Chapter 8: The Master Behind the Lies

The voice echoed through the old training hall.

For a moment, nobody breathed.

Marcus knew that voice.

He had spent years trying to forget it.

The slow confidence.

The calm control.

The certainty of a man who believed the entire world existed beneath him.

Kenji Arata.

His teacher.

His mentor.

The man who built Marcus Vale into a warrior.

And the man who nearly destroyed everything Marcus loved.

Maya looked around the dark room.

“Who is that?””

Marcus did not answer.

Because saying the name out loud would make it real.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You came.””

A small laugh came from the darkness.

“Of course I came.””

The lights flickered.

Then one by one, they turned on.

An older man stood at the far end of the room.

Gray hair.

Straight posture.

Calm eyes.

He looked nothing like the monster Marcus remembered.

That was what made him dangerous.

Monsters were easy to recognize.

Kenji Arata looked like a grandfather.

A teacher.

A man people would trust.

He looked at Marcus.

“My greatest student.””

Marcus stared back.

“You’re alive.””

Kenji smiled.

“You always were disappointed when people survived.””

Maya looked at Marcus.

“You know him.””

Marcus did not take his eyes off Kenji.

“He created everything.””

Kenji tilted his head.

“Everything?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“The Black Lotus.””

Kenji smiled.

“A child’s version of my vision.””

Daniel moved beside Maya.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Kenji looked at Daniel.

His expression changed slightly.

“Still protecting your father.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I’m protecting my family.””

Kenji looked amused.

“Family.””

He looked around the room.

“That word has caused more weakness than anything else.””

Marcus felt his hands tighten.

“You always believed love made people weak.””

Kenji nodded.

“And you proved me wrong.””

Marcus frowned.

“You?””

Kenji walked slowly forward.

“You were my greatest failure.””

The words surprised Maya.

Marcus remained still.

“You taught me discipline,” Marcus said.

“I did.””

“You taught me control.””

“Yes.””

“You taught me patience.””

Kenji smiled.

“And then you learned compassion.””

A pause.

“That was where you failed.””

Maya looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus finally answered.

“He wanted me to become him.””

Kenji nodded.

“Not exactly.””

He looked at Maya.

“I wanted him to become something greater.””

Maya’s expression hardened.

“By destroying everyone around him?””

Kenji smiled.

“You have your father’s courage.””

She stepped forward.

“And his mistakes?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Maya.””

“No.””

She faced Kenji.

“You knew about us.””

Kenji looked at her.

“I knew everything.””

The words were cold.

Maya’s face changed.

“You watched us?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Kenji looked at Marcus.

“Because I needed to know if my student could truly abandon his past.””

Marcus stared.

“You were testing me.””

“Yes.””

“By attacking my family?””

Kenji’s expression did not change.

“You misunderstand.””

His voice remained calm.

“I did not attack your family.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Then who did?””

Kenji smiled.

“Ask your son.””

Everyone looked at Daniel.

Marcus turned.

Daniel’s face had changed.

Not fear.

Pain.

Marcus noticed.

“What is he talking about?””

Daniel looked down.

“Marcus…”

The use of his name hurt.

Because Daniel had always called him something else.

Something respectful.

Something closer.

“Tell me.””

Daniel remained silent.

Kenji answered for him.

“Your son knows the truth.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“What truth?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I was there.””

Silence.

Maya looked confused.

“There for what?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“The night everything happened.””

Marcus felt the room shift.

“You were a baby.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

A pause.

“I was nineteen.””

Nobody spoke.

Maya stepped back.

“What?””

Marcus stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You thought your wife gave birth to me after you left.””

His voice became heavier.

“But I was born before Maya.””

Marcus could not process it.

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“I was hidden.””

“Why?””

“Because my mother knew what I would become.””

Marcus stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“She knew I had been trained.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“By who?””

Daniel looked at Kenji.

The answer was obvious.

“No.””

Marcus stepped back.

“No.””

Kenji watched silently.

Daniel continued.

“I was your first student.””

Maya looked shocked.

“You were his student?””

Daniel nodded.

“Before you.””

Marcus felt something breaking inside him.

His entire life was built on truths he never knew.

“I don’t understand.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I was the one who followed the Black Lotus.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“I was the one who believed Grandpa.””

“No.””

“I was the one who thought you were weak.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“I thought you abandoned us.””

The room went silent.

“I thought you chose Maya over me.””

Marcus stared.

“Daniel…”

“I hated you.””

The words were quiet.

But honest.

“I spent years believing you were the reason my life was destroyed.””

Marcus looked down.

“And then?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Then I learned the truth.””

Kenji smiled.

“And what truth was that?””

Daniel looked at him.

“That you lied.””

Kenji’s smile faded.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Marcus noticed.

Daniel continued.

“You told me Marcus betrayed us.””

A pause.

“You told me he chose to leave.””

Another pause.

“But you were the one who caused everything.””

Kenji’s eyes became colder.

“You disappoint me.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“I learned from the best.””

Kenji laughed softly.

“Your father taught you compassion.””

He looked at Marcus.

“And compassion made him weak.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“No.””

Kenji looked at him.

“You still believe that?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Kenji smiled.

“After everything?””

Marcus looked at Maya.

Then Daniel.

Then back at him.

“Yes.””

Kenji’s expression hardened.

“Then you learned nothing.””

The room suddenly shook.

A hidden door opened behind Kenji.

Several armed fighters entered.

Maya immediately moved into a defensive stance.

Marcus noticed.

A small moment.

Pride.

His daughter had become a warrior.

Not because he forced her.

Because she chose.

Kenji looked at her.

“You trained her well.””

Marcus said nothing.

“She has your strength.””

A pause.

“But not your weakness.””

Maya looked at him.

“What weakness?””

Kenji answered.

“Love.””

Marcus moved.

Fast.

But Kenji was ready.

The two old warriors collided.

For the first time in decades, Marcus fought his teacher.

Every movement was familiar.

Every strike.

Every defense.

Because Kenji had taught him all of it.

Marcus blocked.

Countered.

Kenji smiled.

“You still remember.””

“I remember everything.””

Their fight moved across the old training hall.

Daniel and Maya fought against the attackers.

Brother and sister.

Two people who had never known each other.

Yet somehow moved together naturally.

Marcus saw it.

And something inside him changed.

They were not just surviving.

They were becoming a family.

Kenji noticed too.

And for the first time, his calm expression disappeared.

“You think this is victory?””

Marcus blocked another strike.

“What?””

Kenji stepped back.

“You still don’t understand.””

He pressed a button on a small device.

The old projector turned on.

A recording appeared.

Marcus froze.

Because it was his wife again.

But this time…

She was not alone.

She was standing beside someone.

Someone Marcus recognized.

Someone impossible.

His own reflection stared back from the screen.

A younger version of himself.

Maya looked confused.

“What is that?””

Marcus could not answer.

Because the recording showed something impossible.

His wife looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this…”

She took a breath.

“…then Marcus finally knows.””

The younger Marcus beside her spoke.

And the voice was his.

But the words were not.

“Kenji was never the real enemy.””

The recording continued.

“The real enemy was the person Marcus trusted most.””

Maya looked at her father.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Because the person in the recording looked exactly like him.

But he was not him.

Kenji smiled.

“You wanted the truth.””

A pause.

“Now you’ll finally see it.””

The recording revealed the impossible.

May you like

There had been another Marcus Vale.

And he was the one who destroyed their family.
