Chapter 11: The Letter From a Stranger

Nobody spoke after my mother handed me the envelope.

The paper was old.

Yellowed.

Fragile.

My father’s handwriting covered the front.

But those words weren’t meant for me.

They were meant for my daughter.

A daughter who had spent the last few days discovering that the world around her was built on secrets.

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting quietly beside Amara.

Six years old.

Too young to carry any of this.

Too young to understand why adults kept whispering her name like it was dangerous.

I crouched beside her.

“Baby.””

She looked at me.

“Are you leaving?””

The question broke me.

“No.””

I held her hand.

“Never.””

She nodded slowly.

Then she looked at the envelope.

“Is that about me?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Is it bad?””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I meant it.

“No matter what it says, nothing changes.””

She squeezed my fingers.

“Okay.””

I stood.

And opened the letter.

Inside was a single page.

The handwriting wasn’t my father’s.

It belonged to a woman.

A woman I had never met.

The top of the letter read:

*Dear Lily,*

My heart stopped.

I began reading.

If you are holding this letter, then somehow you survived.

I looked at Clara.

Her face changed.

Because she recognized the words.

I wish I could have been there to watch you grow. I wish I knew your favorite color. I wish I knew what made you laugh.

My hands shook.

This wasn’t a letter from a stranger.

This was from Lily’s biological mother.

But I need you to know something. You were never abandoned.

I looked at Lily.

She was watching my face.

The people who took you wanted you to believe you were unwanted. They wanted you to feel like nobody was looking for you.

A tear slipped down my cheek.

That was the lie.

I continued.

Your father searched for you every day.

My breath caught.

My father.

Darius promised me he would protect you.

I looked up.

Everyone was silent.

Even Marcus.

He told me something I will never forget. He said a child doesn’t become family because of blood. A child becomes family because someone chooses to love them.

I stopped reading.

The same words my father had spoken in the video.

A chill moved through me.

The letter continued.

I made one mistake. I trusted the wrong people.

My eyes moved to the next line.

But I know one thing.

If Darius is raising you, you are safe.

I closed my eyes.

Because suddenly I understood.

My father had known.

He had chosen me to protect her.

The letter ended with four words.

Love her for me.

I lowered the page.

Lily looked up.

“Did she love me?””

I knelt beside her.

“Yes.””

“Then why did she leave?””

I looked at Clara.

At Naomi.

At Amara.

At my mother.

Because the truth was complicated.

But Lily deserved the truth.

“She didn’t leave you.””

Lily’s eyes filled.

“She didn’t?””

“No.””

I held her hand.

“She spent years trying to find you.””

For the first time since she returned, Lily smiled.

A tiny smile.

But real.

Then a loud crash came from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

Marcus moved first.

Too fast.

He ran toward the hallway.

I noticed immediately.

“Why are you running?””

He stopped.

A second too late.

Detective Marcus Hill grabbed him.

“Don’t move.””

My uncle looked furious.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

The detective tightened his grip.

“Actually, I do.””

Marcus looked at him.

“How?””

Detective Hill pulled out his phone.

“We found the hidden files.””

My heart raced.

“What files?””

The detective looked at me.

“Everything.””

Marcus’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“Darius, listen to me.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

He looked toward Lily.

Then said something that froze everyone.

“She isn’t the only child who survived.””

Silence.

I stared.

“What?””

Marcus smiled sadly.

“There’s another one.””

My mother’s face went white.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You thought you buried the past.””

He turned toward me.

“But the past has been waiting for you.””

The detective pulled him away.

As Marcus disappeared down the hallway, my phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

A child.

Older than Lily.

Standing beside a familiar woman.

My hands shook.

May you like

Because beneath the picture were six words.

*She knows who your mother really is.*
