Chapter 4: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Gone

Adrian Vale had faced men with guns pointed at his chest.

He had walked into rooms where everyone wanted him dead.

He had survived betrayals from people who swore they loved him.

But nothing prepared him for a small photograph in a waitress’s hand.

Because the photograph proved something he had spent years refusing to accept.

Amelia had not disappeared randomly.

She had left a trail.

And someone had hidden it.

“What did she write?”” Molly asked again.

Adrian stared at the back of the picture.

His thumb moved across the handwriting.

A memory.

A wound.

A ghost.

“She wrote, ‘If Lily ever finds this, tell her I never stopped looking for a way home.’”

Lily gasped softly.

“Mommy wrote that?””

Adrian looked at his daughter.

His eyes were wet.

“She did.””

The little girl reached for the photograph.

Adrian gave it to her carefully.

Lily held it with both hands.

For the first time all evening, she smiled.

A small smile.

A fragile one.

But it was there.

Molly watched them.

And something about the moment made her chest ache.

Because whatever Adrian Vale was to the world, right now he was just a father watching his daughter hold a piece of the mother she lost.

But then Adrian looked back at Molly.

The softness disappeared.

Not completely.

But enough.

“Who gave you the box?””

Molly shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Someone had to.””

“No.””

“Molly.””

She flinched at hearing her name.

“I found it outside my apartment.””

Adrian went still.

“When?””

“Four months ago.””

“Where exactly?””

“On the steps.””

“Was anyone there?””

“No.””

“Any message?””

Molly hesitated.

That hesitation told him everything.

Adrian stepped closer.

“What?””

Molly looked uncomfortable.

“There was something.””

“What was it?””

“A card.””

“What did it say?””

Molly looked down.

“I threw it away.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Why?””

“Because I thought it was creepy.””

“What did it say?””

She swallowed.

“‘The truth is hidden where the family eats.’”

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

And Adrian looked like he had just been punched.

“The family eats,” Marcus repeated.

Adrian walked slowly toward the window.

His mind was moving faster than he wanted.

The family dining room.

The old house.

The private dinners.

The place where Amelia spent most of her time.

The place where she had trusted everyone.

Too many memories.

Too many possibilities.

“Who knew about the message?”” Adrian asked.

“No one.””

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

“Not friends?””

“No.””

“Not family?””

Molly’s face changed.

Family.

There was something in that word.

Something she noticed.

“You think someone in your family did this?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

For years, he had believed the danger came from outside.

Enemies.

Rivals.

People who wanted his power.

But Amelia had trusted the people closest to her.

And maybe that was the mistake.

Lily looked up.

“Daddy?””

Adrian immediately turned back.

“Yes?””

“Is Mommy hiding?””

The question broke something in him.

Because he had wondered the same thing.

Maybe Amelia wasn’t dead.

Maybe she had been forced away.

Maybe she was waiting.

Maybe she had been trying to protect them.

But if she was alive…

Why hadn’t she come home?

“I don’t know,” he said.

Again.

That painful answer.

Molly watched Lily’s face fall.

And before she could stop herself, she spoke.

“Maybe she was trying to come back.””

Everyone looked at her.

Molly continued quietly.

“I don’t know your wife. I don’t know what happened. But someone left that perfume and that picture somewhere you would never find it.””

Adrian studied her.

“Why?””

“Because maybe they wanted someone else to find it.””

The room became silent.

That idea had not escaped him.

But hearing it from a stranger made it feel different.

Because Molly wasn’t protecting his family.

She wasn’t protecting his enemies.

She had no reason to lie.

A knock interrupted them.

Marcus opened the door slightly.

A man from the banquet hall whispered something into his ear.

Marcus’s face changed.

Adrian noticed.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Someone tried to leave.””

“Who?””

The security guard hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Your brother.””

Adrian’s expression turned cold.

“My brother?””

Marcus nodded.

“He left right after the waitress showed you the photograph.””

The room seemed to get colder.

Because Adrian knew his brother.

He knew every habit.

Every lie.

Every weakness.

And one thing about him had always been true.

He only ran when he had something to hide.

Adrian looked at Molly.

Then at Lily.

Then at the photograph in his daughter’s hands.

A secret buried for five years had just opened its eyes.

And someone inside his own family was already trying to escape it.
