Chapter 5: The Brother Who Ran

Adrian Vale had always believed that fear revealed the truth.

Not words.

Not promises.

Not tears.

Fear.

A person could rehearse a lie. They could prepare an excuse. They could build an entire story designed to make themselves look innocent.

But fear was different.

Fear moved before the mind could control it.

And right now, his brother had run.

Adrian stood silently in the private room, staring at Marcus.

“Where is he?””

“Outside,” Marcus replied.

“The driver stopped him before he reached the car.””

Adrian nodded once.

That was all.

But Molly could feel the change.

The man standing in front of her was no longer confused.

He was focused.

The same way a person became focused when they finally saw the shape of the danger in front of them.

Lily noticed too.

She stepped closer to Adrian.

“Daddy?””

He immediately looked down.

The hardness disappeared from his face.

“I’m right here.””

“Are you mad?””

Adrian looked at his daughter.

Then at the photograph she held.

Then at Molly.

“No,” he said softly.

But Molly knew that wasn’t completely true.

He was angry.

Just not at Lily.

Not at her.

At someone else.

Someone who had been hiding the truth.

Adrian walked toward the door.

“Molly.””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

“You’re coming with us.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“I need answers.””

“I already told you everything I know.””

“I believe that.””

The statement surprised her.

After everything, she hadn’t expected trust.

“Then why do you need me?””

“Because whatever happened started with that perfume.””

Molly looked uncomfortable.

“I’m not part of your world.””

Adrian paused.

“You think I wanted you involved?””

The honesty of the question caught her.

“No.””

“Neither did I.””

For a moment, they simply looked at each other.

Two people who should never have crossed paths.

A powerful man surrounded by secrets.

A waitress who wanted nothing more than a quiet life.

But somehow, they were connected by a bottle of perfume and a woman who vanished.

Molly looked at Lily.

The little girl was watching her carefully.

Waiting.

Molly sighed.

“Where are we going?””

Adrian answered.

“My family home.””

The words made Marcus look uncomfortable.

“Boss.””

Adrian turned.

“What?””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“After tonight?””

Especially after tonight.

Adrian understood.

Someone had already tried to hide the truth.

Someone had already tried to leave.

Going back to the place where the secret began could be dangerous.

But staying away meant allowing whoever was responsible to keep control.

“No more hiding,” Adrian said.

Molly noticed something in his voice.

Not anger.

A decision.

The Vale family estate sat outside the city, surrounded by tall gates and enough land to make Molly feel like she had stepped into another world.

She had never seen anything like it.

The house wasn’t just large.

It was old.

The kind of old that carried memories in the walls.

Lights glowed from every window.

Security cameras watched every entrance.

Men in suits moved quietly around the property.

Molly immediately felt like she didn’t belong.

She adjusted her waitress uniform, suddenly aware of how out of place she looked.

Adrian noticed.

“You don’t have to be nervous.””

She looked at him.

“That’s easy for you to say.””

He almost smiled.

Almost.

“You’re in my house.””

“Exactly.””

The answer surprised him.

Molly looked around.

“Everyone here knows who you are.””

“And?””

“And I’m just some woman who serves food at events.””

Adrian studied her.

“Is that what you think?””

Molly looked away.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said quietly, “Because people like you make people like me disappear.””

The words landed harder than she intended.

Adrian’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Understanding.

Because he knew what kind of man the world believed him to be.

And maybe he had spent so long being feared that he forgot what it looked like from the outside.

Before he could respond, Lily called out.

“Daddy.””

They both turned.

Lily stood near the entrance, holding the photograph.

“Can we look for Mommy?””

Adrian walked toward her.

“We will.””

“Promise?””

He hesitated.

A promise was dangerous.

He had made promises before.

Promises he couldn’t keep.

But looking at his daughter, he knew she needed one.

“I promise.””

Molly watched him.

For the first time, she saw something beyond the rumors.

A man carrying regret.

The family dining room was exactly where Adrian expected it to be.

The room where generations of Vales had gathered.

The room where deals were made.

The room where secrets were exchanged between people who shared the same last name.

A long table stretched across the center.

Molly looked around.

“This is where your family eats?””

“Yes.””

She frowned.

“That message was too obvious.””

Adrian looked at her.

“What?””

“The truth is hidden where the family eats.””

She walked slowly around the room.

“If someone wanted you to find something, why would they make it that easy?””

Marcus looked interested.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying whoever left that message wanted him to think of this room.””

Adrian watched her.

“And?””

“And maybe the truth isn’t hidden here.””

Silence.

Molly continued.

“Maybe the truth is hidden because of what happens here.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What happens here?””

“Family conversations. Arguments. Celebrations. Decisions.””

She looked at the table.

“Someone could hide something in plain sight.””

Adrian walked toward the table.

Five years.

Five years of sitting here.

Five years of searching.

And suddenly a stranger was seeing things he missed.

Then Lily pointed.

“Mommy sat there.””

Everyone turned.

She pointed to a chair near the end of the table.

Adrian froze.

Because Amelia always sat there.

Always.

He walked toward the chair slowly.

And underneath the wooden frame, near the bottom edge, he saw something.

A small mark.

A symbol.

The same one on Lily’s necklace.

Molly stepped closer.

“What is that?””

Adrian touched it.

His face changed.

Because he knew.

This was not random.

This was Amelia’s mark.

A message.

May you like

A warning.

And someone had been sitting inches away from it for years.
