Chapter 9: The Man Who Wore His Face
The recording continued playing.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in the room was trying to understand something impossible.
The man on the screen looked like Marcus Vale.
Not similar.
Not close.
Exactly the same.
Same face.
Same voice.
Same eyes.
Same scar above his left eyebrow.
Maya stared at the screen.
Then slowly turned toward her father.
Marcus looked as confused as she was.
And that scared her.
Because for the first time, she saw something she had never seen before.
Marcus Vale did not know the answer.
The recording showed the younger version of him standing beside Maya’s mother.
Her face was tired.
Her eyes were full of fear.
But she was alive.
“You need to understand,” the woman said in the video.
“This was never about strength.””
The younger Marcus looked toward the camera.
“It was about control.””
Kenji stood at the edge of the room, watching.
Enjoying every second.
Marcus looked at him.
“What did you do?””
Kenji smiled.
“You finally ask the right question.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You created him.””
Kenji nodded.
“Not exactly.””
Maya looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Kenji turned toward her.
“Your father spent his life believing he was unique.””
A pause.
“He was not.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Explain.””
Kenji walked closer.
“The greatest warriors are not created through muscle.””
He tapped his temple.
“They are created through understanding.””
Marcus felt something cold move through him.
“You copied me.””
Kenji smiled.
“Copied?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
A pause.
“I improved you.””
The words made Marcus’s blood run cold.
Maya looked at him.
“Dad?””
Marcus did not answer.
Because suddenly old memories returned.
Things he ignored.
Things that never made sense.
Moments when people called him by another name.
Moments when enemies seemed to know his thoughts.
Moments when Kenji always seemed one step ahead.
“You created a replacement.””
Kenji nodded.
“A successor.””
Marcus stared.
“A weapon.””
Kenji’s smile disappeared.
“You always use that word like it is an insult.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Because that is what you made.””
Kenji looked at Maya.
“Your father had one weakness.””
Maya’s expression tightened.
“Love.””
Kenji nodded.
“He became attached.””
Marcus said nothing.
“Family made him hesitate.””
Kenji looked back.
“I needed someone without hesitation.””
The room went silent.
Daniel moved closer to Maya.
“This is what I tried to tell you.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew.””
Daniel nodded.
“I found out years ago.””
“How?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because I met him.””
Marcus froze.
“Who?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“The other Marcus.””
The words felt impossible.
“You saw him?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After the attack.””
Marcus stared.
Daniel continued.
“He was the one who took me.””
Maya looked shocked.
“He raised you?””
Daniel nodded.
“For years.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with anger and sadness.
“Because I didn’t know you existed.””
The answer hurt.
Marcus looked away.
Daniel continued.
“I believed he was you.””
A pause.
“I believed my father had finally come back.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“And then?””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“Then I realized he wasn’t you.””
Maya looked at him.
“How?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Because he never loved me.””
Silence.
“He trained me.””
A pause.
“He tested me.””
Another pause.
“But he never cared if I survived.””
Marcus felt something break inside him.
Because he understood.
The fake Marcus was everything Kenji wanted.
A perfect warrior.
No weakness.
No compassion.
No love.
A man who could wear his face without carrying his heart.
Marcus looked at Kenji.
“Where is he?””
Kenji smiled.
“Closer than you think.””
The lights suddenly went out.
Again.
But this time, Marcus was ready.
He heard movement.
One person.
Walking slowly.
Confidently.
A familiar rhythm.
The lights came back.
And Marcus saw him.
Standing in the doorway.
Himself.
The room went silent.
Maya stared.
Daniel looked away.
Elena raised her weapon.
The other Marcus smiled.
“Hello.””
Nobody answered.
The copy looked at Marcus.
“You look older.””
Marcus stared back.
“You look empty.””
The copy smiled.
“That is because I removed everything unnecessary.””
Maya stepped back.
She looked between them.
“This isn’t possible.””
The copy looked at her.
“I know who you are.””
Her expression hardened.
“Then you know I’m not afraid of you.””
A small smile appeared.
“You have his attitude.””
Marcus moved slightly in front of her.
The copy noticed.
“Still protecting.””
Marcus said nothing.
The copy looked disappointed.
“After all these years, you still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That love was the reason you lost.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“No.””
The copy stepped closer.
“It was.””
He pointed toward Daniel.
“You lost him.””
Then toward Maya.
“You lost her.””
Then toward Kenji.
“You lost everything.””
Marcus remained still.
“But you still think love made you stronger.””
The copy smiled.
“I proved you wrong.””
Marcus looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“You proved you were never me.””
The copy’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Marcus noticed.
“You have my face.””
He stepped forward.
“My memories.””
Another step.
“My skills.””
The copy watched him.
“But you never had my choice.””
Silence.
The copy’s smile disappeared.
Maya looked at her father.
Because she had never heard him sound like this.
Not as a warrior.
As a man.
The copy attacked first.
Fast.
Faster than Marcus expected.
Their movements were identical.
Every block.
Every strike.
Every counter.
It was like watching the same person fight himself.
But there was one difference.
Marcus fought to stop him.
The copy fought to destroy him.
The difference became clear after seconds.
The copy had no hesitation.
No restraint.
Marcus blocked a strike.
The copy smiled.
“You’re holding back.””
Marcus pushed him away.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I know what happens when I don’t.””
The copy attacked again.
Marcus moved.
Controlled.
Precise.
The copy became frustrated.
“You could have been unstoppable.””
Marcus blocked.
“I was never trying to be.””
The copy struck harder.
“You wasted your potential.””
“No.””
Marcus countered.
“I chose my humanity.””
The copy froze for a fraction of a second.
Marcus saw it.
A crack.
A weakness.
Not physical.
Emotional.
Because the copy understood the word.
But did not understand the feeling.
Marcus stepped back.
“You know what your problem is?””
The copy stared.
“You think being unable to feel pain means you are stronger.””
A pause.
“But pain is how we know something matters.””
The copy looked at him.
“You’re wrong.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Maya.
Then Daniel.
“Those two people are the reason I kept fighting.””
The copy followed his eyes.
And for the first time…
Something like confusion appeared on his face.
Kenji saw it.
“No.””
The word came quietly.
Everyone looked at him.
Kenji’s expression had changed.
Because he realized something.
The copy was not supposed to hesitate.
Ever.
“You were supposed to remove that.””
The copy looked at him.
“Remove what?””
Kenji stepped forward.
“That.””
He pointed at Marcus.
“That weakness.””
The copy looked back at Marcus.
Then at Maya.
Then Daniel.
And something unexpected happened.
He lowered his weapon.
Just slightly.
Kenji noticed.
“No.””
The copy looked at him.
“You said emotions were useless.””
Kenji remained silent.
The copy continued:
“But I remember everything.””
Marcus froze.
The copy looked at him.
“I remember her.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“Who?””
The copy looked toward the recording.
“Maya’s mother.””
Silence.
The copy’s voice became quieter.
“She didn’t hate me.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“She knew what I was.””
A pause.
“And she still tried to save me.””
Kenji stepped forward.
“Enough.””
The copy ignored him.
“She told me something before she died.””
Marcus whispered:
“What?””
The copy looked directly at him.
“She said there was still a person inside me.””
The room became silent.
Because even the fake Marcus had a memory Kenji could not erase.
A piece of humanity.
Kenji moved suddenly.
A weapon appeared in his hand.
He aimed at the copy.
“You failed.””
The shot fired.
Marcus moved before thinking.
He pushed the copy aside.
The bullet hit the wall.
Everyone froze.
Marcus looked at the copy.
The copy looked back.
And for the first time…
Marcus saw something impossible.
Gratitude.
Kenji stepped back.
“This changes nothing.””
He smiled.
“Because you still don’t know the final truth.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What final truth?””
Kenji walked toward the exit.
“The man who destroyed your family…”
A pause.
“He was not your copy.””
Everyone froze.
Kenji smiled.
“He was your brother.””
Marcus felt the world disappear.
“My brother?””
Kenji nodded.
“And he is still alive.””
He looked at Daniel.
Then Maya.
Then Marcus.
“The family you thought you lost…”
A pause.
“Is much bigger than you imagined.””
Kenji disappeared into the darkness.
Marcus stood there, surrounded by impossible truths.
A daughter.
A son.
A copy.
A hidden brother.
And one final mystery.
May you like
Who was the man who had destroyed everything?
And why did he wear Marcus Vale’s face?
