Chapter 8: The Password Only Ava Knew
The ballroom had never been quieter.
Not even during the moment before the wedding began.
Not even when Ava stepped toward the microphone.
This silence felt different.
It wasn’t shock anymore.
It was fear.
Everyone was waiting.
Waiting for a seven-year-old girl to unlock a secret her mother had left behind.
I knelt beside Ava.
“Sweetheart.””
She looked at me.
“Do you know the password?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
Her fingers tightened around mine.
“Mommy told me.””
My heart broke.
“She told you?””
Ava nodded.
“When?””
“The night before she went away.””
Nobody spoke.
I felt my throat tighten.
The night before her mother died.
Ava had been carrying this memory alone.
“What did she say?””
Ava looked toward the laptop.
“She said I had to remember something.””
“What?””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“She said love remembers.””
I closed my eyes.
That was exactly something my wife would say.
Not numbers.
Not complicated instructions.
A feeling.
A memory.
Dr. Brooks sat beside Ava.
“Can you type it?””
Ava nodded.
She walked toward the laptop.
Everyone watched as she climbed onto the chair.
Her small fingers hovered over the keyboard.
Then she typed.
One word.
The screen changed.
*ACCESS DENIED.*
Simone released a breath.
Almost like relief.
But Ava didn’t look surprised.
She tried again.
This time, three words.
The screen changed.
*ACCESS DENIED.*
I looked at her.
“Ava?””
She looked confused.
“She said love remembers.””
I crouched beside her.
“What did Mommy mean?””
Ava looked at me.
Then slowly smiled.
“She didn’t mean love.””
She looked at the wedding flowers.
“She meant our love.””
My heart stopped.
“Our?””
She nodded.
“Your anniversary.””
The room went silent.
I typed the date.
The day I met my wife.
The screen changed.
*ACCESS GRANTED.*
Nobody breathed.
The folder opened.
Inside were three files.
One audio file.
One video file.
One document.
Dr. Brooks looked at me.
“Which one?””
I stared at the screen.
The audio file was named:
*For Darius.*
The video file:
*For Ava.*
The document:
*If They Deny Everything.*
Three pieces.
Three messages.
Three final attempts from my wife to protect us.
I clicked the audio.
Her voice filled the room again.
“Darius.””
This time she sounded calmer.
Like she had accepted something.
“If you’re hearing this, I’m probably not there to explain.””
I held Ava tighter.
“But I need you to know I never wanted to hurt anyone.””
A pause.
“I know you’re going to blame yourself.””
My eyes filled.
Because she knew me.
She knew exactly what I would do.
“You’re going to ask why you didn’t see it.””
I looked down.
She was right.
“You’re going to wonder why you trusted someone who didn’t deserve it.””
The recording continued.
“But Darius, this is not about your failure.””
A tear slipped down my face.
“It’s about someone else’s choices.””
Everyone looked at Simone.
She looked away.
“My biggest mistake was believing Simone could be saved.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“She wasn’t always cruel.””
I looked up.
That sentence surprised everyone.
“My wife…”
The recording continued.
“She was once my friend.””
Simone covered her mouth.
The room shifted.
Because suddenly this wasn’t a story about a villain.
It was a story about a betrayal.
“I met Simone before she met you.””
My eyes widened.
Before me?
That made no sense.
“She came into our lives because she needed help.””
The recording paused.
“And I gave it to her.””
Simone started crying.
“I gave her a home.””
My wife’s voice became softer.
“I gave her trust.””
Another pause.
“And she gave me a reason to fear her.””
Nobody moved.
“Darius, there is something I need you to understand.””
The audio crackled.
“Simone did not plan to hurt me at first.””
I looked at Simone.
Her face was covered in tears.
“She planned to replace me.””
The room exploded with whispers.
I froze.
Replace her?
My wife continued.
“She wanted my life.””
My stomach turned.
“My family.””
A pause.
“My daughter.””
Ava stepped closer to me.
“She told me once that Ava would forget me eventually.””
Simone shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“That’s not true.””
The recording continued.
“She said children adapt.””
My hand tightened.
“She said Darius needed someone younger.””
The words cut deeper than any confession.
Simone cried harder.
“I didn’t mean it like that.””
I looked at her.
“Then how did you mean it?””
She had no answer.
The audio continued.
“But that wasn’t the worst part.””
My wife’s voice changed.
Fear entered it again.
“The worst part was what happened at the hospital.””
Dr. Brooks looked at me.
Terrence looked at me.
Everyone waited.
My wife whispered:
“Darius, Simone was there the night I died.””
The room went completely still.
Then:
“And she was not alone.””
The audio stopped.
A new message appeared on the screen.
*Video file unlocked.*
But before anyone could click it, Simone whispered something.
A name.
May you like
A name that made Terrence go pale.
Because it belonged to someone none of us expected.
