Chapter 8: The Sister I Never Knew
The name echoed through the abandoned house.
Naomi.
My mother’s lost daughter.
The child nobody remembered.
The child whose existence had been erased.
I stared at the woman standing in front of me.
“You’re alive.””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
My mind couldn’t accept it.
Thirty years.
A person missing for thirty years was standing ten feet away from me.
“You were the voice upstairs.””
Naomi looked down.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her expression broke.
“Because I needed you to know the truth before they convinced you otherwise.””
“Who?””
She looked past me.
Toward the basement.
“Everyone.””
I stepped closer.
“Where is Lily?””
Naomi’s eyes softened.
“She’s safe.””
“Where?””
“I’ll take you to her.””
I moved immediately.
Then stopped.
Because something bothered me.
“You knew who I was.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Naomi looked at me sadly.
“Because I watched you grow up.””
The words felt like a punch.
“What?””
“I was there.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
She swallowed.
“Your mother kept me hidden.””
I felt anger rise.
“My mother knew you were alive?””
Naomi nodded.
“She knew.””
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Naomi looked at the walls.
“Of what I remembered.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“What do you remember?””
Naomi took a deep breath.
“The night of the fire.””
I stared at her.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
She closed her eyes.
“I was eight years old.””
Her voice became quieter.
“Your uncle Marcus discovered the money theft. But he wasn’t the one stealing.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was trying to expose someone else.””
My confusion grew.
“Then why did everyone blame him?””
“Because your mother made sure they did.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
Naomi looked at me.
“You want to believe she was protecting everyone.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I did.
“She wasn’t.””
My phone buzzed.
A message from Marcus.
*Don’t trust her. She’s using you.*
I looked at Naomi.
She saw the message.
A sad smile appeared.
“Of course he said that.””
“You expect me to believe you without proof?””
“No.””
She reached into her coat.
And handed me a small box.
I opened it.
Inside was a necklace.
A tiny silver pendant.
The Carter family crest.
My mother’s crest.
The same one from the red cloth.
“I had this the night of the fire.””
I stared.
“Where did you get it?””
“Your father gave it to me.””
My heart stopped.
“My father?””
Naomi nodded.
“He knew about everything.””
I shook my head.
“My father died when I was young.””
“Yes.””
“Then how could he—”
“Because he left evidence.””
She pointed toward the box.
“There’s a hidden compartment.””
My fingers searched the pendant.
A small piece opened.
Inside was a tiny memory card.
I stared at it.
“What is this?””
“The truth your mother never wanted you to find.””
Before I could respond, a scream came from upstairs.
Lily.
I ran.
This time Naomi followed.
We reached the second floor.
A bedroom door was open.
Inside, Lily sat on the bed.
Alive.
Crying.
I rushed to her.
“Baby!””
She grabbed me tightly.
“I knew you would come.””
I held her.
“I’m never leaving you again.””
Then I noticed something.
Someone else was in the room.
A second girl.
A teenager.
Maybe seventeen.
She stood by the window.
Watching me.
My heart stopped.
Because she looked exactly like the baby in the old photograph.
“Amara?””
The girl said nothing.
Lily looked between us.
“Daddy…”
I turned.
“What?””
She pointed at the girl.
“She told me something.””
The teenager looked terrified.
“What did she say?””
Lily whispered:
“She said Grandma didn’t lose her daughter.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
The girl stepped forward.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“She gave me away.””
Nobody moved.
I stared at her.
“Who are you?””
The girl swallowed.
“My name is Amara.””
The room went silent.
Then she looked at Naomi.
And whispered:
“You found him.””
Naomi started crying.
Not because she was surprised.
Because she had been waiting thirty years.
I looked at both girls.
Two missing daughters.
Two impossible stories.
One family.
And then Amara said the words that changed everything.
“Darius…”
She looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
“Lily isn’t the child they took.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you saying?””
May you like
Amara’s voice shook.
“She’s the child they replaced.””
