Chapter 3: The Name on the Back
The reception continued around them, but nobody was celebrating anymore.
Guests pretended not to stare.
They failed.
Darius held the photograph carefully.
The old paper looked fragile, like one wrong movement could destroy the only evidence of a secret that had survived for decades.
Amara stood beside him.
She looked smaller than before.
“Darius,” she whispered, “why does she have my mom’s picture?””
Darius didn’t answer immediately.
He had learned something important working security.
People often revealed the truth before they spoke.
A nervous hand.
A sudden silence.
A person protecting something that mattered.
Celeste was protecting this photograph.
Not because she wanted it.
Because she was afraid of it.
Darius turned the picture over.
There was faded writing on the back.
A handwritten name.
His eyes narrowed.
“Darius: Celeste…”
She looked up.
“What?””
“Who is Elena?””
The moment he said the name, Celeste froze.
Amara noticed.
“You know her.””
Celeste looked at the little girl.
“Yes.””
Her answer was barely audible.
Amara’s eyes filled with tears.
“Then why did you say I stole your purse?””
Celeste looked away.
“I didn’t know who you were.””
“But you knew my mom?””
Celeste opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
The groom stepped closer again.
“Celeste, what is going on?””
She ignored him.
Darius watched her carefully.
“Tell her.””
Celeste looked around at the guests.
At the cameras.
At the people who had come to celebrate a wedding.
Then she looked back at Amara.
“I knew your mother before you were born.””
Amara took a small step forward.
“Was she nice?””
Celeste’s face changed.
The question hurt her.
“Yes,” she whispered.
A tear formed in her eye.
“She was the kindest person I ever knew.””
Darius noticed something strange.
Celeste wasn’t acting like someone caught in a crime.
She was acting like someone caught carrying a memory.
“Then why hide the picture?””
Celeste looked at the purse.
“Because I thought it was gone forever.””
Amara frowned.
“My mom said someone took it.””
Celeste looked directly at her.
“Your mother told you that?””
Amara nodded.
“She said she lost something important before she left.””
The room seemed to disappear around Celeste.
Before she left.
Those words meant something.
Darius saw it.
“You thought she left.””
Celeste looked down.
“I was told she was gone.””
Amara stepped closer.
“She didn’t leave me.””
Celeste looked at her.
The little girl’s voice became stronger.
“She protected me.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Celeste whispered:
“You look exactly like her.””
Amara wiped her eyes.
“My mom?””
Celeste nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Darius watched the two of them.
A wealthy woman in an expensive dress.
A child holding a torn photograph.
Two people connected by a secret neither understood.
Then his radio crackled.
A voice came through.
“Darius, you need to check the security footage immediately.””
He touched the radio.
“Why?””
The voice hesitated.
“Because someone else was near that purse before the girl picked it up.””
Darius looked toward the purse.
Celeste looked terrified.
And Amara suddenly realized something.
May you like
The person who put the photograph inside the purse…
might still be inside the wedding hall.
