Chapter 7: The Son He Never Knew

Marcus Vale did not move.

Not because he was afraid.

Because the human mind had limits.

There were things a person could accept.

Things they could fight.

Things they could survive.

But there were some truths so impossible that the first instinct was not to believe them.

It was to reject them.

The woman across the street watched him carefully.

She knew exactly what she had done.

She had not attacked him.

She had not threatened him.

She had simply spoken a sentence that could break a man who had survived everything else.

Your son is alive.

Maya looked at Marcus.

Then at the woman.

Then back at Marcus.

“My brother?””

The question was barely a whisper.

Marcus looked at his daughter.

He had no answer.

And that terrified her more than anything.

“Dad?””

The word stopped him.

She had not called him that since she arrived at the training hall.

Not once.

Marcus slowly turned toward her.

“Maya…”

She stepped closer.

“Do I have a brother?””

Marcus’s silence became unbearable.

Elena looked between them.

She looked confused.

“You never told me.””

Marcus’s eyes remained fixed on the woman.

“Because I didn’t know.””

The woman smiled slightly.

“Finally.””

She stepped away from the car.

“An honest answer.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“Who are you?””

The woman continued walking closer.

“My name is Rachel Cross.””

Elena immediately raised her weapon.

Marcus noticed.

“Cross?””

Rachel stopped.

“Yes.””

Maya looked at Elena.

“Why does that matter?””

Elena’s face became serious.

“Adrian Cross’s sister.””

Marcus looked at Rachel.

The pieces started connecting.

Adrian.

The Black Lotus.

The hidden family.

The impossible secrets.

Everyone seemed to know something except him.

Rachel looked at Marcus.

“You spent twelve years hiding from the world.””

A pause.

“But the world never stopped watching you.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Where is my son?””

Rachel looked at him.

“You want that answer?””

“Yes.””

“Then come with me.””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Rachel smiled.

“Still cautious.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You don’t walk someone into a situation without knowing the rules.””

“Good.””

Rachel nodded.

“That’s exactly why he wants to meet you.””

“Who?””

She looked at him.

“Your son.””

The street fell silent.

Marcus felt something strange.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Something he had forgotten how to feel.

Hope.

And that frightened him more than anything.

Because hope could be taken away.

He had learned that lesson.

Maya stepped forward.

“I’m coming.””

Marcus looked at her.

“No.””

She immediately shook her head.

“Don’t.””

“Maya.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“You don’t get to find out you have a son and leave me behind again.””

Marcus stopped.

Because she was not talking about today.

She was talking about twelve years ago.

About every time he chose silence.

Maya looked at Rachel.

“If he exists, I deserve to know.””

Rachel studied her.

“You’re exactly like him.””

Maya frowned.

“Like who?””

“Your father.””

The answer surprised her.

Rachel looked back at Marcus.

“You both think protecting people means carrying everything alone.””

Marcus said nothing.

Because he knew it was true.

Rachel turned toward the car.

“You have thirty minutes before they move.””

Elena stepped forward.

“Who?””

Rachel looked at her.

“The people hunting all of you.””

“Black Lotus?””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

A pause.

“The people who created them.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“You said my son wants to meet me.””

Rachel nodded.

“He does.””

“Then why are they coming?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Because your son is the reason they’re afraid.””

The mountain road was quiet.

Too quiet.

Marcus sat in the back of the vehicle beside Maya.

Neither spoke.

The silence between them was different now.

Not empty.

Heavy.

Full of things neither knew how to say.

Maya stared out the window.

“Did you really not know?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Know what?””

“That he existed.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

She studied his face.

“You’re telling the truth.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked confused.

“Why what?””

“Why would you tell me?””

He looked away.

“Because I’m tired of lying.””

That answer surprised her.

Maya looked down.

For twelve years, she imagined this moment.

Imagined him explaining.

Imagined him apologizing.

Imagined herself feeling relief.

But reality was different.

The truth did not fix everything.

It only opened more doors.

“Who was he?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Your brother?””

She nodded.

Marcus was silent for a moment.

Then:

“His name was supposed to be Daniel.””

Maya froze.

“Daniel?””

Marcus nodded.

“After my student?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel was the first person who believed I could become something different.””

Maya looked out the window again.

“So my brother was named after the person who died.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“He didn’t die.””

She turned.

“What?””

Marcus looked ahead.

“Apparently.””

The vehicle continued through the mountains.

After several minutes, they reached an old stone structure hidden between trees.

The original training hall.

The place where Marcus learned.

The place where his entire life changed.

The moment he stepped inside, he felt it.

Someone was there.

Waiting.

The door opened.

A young man stood in the center of the room.

Marcus stopped.

He was around thirty years old.

Tall.

Strong.

A calm expression.

But the eyes.

Those eyes.

Marcus knew them.

Because they were his.

The young man looked at him.

Neither moved.

Neither spoke.

Then the young man said:

“You’re older than I expected.””

Marcus stared.

“You’re Daniel.””

The young man nodded.

“Yes.””

Maya stood beside Marcus.

The young man looked at her.

“My sister.””

The word felt strange.

Maya did not know what to do with it.

She had spent her entire life believing she was alone.

Now she was standing in front of someone who shared her blood.

Daniel looked back at Marcus.

“I wanted to hate you.””

Marcus said nothing.

“I tried.””

Daniel walked closer.

“But it’s difficult to hate someone when you spend your whole life wondering why they disappeared.””

Marcus swallowed.

“I didn’t know.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“That’s what everyone says.””

“No.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I truly didn’t know.””

Daniel stopped.

Something changed in his expression.

Because he believed him.

Not completely.

But enough.

“How?””

Marcus asked.

“How are you alive?””

Daniel looked down.

“My mother saved me.””

Marcus froze.

“Your mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew the attack was coming.””

Maya looked between them.

“Wait.””

She looked at Marcus.

“You said Mom only had one child.””

Marcus’s face changed.

Because he remembered.

The hospital.

The explosion.

The night everything burned.

Daniel continued:

“She wanted you to believe that.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Because if you knew I existed, they would have used me against you.””

Marcus stared.

“They?””

Daniel nodded.

“The Black Lotus.””

A pause.

“And Grandpa.””

The word hit harder than Marcus expected.

Daniel looked at him.

“You want to know the truth?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel walked toward an old wooden table.

On it sat a file.

A thick one.

Old.

Worn.

He placed it in front of Marcus.

“This is everything.””

Marcus opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Reports.

Documents.

And one picture.

A picture of Marcus.

His wife.

Maya as a child.

And a baby.

His baby.

Marcus’s hand shook slightly.

A feeling he had not allowed himself in decades.

Regret.

Maya saw the picture.

Her eyes filled.

“That’s him?””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s me.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus noticed something else.

A document beneath the photograph.

A name.

A signature.

And a date.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Maya looked at him.

“What is it?””

Marcus slowly lifted the paper.

His voice was quiet.

“The attack…”

Daniel watched him.

“What about it?””

Marcus stared at the signature.

Because he recognized it.

The person who authorized the destruction of his family.

The person who ordered the night that changed everything.

It was not his grandfather.

It was not the Black Lotus.

It was someone else.

Someone Marcus trusted.

Someone he had trained.

Someone he loved like a son.

Marcus whispered:

“No…”

Maya stepped closer.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at the name.

And finally said:

“Daniel.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked at the young man standing across from him.

The same name.

The same face.

But a different person.

“The person who ordered the attack was my student.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Because he knew.

He knew the truth Marcus had just discovered.

Then the lights in the training hall went out.

A voice came from the darkness.

“Congratulations, Marcus.””

Everyone turned.

The voice continued.

“You finally found the family you lost.””

A pause.

“But you still haven’t found the person who destroyed it.””

Marcus prepared himself.

Because he knew that voice.

A voice from the past.

A voice that should have been impossible.

The voice of the man who trained him.

Kenji Arata.

May you like

“Now,” the voice said.

“Let me show you what your wife really did before she died.””
