Chapter 6: The Doctor Who Kept the Last Promise

The ballroom had stopped feeling like a place where people celebrated love.

It felt like a place where secrets came to die.

Dr. Elaine Brooks walked slowly toward us, carrying a folder pressed against her chest.

She wasn’t dramatic.

She wasn’t angry.

She looked tired.

Like someone who had waited years to tell the truth.

Simone stared at her.

“Why are you here?””

Dr. Brooks looked at her.

“Because Ava finally did what her mother asked.””

Those words made Simone go silent.

I stepped forward.

“Doctor, what happened?””

She looked at me with sadness.

“Your wife knew something was wrong.””

My throat tightened.

“Wrong with her health?””

Dr. Brooks hesitated.

“No.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then what?””

She opened the folder.

“She believed someone was trying to make you think she was sicker than she really was.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Simone.

She immediately shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

Dr. Brooks didn’t even look at her.

“Your wife came to me three days before she died.””

She pulled out a document.

“She asked me to keep a copy of her records.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Why?””

“Because she believed someone would try to change the story after she was gone.””

The room filled with whispers.

Simone stepped forward.

“This is insane.””

Dr. Brooks finally looked at her.

“No, Simone.””

Her voice was calm.

“That is exactly what your sister-in-law believed you would say.””

The words hit me.

Sister-in-law?

I looked at Simone.

“What does she mean?””

Simone closed her eyes.

For a second, she looked defeated.

Then she whispered.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

My heart stopped.

Not a denial.

Not confusion.

A confession hidden inside a sentence.

“Wanted what to happen?”” I asked.

She looked at Ava.

Then at me.

“Your wife finding out.””

The air disappeared from the room.

I couldn’t move.

“What did she find out?””

Simone looked away.

Dr. Brooks answered.

“She found out Simone had been hiding financial information from her.””

I blinked.

“What?””

Terrence stepped closer.

“Darius, your wife discovered something before she died.””

“What?””

“She discovered Simone had been accessing accounts connected to your family.””

I looked at Simone.

“That’s a lie.””

But my voice lacked confidence.

Because suddenly everything had a different meaning.

The expensive gifts.

The constant help.

The way Simone always seemed to know exactly what we needed.

I had thought it was love.

What if it was preparation?

“What accounts?”” I asked.

Dr. Brooks looked at me.

“The ones your wife created for Ava.””

My daughter.

Everything stopped.

Ava’s future.

Her education.

Her security.

The things her mother had fought to protect.

I turned toward Simone.

“You took money from my daughter?””

“No.””

Her answer came too fast.

“I borrowed it.””

The room exploded.

People gasped.

Someone said, “Oh my God.””

I stared at her.

“You borrowed it?””

She started crying.

“I was going to put it back.””

“When?””

She had no answer.

“After you married me?””

Her silence answered.

The betrayal wasn’t just financial.

It was personal.

She wasn’t just hiding money.

She was hiding the truth about who she was.

Dr. Brooks placed the folder on the table.

“Your wife found evidence.””

She opened it.

“She confronted Simone.””

“And then?””

Dr. Brooks looked at Ava.

“Then she asked Ava to keep the recorder safe.””

I looked at my daughter.

“How did she remember all this?””

Dr. Brooks softened.

“Because your wife recorded a message for her too.””

My heart broke.

“She talked to Ava?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Dr. Brooks looked toward the flash drive.

“That’s what is on there.””

My hand tightened around it.

A message from my wife.

A message to my daughter.

A final piece of her voice.

Simone suddenly moved.

Not toward me.

Toward the table.

Toward the flash drive.

I saw it.

Everyone saw it.

She reached.

I grabbed her wrist before she touched it.

“Don’t.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Darius, you don’t understand.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I understand more than I ever have.””

She looked at me.

“I loved you.””

I believed that once.

Maybe part of me still wanted to.

But love without honesty was something else.

Something dangerous.

I let go of her wrist.

Dr. Brooks picked up the flash drive.

“We need to hear what your wife left behind.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

Ava came beside me.

I held her hand.

The laptop on the wedding planner’s table opened.

The flash drive was inserted.

A single file appeared.

No title.

Just a date.

The date of my wife’s death.

My heart pounded.

Dr. Brooks pressed play.

The screen flickered.

The speakers made a small sound.

Static.

Then a woman’s voice filled the ballroom.

My wife’s voice.

“Darius…”

I closed my eyes.

Ava gasped.

Everyone froze.

Then the recording continued.

“If you’re hearing this, it means Simone knows I found out.””

I opened my eyes.

And across the room, Simone covered her mouth.

Because my wife’s next words weren’t a warning.

They were an accusation.

“I know what you did.””

The recording paused for a second.

Then her voice became softer.

May you like

“Darius, there is something I need you to know before you ever trust her again…”

And then the speakers suddenly cut out.
