Chapter 6: The Daughter Nobody Remembered
My mother’s confession destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.
Not because she had secrets.
Every family has secrets.
But because she had built an entire life around hiding them.
Including mine.
“Explain.””
My voice was barely controlled.
Evelyn sat down.
Her hands shook.
“I never wanted you involved.””
“That stopped being your choice when my daughter became part of this.””
She looked at Lily’s photograph on the phone.
“I know.””
“Then talk.””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Finally, my mother whispered:
“Before you were born, I had another child.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What?””
Clara looked down.
Like she already knew.
“You had a daughter?””
My mother nodded.
“A baby girl.””
I felt dizzy.
“Where is she?””
My mother’s eyes filled with pain.
“She disappeared.””
Another missing child.
Another family secret.
Another lie.
“When?””
“Thirty years ago.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“How do I not know this?””
“Because I erased it.””
The honesty shocked me.
“You erased your own child?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I erased the evidence.””
The words hung in the air.
Marcus the detective stepped forward.
“Evelyn, you need to tell us everything.””
My mother looked exhausted.
“Her name was Naomi.””
Clara suddenly looked up.
“Naomi?””
My mother nodded.
“You knew her?””
Clara’s face changed.
“I knew that name.””
My heart raced.
“How?””
Clara walked slowly toward us.
“Because Amara had a sister.””
Nobody breathed.
“You’re saying Naomi was Clara’s daughter too?””
Clara shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at my mother.
“She was Evelyn’s.””
The room became chaos.
My mother covered her face.
“I was young.””
I stared at her.
“You had a daughter before me?””
“Yes.””
“And she disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“Because of who?””
My mother looked toward the window.
“The same person who took Amara.””
My stomach dropped.
“Uncle Marcus.””
She nodded.
I felt anger burning through me.
The man I trusted.
The man who had smiled in family photos.
The man who had been part of every memory.
“He’s been doing this for decades.””
Clara nodded.
“He didn’t just steal money.””
“What did he do?””
My mother whispered:
“He collected secrets.””
The phrase sounded insane.
But after everything I had learned, nothing felt impossible.
“He used people’s mistakes against them.””
Clara added:
“He knew every weakness in this family.””
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
Everyone stared.
I opened it.
A video.
I pressed play.
The screen showed a dark room.
Lily was sitting on the floor.
Beside her was the other girl.
Amara.
Both were crying.
Then a man stepped into view.
Older.
Gray hair.
A familiar face.
Uncle Marcus.
He smiled at the camera.
“Hello, Darius.””
I felt sick.
He looked directly at me.
“I know you’re angry.””
I said nothing.
“But you need to understand something.””
He leaned closer.
“Your mother isn’t the victim in this story.””
The video paused.
Then continued.
A second person entered the room.
A woman.
Older.
Wearing a red scarf.
Clara gasped.
“That’s not possible.””
I looked at her.
“Who is she?””
Clara’s face lost all color.
“She’s supposed to be dead.””
The woman in the video stepped closer to Lily.
And whispered something into her ear.
Lily looked up.
Her face changed.
Then she stared directly into the camera.
“Daddy…”
My heart broke.
She whispered:
“She’s not who you think.””
The video cut off.
On the screen appeared one final message.
*Come alone, Darius. Or you’ll never know which daughter belongs to you.*
I looked at my mother.
Then Clara.
Then the frozen image of Lily.
And I realized the worst part.
May you like
I wasn’t just searching for my daughter anymore.
I was searching for the truth about whether she had ever been mine at all.
