Chapter 9: The Mark of the Hidden Family

Molly Carter had spent twenty-five years trying to understand where she came from.

Now she was discovering that the truth was something she had never been prepared to find.

She wasn’t just a waitress who stumbled into a powerful family’s secret.

She was part of the secret.

The room felt smaller than it had moments before.

Everyone was looking at her differently.

Not because she had changed.

Because they had.

Adrian stood near the center of the room, his expression impossible to read.

But Molly noticed something.

He wasn’t looking at her like a threat anymore.

He was looking at her like someone he needed to protect.

And somehow that scared her more.

“What does it mean?”” Molly asked Marcus.

The security guard looked uncomfortable.

“The perfume was a signal.””

“A signal for who?””

Marcus glanced at Adrian.

Adrian answered.

“For people who knew Amelia’s methods.””

Molly crossed her arms.

“So someone left it knowing I would find it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

That was the worst part.

Because every person in the room seemed to know there was another layer.

Another truth hiding underneath.

Molly looked at Adrian.

“I need someone to explain this to me.””

Adrian nodded slowly.

“You deserve that.””

The words surprised her.

Coming from him, they sounded almost like an apology.

Molly sat down.

For the first time all night, she felt tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

She had entered a banquet hall expecting to serve dinner.

Now she was learning that her father had secrets, a missing aunt she never knew existed, and a connection to a woman who had become a legend inside a dangerous family.

Adrian sat across from her.

“My wife’s family was complicated.””

Molly gave him a look.

“That’s one way to describe it.””

A small silence passed.

Then, unexpectedly, Adrian almost smiled.

It was brief.

But Molly noticed.

“She was different from us,” he said.

“Your wife?””

He nodded.

“Amelia believed people could change.””

Molly looked at Lily.

“And you?””

Adrian looked down.

“I wanted to believe that.””

The answer was honest.

Molly respected honesty.

Even from someone like him.

“Tell me about her.””

The request surprised him.

But he answered.

“She was brave.””

A pause.

“Too brave sometimes.””

Molly smiled slightly.

“That sounds familiar.””

Adrian looked at her.

For a second, something passed between them.

A recognition.

Two people who had both been shaped by losing family.

Then Marcus interrupted.

“We found the source.””

Everyone turned.

Adrian stood.

“Where?””

“The old storage building near the east property.””

Mason looked alarmed.

“No.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What?””

“That place was supposed to be empty.””

Marcus nodded.

“It was.””

“Was?””

“There was evidence someone had been there recently.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Take us there.””

Molly stood.

“I’m coming.””

Adrian immediately shook his head.

“No.””

She stared at him.

“Excuse me?””

“It’s dangerous.””

“So is everything else I’ve learned tonight.””

“That’s different.””

“How?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because she was right.

He wanted to keep her away from danger.

But danger had already found her.

Molly stepped closer.

“Someone used me to send a message. Someone connected me to this family. I have a right to know why.””

Adrian studied her.

Then nodded.

“Fine.””

Mason looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

Adrian looked at Molly.

“No.””

A pause.

“But I think she’s stronger than we expected.””

The old storage building sat away from the main house.

It was smaller.

Older.

Forgotten.

The kind of place people stopped noticing.

Which made it the perfect hiding place.

Marcus unlocked the door.

The inside smelled like dust and old wood.

Molly followed Adrian carefully.

She expected something dramatic.

A hidden room.

A secret file.

Something impossible.

Instead, she saw boxes.

Shelves.

Old belongings.

A normal-looking place.

Then Adrian stopped.

Because he saw something on the wall.

A photograph.

A photograph of Amelia.

And beside it was another picture.

A little girl.

Molly.

Her breath caught.

“No.””

Adrian turned.

“You know her?””

Molly stepped closer.

The picture was old.

She was maybe six years old.

Standing beside her father.

And Amelia.

Molly stared.

“I don’t remember this.””

Mason whispered.

“Because you were too young.””

Molly looked at him.

“You knew?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I didn’t know Thomas had a daughter.””

She touched the photograph.

“Why would my father hide this?””

Adrian looked around the room.

“Maybe he wasn’t hiding you.””

“Then what?””

A voice answered from behind them.

“Protecting you.””

Everyone turned.

A woman stood in the doorway.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably familiar.

Molly froze.

Because she knew those eyes.

She had seen them in the photograph.

Adrian went completely still.

“No.””

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“Adrian.””

The name broke him.

Because he knew.

He knew before anyone said anything.

“Amelia.””

For five years, he had imagined this moment.

He imagined anger.

Questions.

Pain.

But when his wife stood in front of him alive, none of that mattered.

He just stared.

Like he was afraid she would disappear again.

Lily’s voice broke the silence.

“Mommy?””

Amelia looked toward her.

And the world stopped.

“Lily.””

The little girl ran.

Adrian caught her instinctively, but he didn’t stop her.

Lily reached Amelia and held onto her.

The sound Amelia made was not a cry.

It was something deeper.

A mother finally holding her child again.

Molly watched from a distance.

She felt like she was witnessing something beautiful and painful at the same time.

Amelia looked at her.

And tears filled her eyes.

“You found it.””

Molly frowned.

May you like

“Found what?””

“The family you never knew you had.””
