Chapter 12: The Truth Beneath the Name

I stared at the phone screen.

The name looked impossible.

A mistake.

A glitch.

Anything except reality.

Terrence noticed my face.

“Darius?””

I couldn’t answer.

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“What is it?””

I turned the phone around.

Everyone looked.

And everyone went silent.

The message had been sent from:

*Terrence Carter.*

My wife’s brother.

My best friend during the darkest years of my life.

The man who stood beside me when I buried my wife.

The man who helped me raise Ava.

The man who claimed he was protecting us.

Ava looked at him.

“Uncle Terrence?””

Terrence’s face changed.

Not surprise.

Pain.

And that was somehow worse.

“Darius…”

I stepped back.

“No.””

He raised his hands.

“Listen to me.””

“Your number.””

“I can explain.””

“Everyone says that.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone.””

Terrence looked at Ava.

“I would never hurt her.””

I believed that.

That was the problem.

I had believed everyone.

Detective Harris took the phone.

“Mr. Carter, did you send this message?””

Terrence looked down.

“No.””

“Do you have access to this number?””

“No.””

“Then why is it connected to your identity?””

Terrence didn’t answer.

I felt something inside me breaking.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“Why didn’t you tell me Simone had a sister?””

Terrence looked away.

“Because your wife asked me not to.””

“Why didn’t you tell me she was taking money?””

“Because I was trying to prove it.””

“Why didn’t you tell me about the recordings?””

“Because I promised her.””

I stepped closer.

“And why did I receive a message from your phone accusing you?””

Silence.

That silence was different.

Because it wasn’t hiding.

It was fear.

Terrence finally spoke.

“Because someone is trying to frame me.””

Detective Harris looked at him.

“Who?””

Terrence looked at the door.

“I don’t know.””

Then Ava spoke.

Quietly.

“I do.””

Everyone turned.

My daughter stood there holding something.

A small piece of paper.

“Where did you get that?””

She looked at me.

“Mommy gave it to me.””

My heart stopped.

Again.

“How?””

Ava reached into her cardigan pocket.

The same pocket that had started everything.

“I forgot.””

She unfolded the paper.

“I was supposed to give it to you after the recorder.””

My hands shook.

I took it.

My wife’s handwriting.

Again.

But this time, only one sentence.

Darius,

If Terrence is blamed, ask him about the hospital room.

I looked at Terrence.

He closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

“What hospital room?””

Nobody answered.

Then Detective Harris’ radio crackled.

A voice came through.

“Detective, we found something.””

Everyone waited.

The officer continued.

“The hospital records show another visitor entered Elena Carter’s room the night before her death.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“The visitor was registered under a false name.””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“But the security footage confirms the person’s identity.””

The room felt colder.

“Who was it?””

The detective checked the report.

Then looked up.

“It was Darius Carter.””

I froze.

“What?””

“No.””

Terrence looked shocked.

“That’s impossible.””

But the detective kept going.

“The timestamp shows your ID was used.””

I shook my head.

“I was home.””

Ava looked at me.

“Daddy?””

My mind raced.

I had never been there.

I knew I hadn’t.

But someone had used my identity.

Someone had created proof.

Someone had planned this.

Then my phone received one final message.

A photograph.

I opened it.

It was a hospital security image.

A man walking into my wife’s room.

Same height.

Same build.

Wearing a jacket I owned.

But the face was blurred.

Underneath the picture was one sentence:

*You trusted the wrong person.*

I looked at the photo.

Then at everyone around me.

And suddenly I understood.

The mystery wasn’t only about who betrayed my wife.

It was about who had been pretending to be me.

May you like

And whoever it was…

had been close enough to touch my entire life.
