Chapter 2: The Other Half

The wedding reception had been filled with laughter only minutes earlier.

Now, nobody spoke.

The music continued playing softly in the background, but it sounded distant, almost unreal.

Celeste held the purse tightly.

“No,” she whispered.

Darius noticed her reaction.

Not anger.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

“Darius: What’s inside the pocket?””

Celeste looked away.

“That’s private.””

Amara stood slowly from the floor.

Her eyes stayed fixed on the purse.

“My mom’s picture…”

She stepped forward.

“Is it in there?””

Celeste looked at the little girl.

For a moment, something in her expression softened.

Then it disappeared.

“You need to leave this alone.””

Amara’s face fell.

“But that’s my mother.””

The words hit harder than anyone expected.

Darius carefully reached for the purse.

“Darius: I’m going to open this. If there’s nothing there, we’ll apologize and move on.””

Celeste didn’t answer.

That silence told him everything.

He opened the inside pocket.

At first, there was nothing.

Then his fingers touched something hidden beneath the lining.

A folded piece of old paper.

Darius slowly pulled it out.

The guests gasped.

It was another torn photograph.

The other half.

Amara covered her mouth.

“That’s…”

Darius placed both pieces on the table near them.

The torn edges matched perfectly.

The two halves became one picture.

A little girl.

A smiling young woman.

A moment from years ago that had somehow traveled through time.

Celeste stepped backward.

Her face lost all color.

“No…”

Darius looked at her.

“You know this woman.””

Celeste didn’t respond.

Amara looked between them.

“Who is she?””

Celeste’s hands began shaking.

The confident wealthy woman from moments earlier was gone.

Now she looked like someone standing in front of a memory she had spent years trying to bury.

Darius picked up the photograph.

“Celeste. Answer her.””

Celeste stared at the picture.

At the young woman’s face.

At the child in her arms.

“I…”

Her voice cracked.

“I haven’t seen that picture in twenty years.””

Amara’s eyes widened.

“My mom said someone stole it.””

Celeste looked at her.

“What did you say?””

Amara swallowed.

“She said someone took part of it away.””

The room became even quieter.

Darius watched carefully.

“Who was your mother?””

Amara looked down.

“She…”

Her voice became small.

“She died when I was little.””

Several guests exchanged shocked looks.

Celeste closed her eyes.

For one second, she looked heartbroken.

Then she opened them again, and the fear returned.

“Where is your father?””

Amara didn’t answer.

She looked away.

Darius noticed.

Something about that question mattered.

A lot.

“Darius: Celeste, why do you have half of a child’s photograph hidden in your purse?””

Celeste looked at the picture.

Her lips moved.

But no sound came out.

Then a man from the crowd stepped forward.

“Celeste?””

Everyone turned.

It was the groom.

His expression was confused.

“What’s happening?””

Celeste quickly covered the photograph with her hand.

“Nothing.””

But Darius saw something else.

A small name written on the back of the photo.

A name that made his entire expression change.

Because it wasn’t Amara’s name.

It was someone else’s.

May you like

Someone connected to Celeste.

Someone who should have been impossible to find.
