Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Bottle
Molly had been afraid of Adrian Vale before.
Now she was afraid because she realized he was afraid too.
That was somehow worse.
The banquet hall remained frozen around them.
Nobody reached for their drinks.
Nobody whispered.
Even the people who had spent the entire evening pretending nothing could shake them were watching the scene unfold.
Molly slowly stood.
Lily refused to let go of her hand.
“I bought it at a store,” Molly said.
“A little shop downtown. That’s all.””
Adrian stared at her.
“What store?””
Molly hesitated.
She didn’t like the way the question felt.
It wasn’t curiosity.
It was desperation.
“I don’t remember the name.””
“You don’t remember?””
“No.””
Her voice became firmer.
“Because I didn’t think a perfume would become a problem.””
The security guard looked at Adrian, waiting for instructions.
Adrian ignored him.
His eyes remained fixed on Molly.
“What does the bottle look like?””
Molly frowned.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I said I don’t know.””
For a moment, something unexpected happened.
Adrian almost looked impressed.
Most people backed down when he raised his voice.
Molly didn’t.
She was scared, but she wasn’t pretending.
He recognized that.
Lily tugged on Molly’s sleeve.
“Daddy.””
Adrian looked down.
The anger in his face disappeared immediately.
“What?””
“She smells like her.””
The simple statement cut deeper than any accusation could.
Adrian closed his eyes for half a second.
Five years.
Five years of searching.
Five years of empty answers.
Five years of telling Lily that her mother loved her, even though he didn’t know if she would ever come home.
He remembered the last night he saw his wife.
He remembered her perfume.
He remembered the way she hugged Lily before leaving.
He remembered the promise she made.
“I’ll be back before bedtime.””
She never came back.
Everyone had eventually accepted the story.
A tragic disappearance.
A woman caught in the dangerous world surrounding Adrian.
A woman who became another unsolved mystery.
But Adrian never accepted it.
Not completely.
Because something always bothered him.
There had been no body.
No final goodbye.
No proof.
Only silence.
And now a waitress standing in his banquet hall smelled exactly like the woman he lost.
Molly watched his expression change.
She didn’t know the history.
She didn’t know the pain.
She only knew that somehow she had walked into something much bigger than herself.
“I think there’s been a mistake,” she said.
Adrian looked back at her.
“What’s your last name?””
She hesitated.
“Carter.””
“Where were you born?””
Molly’s eyebrows pulled together.
“Why are you asking me that?””
“Answer me.””
The command made the room tense.
Molly took a step back.
“No.””
Everyone reacted.
A few guests looked shocked.
The waitress had just refused Adrian Vale.
But Molly had reached her limit.
“I came here to serve dinner,” she said quietly.
“I didn’t come here to be questioned like I did something wrong.””
Adrian stared at her.
For the first time, he seemed to realize how frightening he appeared.
His voice lowered.
“I’m trying to understand why my daughter thinks you’re her mother.””
Molly looked at Lily.
The little girl was still crying.
And suddenly Molly felt something she couldn’t explain.
Not fear.
Something closer to sadness.
Because whatever happened to Lily’s mother, this child had been carrying that loss for a long time.
Molly knelt again.
“Sweetheart,” she whispered.
“What was your mommy’s name?””
Lily looked at Adrian.
He stiffened.
A small movement.
Almost invisible.
But Molly noticed.
Lily looked back at her.
“Amelia.””
The name hit Adrian like a physical blow.
Molly saw it.
The change.
The way his face lost color.
The security guard noticed too.
“Boss?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Because there was only one person who knew that name.
Only one person who called his wife Amelia.
Molly.
A stranger.
A waitress.
A woman who should have known nothing.
“Who told you that name?”” Adrian asked.
Molly looked confused.
“Told me what?””
“Amelia.””
“I don’t know anyone named Amelia.””
Adrian moved closer.
“Then why did my daughter say you smell like her?””
“I don’t know.””
Her voice cracked slightly.
And then something happened that made the entire room go quiet again.
Molly touched her own wrist.
The same place Lily had touched.
Her expression changed.
Not because she remembered a person.
Because she remembered a moment.
“A few months ago…” Molly said slowly.
Adrian waited.
“I found an old bottle of perfume at a secondhand store.””
His eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“It was in a box of things someone donated.””
“Where?””
“I told you, I don’t know the name.””
“Describe it.””
Molly swallowed.
“It was a small glass bottle. No label. Just a faded ribbon around the top.””
Adrian went completely still.
The security guard’s face changed.
Because they both knew.
Adrian knew exactly what bottle she was describing.
It wasn’t just perfume.
It was a custom scent made years ago for Amelia.
One bottle.
One person.
One memory.
Molly noticed their reactions.
“What?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Lily.
Then back at Molly.
And the suspicion in his eyes was slowly being replaced by something much more dangerous.
Hope.
But hope was dangerous because it could destroy you when it was wrong.
“Take her somewhere private,” Adrian said.
The security guard stepped forward.
Molly immediately moved back.
“No.””
Adrian stopped.
“I’m not trying to hurt you.””
“You don’t know me.””
“No,” he said.
His voice was quieter now.
“But I need to know why you have something that belonged to my wife.””
Molly looked down at Lily.
The child reached for her again.
And that was when Molly noticed something she hadn’t seen before.
A small necklace around Lily’s neck.
A necklace with a symbol carved into it.
The same symbol that had been engraved on the inside of the perfume bottle she found.
Molly’s stomach dropped.
Because suddenly she remembered something.
A note that came with the bottle.
Three words written on the back.
Words she thought meant nothing.
Until now.
The truth was hidden.
Molly looked at Adrian.
Her lips parted.
And for the first time, she understood why he looked afraid.
Because whatever she had found months ago wasn’t just a forgotten perfume bottle.
It was a piece of a secret.
May you like
A secret someone had tried very hard to bury.
And now Molly was standing in the middle of a room full of dangerous people holding the one thing that could bring the truth back.
