Chapter 9: The Person Behind Simone
The name hung in the air.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone was waiting for someone to explain.
But the person who looked most terrified wasn’t Simone.
It was Terrence.
I turned toward him.
“You know that name.””
He looked away.
That was enough.
“Terrence.””
He swallowed.
“I was hoping she wouldn’t be involved.””
My stomach tightened.
“She?””
Terrence closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
“Who?””
He looked at Simone.
Then at me.
Then at Ava.
And finally said:
“Your wife’s sister.””
The room erupted.
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
“My wife didn’t have a sister.””
Terrence looked at me sadly.
“Yes.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She was an only child.””
“That’s what everyone believed.””
My hands went cold.
Everyone believed.
Those words had become the theme of my entire day.
Believed.
Trusted.
Assumed.
All things I had done.
“Explain.””
Terrence looked toward the door.
Like he expected someone to appear.
“She was adopted.””
I stared.
“My wife?””
He nodded.
“She found out when she was eighteen.””
I looked at Simone.
She was crying silently.
“What does that have to do with her?””
Terrence answered slowly.
“Because Simone was her biological sister.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t process it.
No.
My brain rejected it.
Simone wasn’t a stranger.
She wasn’t just someone my wife trusted.
She was family.
My wife’s family.
The woman standing beside me wasn’t just someone who entered our lives.
She was connected to my wife before I ever met her.
I turned toward Simone.
“Is this true?””
She didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
“Ava,” I whispered.
She looked confused.
“Mommy had a sister?””
I pulled her close.
“I don’t know.””
But now I knew one thing.
I had known Simone for years.
And I had never known the truth.
Dr. Brooks stepped forward.
“The video may explain everything.””
She clicked the file.
The screen flickered.
A video appeared.
My wife was sitting in a hospital room.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My breath caught.
I had never seen this.
She looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, then Darius already knows about Simone.””
A small smile appeared.
A sad one.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
I couldn’t look away.
My wife continued.
“Simone and I share the same mother.””
Everyone stared.
“She found me when she was struggling.””
The video showed my wife holding another woman’s hand.
Simone.
Younger.
Crying.
“I wanted to believe we could build something together.””
My wife’s expression changed.
“But family does not always mean safety.””
Simone closed her eyes.
“I tried to help her.””
My wife continued.
“I paid her debts.””
A pause.
“I gave her a place to live.””
Another pause.
“And then I realized she wasn’t trying to rebuild her life.””
The screen showed my wife looking down.
“She was trying to take mine.””
I looked at Simone.
She was shaking.
“She became obsessed with what I had.””
The video paused briefly.
“My husband.””
My heart sank.
“My daughter.””
Ava held my hand.
“My family.””
My wife looked directly into the camera.
“And when I told her I needed distance…”
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“She threatened to tell Darius I was unstable.””
A whisper moved through the ballroom.
“She said nobody would believe a dying woman.””
I felt sick.
Because I remembered.
The doctors.
The confusion.
The conversations where Simone gently told me my wife was scared.
My wife was confused.
My wife didn’t know what she was saying.
How many of those things had been true?
How many had been planted?
The video continued.
“But there is one thing Simone doesn’t know.””
My wife leaned closer.
“I wasn’t as sick as she thought.””
The room froze.
Dr. Brooks looked down.
Terrence covered his face.
My heart stopped.
“What?””
My wife smiled sadly.
“I discovered the medication changes.””
Simone suddenly stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
My wife’s voice continued.
“She had been replacing my prescriptions.””
The world went silent.
“She wasn’t trying to scare me.””
A pause.
“She was trying to make everyone believe I was already disappearing.””
Simone broke.
“No…”
I looked at her.
And for the first time, I saw the truth.
Not a misunderstanding.
Not a secret.
A plan.
My wife’s final words played through the speakers.
“Darius, if Simone is standing beside you when you see this…”
The video glitched.
Her face froze.
Then her voice returned.
“Run.””
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
A police officer stepped inside.
Everyone turned.
He looked directly at Simone.
“Simone Carter?””
She froze.
“Yes?””
He walked forward holding a file.
“I’m sorry to interrupt.””
His eyes moved toward me.
“We need to ask you some questions about the death of Elena Carter.””
Simone’s face went completely white.
May you like
And then the officer said the one thing nobody expected.
“Because new evidence suggests she may not have died from natural causes.””
