Chapter 5: The Key Beneath the Flowers
The key was smaller than my thumb.
A simple silver key.
Nothing about it looked important.
But the way Ava held it made it feel like it weighed a hundred pounds.
I stared at the handwriting on the tag.
My wife’s handwriting.
The same handwriting that had written love notes on my lunch bags.
The same handwriting that had signed birthday cards.
The same handwriting that had now left me a message warning me about the woman standing beside me.
“For when he doubts you.””
I read the words again.
Then I looked at Ava.
“Where did you get this?””
She swallowed.
“Mommy hid it.””
“Where?””
Ava looked toward the stage.
“The flowers.””
Everyone followed her eyes.
The giant arrangement behind the microphone.
White roses.
Baby’s breath.
Green leaves carefully arranged by professionals who had no idea they were decorating a crime scene.
Simone noticed too.
And suddenly, she moved.
Just one step.
But it was enough.
Terrence saw it.
“Don’t.””
Simone stopped.
Her face hardened.
“You’re accusing me of something without proof.””
Terrence shook his head.
“No. We’re asking questions you don’t want answered.””
I looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Neither responded.
That frightened me more.
I walked toward the stage.
The guests parted silently.
My wedding decorations surrounded me.
The place where I was supposed to promise forever had become the place where I was searching for answers about the past.
Ava followed me.
I turned.
“You should stay with Marcus.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Ava.””
“I want to help.””
I looked at my daughter.
She was seven years old.
She should have been worried about cake.
Dancing.
Taking pictures.
Not secrets.
Not betrayal.
Not protecting her father from a truth adults had hidden.
I crouched down.
“You don’t have to be brave anymore.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m not scared.””
I knew that wasn’t true.
But I also knew she had spent too long carrying this.
So I held her hand.
“Okay. Then we do it together.””
We reached the flower arrangement.
The wedding coordinator rushed over.
“Sir, those flowers were arranged this morning.””
“I know.””
“Is something wrong?””
I looked at the roses.
“Yes.””
I reached carefully between the flowers.
Nothing.
I moved another branch.
Still nothing.
Then Ava pointed.
“There.””
Behind the base of the arrangement was a small wooden box.
Almost invisible.
My heart started racing.
I pulled it out.
The room gasped.
The box was old.
Not something from a luxury wedding.
Something personal.
Something hidden.
I looked at Simone.
She was pale.
“What is that?”” she asked.
I stared at her.
“You tell me.””
She looked away.
That hurt more than if she had screamed.
I opened the box.
Inside was a folded photograph.
A small flash drive.
And another envelope.
This one was not addressed to me.
It had one name written across it.
*Simone.*
The ballroom became completely silent.
Simone’s face collapsed.
“No.””
It was the first honest emotion I had heard from her all day.
Not denial.
Not anger.
Fear.
I picked up the envelope.
“Why is your name on this?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Nobody believed her.
Not even her.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
My wife’s handwriting again.
Simone,
If Darius finds this, it means you failed to stop Ava.
My hands went cold.
Failed to stop Ava.
I continued reading.
You told me he would never believe his daughter over you.
A whisper moved through the crowd.
Someone behind me said, “Oh my God.””
I looked up.
Simone looked like she had been slapped.
“That’s not what it says,” she whispered.
I stared.
“You know what it says?””
She froze.
Another mistake.
Another crack.
I lowered the paper.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew exactly what was in this letter.””
“I didn’t.””
“Then how?””
She couldn’t answer.
Terrence stepped closer.
“Darius, there’s something you need to see.””
He picked up the photograph from the box.
His expression changed.
“What is it?””
He handed it to me.
The picture was old.
It showed my wife.
And Simone.
Together.
Not at a family event.
Not at a wedding.
Not smiling.
They were standing outside a hospital.
And my wife looked terrified.
I flipped the photo over.
On the back was a date.
A date I recognized.
The night my wife supposedly had her final medical emergency.
The night doctors told me she had collapsed unexpectedly.
The night Simone told me she was already gone before I arrived.
I looked at the picture.
Then at Simone.
“Why were you with my wife that night?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because whatever explanation she had prepared for years suddenly disappeared.
The flash drive sat inside the box.
Waiting.
Terrence looked at it.
“That’s probably the real message.””
I reached for it.
But before I could touch it, Simone whispered something.
Something so quiet almost nobody heard.
Except me.
“She wasn’t supposed to leave it for you.””
I turned slowly.
“What did you say?””
Simone covered her mouth.
Too late.
The truth had escaped.
And now everyone had heard it.
Ava stepped closer to me.
“Daddy…”
I looked at Simone.
My future wife.
The woman I thought I knew.
“What did you do?””
Simone started crying.
But before she could answer, the ballroom doors opened again.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Holding a folder.
Looking directly at me.
“I’m sorry I’m late,” she said.
Everyone turned.
She walked forward.
“My name is Dr. Elaine Brooks.””
She looked at the flash drive in my hand.
Then at Simone.
“I was your wife’s doctor.””
A chill ran through me.
May you like
She opened the folder.
“And I have the medical records that prove Simone was lying.””
