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the old screen.

Toward the face of the woman he loved.

“The person who ordered the attack on our family.””

Maya waited.

Marcus took a breath.

And finally said the name.

“Your grandfather.””

The silence afterward felt endless.

Maya blinked.

“No.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“My grandfather died before I was born.””

“That’s what everyone was told.””

Maya stepped back.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

Elena looked at Marcus.

“Marcus…”

But he continued.

“Your grandfather created the Black Lotus.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

“He was the first Master.””

The word hung in the air.

The same title people once used for Marcus.

Maya looked at him.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

Her eyes filled.

“From my own family?””

Marcus could not answer.

Then the projector suddenly turned back on.

Everyone turned.

A new video appeared.

Not Maya’s mother.

Someone else.

An older man.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

Marcus froze.

Because he knew that face.

The man smiled at the camera.

“Hello, Marcus.””

Marcus stepped closer.

The voice continued.

“I know you’re watching.””

Maya looked at her father.

The old man on the screen smiled.

“And I know my granddaughter is standing beside you.””

Marcus’s hands tightened.

The man leaned forward.

“Bring Maya to me.””

A pause.

“Or I will show her the second truth.””

Marcus stared.

The man’s final words echoed through the empty hall.

“The truth about who her father really killed.””

The screen went black.

Maya looked at Marcus.

May you like

And for the first time…

She was afraid of the answer.
