Chapter 10: The Message My Father Left Behind

The room felt smaller after my mother spoke.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

My father had been dead for twenty years.

Yet somehow, he had left a message.

Not for me.

For Lily.

I looked down at the memory card in my hand.

A tiny piece of plastic carrying the truth my entire family had spent decades burying.

Marcus lowered the gun slightly.

“Play it.””

I looked at him.

“You knew about this?””

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

My mother stepped forward.

“Darius, please.””

I stared at her.

“Please what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Don’t make the same mistake I made.””

The words hit me.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Lily.

“Your father wanted to protect her.””

“From who?””

Silence.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“From us.””

My chest tightened.

The person who raised me.

The woman who taught me right from wrong.

She was admitting she was part of the danger.

I inserted the memory card into my laptop.

Everyone gathered around.

The screen flickered.

Static.

Then a face appeared.

My father.

James Carter.

Younger.

Healthy.

Alive.

My knees almost gave out.

I had spent years trying to remember his voice.

Now it filled the room again.

“Darius…”

The recording was shaky, like it had been made in a hurry.

“If you’re watching this, something went wrong.””

My hands curled into fists.

My father looked directly into the camera.

“First, I need you to know something.””

He paused.

“I loved you.””

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

I looked away.

The room disappeared.

For a moment, I was six years old again.

Waiting by the window for him to come home.

Waiting for a man who never returned.

The video continued.

“Darius, your mother will tell you she did what she had to do.””

My eyes moved toward Evelyn.

“She’ll say she was protecting the family.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“But the truth is, she was protecting a secret.””

Marcus watched silently.

My father continued.

“The night of the fire, I discovered Marcus was stealing money from the foundation.””

I looked at my uncle.

“But he wasn’t working alone.””

A chill moved through me.

My father leaned closer to the camera.

“He had help.””

The video glitched.

Then returned.

“I found records. Names. Payments.””

My father looked terrified.

Not scared.

Terrified.

“And one of those names was Evelyn Carter.””

My mother covered her mouth.

I stared at her.

“No.””

The recording continued.

“I wanted to believe she was being forced.””

My father shook his head.

“But I found proof.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“You never told him.””

My mother said nothing.

I felt like the ground had disappeared.

My father’s voice continued.

“Darius, if you are seeing this, then Lily is alive.””

My heart stopped.

He knew.

He knew about her.

“She is the reason I recorded this.””

The image shook.

“I found out Marcus planned to use children as leverage against anyone who threatened him.””

I looked at Lily.

My daughter stared at the screen.

“Lily was never an accident.””

My breathing stopped.

“She was chosen.””

The room went silent.

“Chosen for what?””

I whispered.

The recording continued.

“She was the child who could expose everything.””

Marcus suddenly stepped forward.

“Turn it off.””

I ignored him.

My father kept speaking.

“Darius, there is something you need to understand.””

His eyes became softer.

“Family isn’t always blood.””

I looked at Lily.

“She is yours because you chose her.””

The words broke something inside me.

Because for one terrifying moment, I had wondered.

Not whether I loved her.

Never that.

But whether the truth could take her away.

My father’s final words came.

“Protect her from anyone who tells you she doesn’t belong.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus laughed.

Quietly.

Almost sadly.

“That’s it?””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“That’s all he left you?””

“You expected something else?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Your father was always too emotional.””

My anger rose.

“You killed him.””

His expression changed.

“No.””

“Then why did he die?””

Marcus looked away.

“Because he chose the wrong people.””

My mother suddenly stepped forward.

“Darius…”

I turned.

She was crying.

“I need to tell you something else.””

I didn’t want to hear another secret.

But I knew I had to.

“What?””

She looked at Lily.

Then at Amara.

Then Naomi.

“I wasn’t working with Marcus.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus laughed.

“Don’t lie now.””

My mother ignored him.

“I was trying to stop him.””

“Then why did Dad accuse you?””

“Because I made a deal.””

“With who?””

Her voice became a whisper.

“With Clara.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because after the fire, I realized Marcus would never stop.””

She looked at Lily.

“So I hid the one thing he wanted most.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

My mother looked at me.

“The proof.””

“What proof?””

She reached into her pocket.

And pulled out a small envelope.

My father’s handwriting was on the front.

Darius.

I stared.

“Where did you get that?””

My mother’s hands shook.

“Your father gave it to me the night he disappeared.””

I took a step closer.

“You had this for twenty years?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at Lily.

“Because the letter wasn’t meant to be opened until she was old enough.””

I froze.

“Until who was old enough?””

My mother handed it to me.

The envelope felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“Until Lily could read what her real mother wrote.””
