Chapter 7: The Stranger at the Door
Nobody moved.
The figure outside the wedding hall stood completely still.
Like they had been waiting for everyone to notice.
Darius raised his hand.
“Everyone stay back.””
The security officers moved toward the entrance.
Celeste grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“You know who that is.””
Her face was filled with fear.
“I know who they work for.””
Darius looked toward the door.
“Who?””
Celeste released his arm.
“Marcus.””
The word was barely audible.
Amara heard it.
Again.
The same name.
The same person connected to every unanswered question.
Darius approached the door slowly.
“Open it.””
The officer beside him hesitated.
“But—”
“Open it.””
The lock clicked.
The door began to move.
But before it fully opened, the figure stepped backward into the hallway.
Running.
Darius immediately followed.
He reached the hallway.
Empty.
Only the photograph remained on the floor.
He picked it up.
Then stopped.
This picture was older than the others.
And it showed something impossible.
Elena.
Celeste.
And a baby.
Amara.
Darius stared.
Behind him, Celeste arrived.
One look at the photograph was enough.
She collapsed against the wall.
“No…”
Amara walked closer.
“What is it?””
Celeste didn’t answer.
Darius turned the photograph around.
There was writing on the back.
A date.
A hospital name.
And one sentence.
*SHE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHO HER FATHER WAS.*
Amara looked confused.
“My father?””
The question changed everything.
Celeste looked at her.
Then at the photograph.
Then she whispered:
“Elena never told you.””
“Told me what?””
Celeste covered her mouth.
Darius stepped between them.
“Celeste.””
She shook her head.
“I can’t.””
“You have to.””
The guests watched silently.
The entire wedding had become a place where secrets were finally escaping.
Celeste looked at Amara.
“Your father…”
She stopped.
Her phone suddenly rang.
Everyone jumped.
The caller ID appeared.
Unknown number.
Darius answered.
“Who is this?””
Static.
Then a voice.
Older.
Calm.
Dangerously calm.
“Celeste.””
Her face changed.
She recognized it.
“Marcus?””
The entire room froze.
The voice continued.
“You should have left the past buried.””
Celeste gripped the phone.
“You’re alive.””
A quiet laugh came through.
“Yes.””
Amara stared.
Darius motioned for everyone to stay silent.
Celeste’s voice shook.
“You destroyed Elena’s life.””
“No.””
The voice answered.
“You did.””
Celeste looked like she had been struck.
Darius watched her carefully.
Marcus continued.
“You’re finally going to tell Amara the truth.””
Celeste whispered:
“What truth?””
A pause.
Then:
“The truth about why Elena trusted you…”
Another pause.
“And why she died believing you betrayed her.””
Amara gasped.
Celeste closed her eyes.
A tear fell.
Darius looked at her.
“Is that true?””
Celeste didn’t answer.
The phone crackled.
Marcus spoke one final sentence.
“Ask Celeste what happened the night Elena gave her the photograph.””
The call ended.
The room went silent.
Amara looked at Celeste.
“What happened that night?””
Celeste stared at the photograph in Darius’s hand.
The photograph of three people.
The photograph that should not exist.

Then she whispered:
“I was there when your mother disappeared.””
