Chapter 12: The Daughter in the Photograph

The photograph changed everything.

Again.

I hated that word.

Again.

Every time I thought I had reached the truth, another door opened.

Another secret waited behind it.

I stared at the image.

A young girl.

Maybe ten years old.

Standing beside someone I recognized.

Evelyn.

My mother.

But the expression on my mother’s face was different.

She wasn’t scared.

She wasn’t hiding.

She was smiling.

Like she knew this child.

“Who is she?””

My voice was quiet.

Nobody answered.

I looked at my mother.

She couldn’t meet my eyes.

“Mom.””

Nothing.

“Who is the girl?””

Her lips trembled.

“I thought she was gone.””

The words made my stomach drop.

“Another daughter?””

She sat down.

Slowly.

Like her legs couldn’t hold her.

“Yes.””

The room erupted.

“No,” Clara whispered.

Naomi stepped back.

“How many secrets did you bury?””

My mother covered her face.

“I was trying to protect them.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Who is she?””

My mother whispered:

“Sophia.””

The name meant nothing.

But everyone else reacted.

Clara looked shocked.

Naomi looked afraid.

Amara looked confused.

“Who is Sophia?””

Naomi answered.

“She was the first child Marcus took.””

I stared.

“The first?””

She nodded.

“Before me. Before Amara.””

My chest tightened.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

My mother looked at me.

“Because I thought knowing would put you in danger.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””

She lowered her eyes.

I walked closer.

“Where is Sophia now?””

My mother didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

“Where?””

Her voice broke.

“I don’t know.””

I stared.

“You have a picture.””

“Yes.””

“Then where did you get it?””

She looked toward the window.

“Three months ago.””

“From who?””

A long pause.

Then:

“From Marcus.””

Everyone froze.

“He sent it to me.””

“Why?””

My mother’s hands shook.

“To remind me.””

“Of what?””

“That he was still watching.””

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

Everyone looked.

The same unknown number.

A video.

I pressed play.

The screen showed Sophia.

She was older now.

Sitting in a room.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Darius Carter?””

I froze.

She knew my name.

“I don’t know if you’re going to believe me.””

Her voice trembled.

“But your mother isn’t the only person who lied.””

My mother stood.

“No.””

The video continued.

“Sophia was never taken by Marcus.””

I looked at my mother.

“What?””

The girl on screen continued.

“She was given away.””

My mother started crying.

“No.””

The video showed Sophia looking down.

“I spent my whole life thinking nobody wanted me.””

Her voice cracked.

“Then I found the documents.””

A pause.

“Your mother signed them.””

The room went silent.

I turned toward Evelyn.

“What documents?””

She couldn’t answer.

“What documents?””

My mother whispered:

“Adoption papers.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

“You gave away your daughter?””

“No.””

She shook her head desperately.

“I saved her.””

“From what?””

My mother looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“From the same person who is trying to destroy us now.””

The video continued.

Sophia looked terrified.

“Darius, if you’re watching this, you need to know something.””

She leaned closer.

“Marcus wasn’t the person controlling everything.””

My blood ran cold.

“Then who was?””

The video froze.

A loading circle appeared.

Everyone waited.

Then the screen returned.

Sophia whispered:

“The person who started it all…”

A shadow moved behind her.

She looked over her shoulder.

Her face changed.

Fear.

Pure fear.

Then she whispered one final sentence.

“Your grandmother.””

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

My mother slowly looked up.

“My mother?””

I stared at her.

“Your mother’s mother.””

The family name.

The legacy.

The secrets.

Suddenly, everything was bigger than I imagined.

Because the person who started this wasn’t someone who betrayed the family.

It was the person who built it.

And then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

This time, I answered.

A woman’s voice came through.

Old.

Calm.

Certain.

“Darius.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

A quiet laugh.

“You’ve spent your whole life looking for monsters.””

The voice lowered.

“But you never looked at the woman who raised you.””

I looked at Evelyn.

The woman who had loved me.

The woman who had lied to me.

The voice continued:

“Ask your mother why she never told you about the night she killed her own sister.””

The call ended.

And for the first time…

May you like

I wondered if my mother had been hiding the truth.

Or hiding from it.
