Chapter 7: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
Adrian Vale had spent five years searching for a ghost.
Now the ghost had a name.
And it was standing in his hallway.
“Mason.””
The name left Adrian’s mouth like a warning.
The older man standing across from him didn’t move.
Molly looked between them.
She didn’t need an explanation to understand one thing.
This was not a normal family reunion.
The tension between the two brothers filled the room before either of them spoke again.
Mason Vale looked older than Adrian.
Not just because of gray hair or tired eyes.
Because he looked like a man who had been carrying a secret for too long.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Adrian said.
Mason gave a bitter smile.
“Neither should she.””
His eyes moved toward Molly.
She immediately felt uncomfortable.
“Me?””
Mason looked at the perfume on her wrist.
“That scent.””
Adrian stepped between them.
“Don’t look at her like that.””
Mason laughed quietly.
“Still protecting strangers.””
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Still hiding behind excuses.””
The words hit.
Molly watched them carefully.
This was bigger than a family argument.
This was years of anger finally finding somewhere to land.
Lily stood close to Molly, holding her hand.
The little girl didn’t understand everything.
But she understood enough.
She was scared.
Molly squeezed her fingers gently.
“It’s okay.””
But she wasn’t sure if she believed that herself.
Adrian turned back to Mason.
“You disappeared.””
Mason looked away.
“I left.””
“You ran.””
“I survived.””
The answer made Adrian go silent.
Molly noticed.
There was something underneath those words.
Something painful.
Mason looked at Lily.
His expression softened.
“Look at you.””
Lily stared at him.
“Who are you?””
Mason swallowed.
“I’m your uncle.””
She looked at Adrian.
Adrian nodded slowly.
“He’s my brother.””
Lily stepped closer to Molly.
She didn’t trust him.
Molly understood why.
Children could feel when adults were carrying something broken.
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“You knew.””
Mason looked at him.
“Knew what?””
“About Amelia.””
Silence.
A silence that answered the question before Mason did.
Molly felt her stomach tighten.
“You knew she was alive?””
Mason looked at her.
His face showed regret.
“Yes.””
The room changed.
Adrian didn’t move.
Not at first.
It was almost worse than yelling.
A quiet kind of shock.
“You knew?””
Mason nodded.
“For a while.””
“For a while?””
Adrian’s voice cracked.
The anger finally broke through.
“Five years, Mason.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You don’t know.””
His voice became heavier.
“You don’t know what it was like watching Lily ask where her mother was.””
Mason looked down.
“You don’t know what it was like telling her maybe Mommy was coming home when I had no idea if she was alive.””
Molly looked away.
She felt like she was witnessing something too personal.
A family wound opening.
But she couldn’t leave.
Not anymore.
Not after everything.
“Why didn’t you tell him?”” she asked.
Mason looked at her.
“Because if I told Adrian, she would have died.””
Everyone became still.
Adrian’s face changed.
“What?””
Mason walked toward the dining table and sat down.
His exhaustion finally showed.
“Amelia didn’t disappear because she wanted to leave.””
“Then why?””
Mason looked at Adrian.
“Because someone was trying to kill her.””
The words settled over the room.
Lily immediately looked at Adrian.
He forced himself to remain calm.
“Who?””
Mason shook his head.
“That’s the problem.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means you’ve been looking in the wrong direction.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“I searched everyone.””
“No.””
Mason looked directly at him.
“You searched your enemies.””
A pause.
“You never searched your family.””
The truth of it hurt because Adrian knew it was possible.
Molly thought back to everything.
The hidden key.
The message.
The perfume.
The photograph.
All roads led back to the people closest to Amelia.
“Who wanted her gone?”” Adrian asked.
Mason didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Lily.
“Not here.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
Mason sighed.
“I do if I’m the reason she survived.””
The words stopped him.
Adrian stared.
“What did you say?””
Mason leaned forward.
“I helped her disappear.””
The room went silent.
Molly felt Lily grip her hand tighter.
Adrian looked like he had been betrayed all over again.
“You helped my wife leave me?””
“No.””
Mason’s voice became firm.
“I helped your wife stay alive.””
Mason told them everything.
Not all at once.
Not easily.
Because some truths hurt more when spoken.
Five years ago, Amelia had discovered something inside the Vale organization.
Money was being moved.
Names were being hidden.
People Adrian trusted were secretly working against him.
At first, she thought it was business.
Then she realized it was personal.
Someone close to the family wanted Adrian removed.
And Lily was the weakness they planned to use.
“She came to me,” Mason said.
Adrian stared at him.
“Why you?””
“Because she knew I was the only person you wouldn’t suspect.””
That answer hurt.
Because it was true.
Adrian trusted Mason.
Or he had.
“What happened next?””
Mason looked at Molly.
“She created a plan.””
“What plan?””
“To disappear.””
Molly frowned.
“But why leave the perfume?””
Mason’s eyes moved toward her.
“Because she knew one day someone might find it.””
“Someone?””
Mason nodded.
“She knew Adrian would never stop searching.””
Adrian looked down.
“And she knew Lily needed hope.””
The room became quiet.
For the first time, nobody was angry.
Only broken.
Then Mason reached into his coat.
Adrian immediately tensed.
But Mason pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I promised her.””
Adrian stared.
“An envelope?””
“She told me to give it to you only if the perfume came back.””
Molly’s heart raced.
The perfume.
Everything had been waiting for this moment.
Adrian slowly took the envelope.
His hands shook.
A man who feared nothing was afraid to open a letter.
Because sometimes the truth hurt more than not knowing.
He opened it.
Read the first line.
And his face changed.
“What?”” Molly asked softly.
Adrian didn’t answer.
He handed the letter to Mason.
Mason read it.
Then looked at Lily.
Then at Molly.
His expression turned into pure fear.
“What?””
Adrian finally spoke.
His voice was barely audible.
“Amelia wasn’t hiding from us.””
May you like
He looked at Molly.
“She was hiding from the person who sent you that perfume.””
