Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Envelope
“Because you don’t know who that child really is…”
Vanessa’s words hung in the air like smoke.
Nobody moved.
Nobody even pretended to.
The guests who had been whispering moments earlier were now silent, watching the four of us standing beneath the massive chandelier.
Nathaniel held the envelope tightly in his hand.
His face was impossible to read.
That was the thing about Nathaniel Cross.
He was a man who had built an empire by controlling every emotion that crossed his face.
Anger.
Fear.
Surprise.
He buried everything.
But I had worked in his home long enough to notice small things.
The way his fingers tightened around the envelope.
The way his eyes kept returning to Lily.
The way his breathing changed.
Something inside him had just cracked.
“What are you saying?”” Nathaniel asked.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Vanessa looked around the room.
Only now did she seem to realize how many people had heard her.
She lowered her voice.
“Nathaniel, we need to talk privately.””
“No.””
The single word stopped her.
Her eyes widened.
“What?””
“You brought a confidential DNA report into my house. You accused my employee’s daughter of stealing. And now you’re telling me I don’t know who she is.””
His gaze hardened.
“I think everyone here deserves to hear what you mean.””
Vanessa’s perfect expression slipped.
Just for a moment.
Then she recovered.
“Nathaniel, you’re misunderstanding.””
“I asked you a question.””
The room became painfully quiet.
I pulled Lily closer.
She was still holding onto my dress.
Her tiny fingers were trembling.
“Mommy,” she whispered.
I looked down.
“Yes, baby?””
“Are we in trouble?””
That question hurt more than anything Vanessa had said.
Because Lily didn’t ask if Vanessa was lying.
She didn’t ask why there was a test with her name.
She asked if we were in trouble.
Like children of people like us were always waiting for punishment.
I knelt beside her.
“No, sweetheart.””
I touched her cheek.
“You didn’t do anything wrong.””
Nathaniel heard me.
His eyes moved toward Lily.
Something softened in his expression.
Then Vanessa stepped between them.
“You’re letting your emotions control you.””
Nathaniel looked at her.
“My emotions?””
“Yes.””
She forced a small smile.
“You’re shocked. That’s understandable. But this is exactly why I kept the information from you.””
My stomach tightened.
“You kept it from him?””
Vanessa glanced at me.
Her old arrogance returned.
“This doesn’t involve you.””
I stood slowly.
“It has my daughter’s name on it.””
Nathaniel looked down at the envelope again.
Then he carefully opened it.
Vanessa immediately reached for his arm.
“Nathaniel, please.””
He pulled away.
“Don’t touch me.””
Those three words changed everything.
Because everyone in the room understood.
Nathaniel Cross had never spoken to Vanessa that way before.
Not publicly.
Not ever.
The pages inside the envelope slid out.
He read the first line.
Then the second.
His face changed.
I wanted to know what he saw.
I needed to know.
But a strange fear stopped me.
Because whatever was written on those pages involved my daughter.
And somehow, Vanessa had known about it.
For months.
Nathaniel turned the page.
“Date of collection…” he whispered.
Then he looked up.
“Three months ago?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Three months ago, you ordered a DNA test on Lily?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then explain what it was like.””
Her jaw tightened.
“I was protecting you.””
A nervous laugh came from somewhere behind us.
Someone whispered.
But Nathaniel ignored everyone.
“Protecting me from what?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then back at him.
“From making a mistake.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“A mistake?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Emma has been working around you for years. You’ve trusted her. You’ve protected her. You’ve given her opportunities.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“But you never asked the most important question.””
Nathaniel’s expression darkened.
“What question?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Who is Lily’s father?””
My heart stopped.
Lily looked up at me.
She didn’t understand.
But I did.
I understood exactly what Vanessa was doing.
She wasn’t just trying to hurt me.
She was trying to destroy everything.
“Don’t do this,” I said quietly.
Vanessa smiled.
A cruel, satisfied smile.
“Why? Because the truth is uncomfortable?””
“You don’t know anything about my life.””
“I know enough.””
Nathaniel looked at me.
And that hurt more than I expected.
Not because he looked angry.
Because he looked confused.
For years, I had worked in his home.
I had cleaned rooms.
Prepared meals.
Taken care of things people never noticed.
I had always kept my personal life separate.
Not because I was ashamed.
Because I had learned that wealthy people liked boundaries.
They liked employees who were invisible.
“Emma,” Nathaniel said softly.
I swallowed.
“Yes?””
“Is there something I need to know?””
Every eye in that room was on me.
I could feel the judgment.
The curiosity.
The excitement people had when someone else’s life began falling apart.
I looked at Lily.
Her little face was filled with fear.
I knew then.
Whatever happened next, I couldn’t let her carry it.
I turned back to Nathaniel.
“My daughter is not a secret.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“That’s not an answer.””
I ignored her.
“I have raised Lily by myself since she was born.””
Nathaniel listened carefully.
“And her father?””
I opened my mouth.
Then stopped.
Because the truth was complicated.
More complicated than anyone in that room knew.
“I don’t know where he is.””
Vanessa immediately smiled.
“There.””
Nathaniel looked at her.
“What?””
“That’s why I tested her.””
She stepped closer.
“Because I suspected something was wrong.””
“With what?””
“With the timing.””
The word landed heavily.
Nathaniel looked at me.
“What timing?””
I felt my chest tighten.
Because I knew exactly what Vanessa was trying to suggest.
Before I could answer, she did.
“The night Lily was conceived.””
The room exploded into whispers.
I felt my face burn.
“Stop.””
My voice shook.
But Vanessa continued.
“You were traveling for business around that time, Nathaniel.””
His eyes narrowed.
“So?””
“So Emma was already working here.””
My hands curled into fists.
She was trying to create a story.
A horrible story.
A story that would make people question me without evidence.
Nathaniel looked at her.
“Are you accusing Emma of something?””
“I’m saying you should know the truth.””
“No.””
His voice was sharper.
“You’re avoiding the truth.””
Vanessa froze.
Nathaniel held up the DNA report.
“You tested a four-year-old child without permission.””
Nobody spoke.
“You hid the results from me.””
He looked at the red folder.
“You kept months of reports.””
Then he looked directly at her.
“And you brought this to my home tonight.””
Vanessa’s confidence started disappearing.
“Nathaniel…”
“Why tonight?””
That question seemed to hit her harder than anything else.
Because she knew.
She knew exactly why.
I watched her eyes flick toward the cameras near the entrance.
Then toward the guests.
Then back to Nathaniel.
She was calculating.
Always calculating.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She hesitated.
“After our engagement announcement.””
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“So you were going to announce our engagement while hiding this?””
“It was complicated.””
“No.””
His voice dropped.
“It was intentional.””
The room fell silent again.
Vanessa looked hurt.
But I didn’t believe it.
I had seen her cruelty too clearly.
“Nathaniel, you’re choosing her over me?””
He stared at her.
“This isn’t about choosing sides.””
Then his eyes moved to Lily.
“This is about a child.””
For the first time all night, Vanessa looked genuinely angry.
“She isn’t your child.””
Nobody expected her to say it.
Not even her.
The words came out too quickly.
Too honestly.
Nathaniel went still.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa realized her mistake.
Her lips parted.
“I mean…”
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“You said she isn’t my child.””
She looked away.
And that was enough.
Because a person who had nothing to hide would have answered immediately.
I felt dizzy.
My entire world had become a room full of strangers.
A DNA test.
A billionaire.
A woman who hated my daughter.
Nathaniel looked back at me.
“Emma.””
I met his eyes.
“I need you to tell me something.””
My throat tightened.
“What?””
He glanced down at Lily.
Then at the report.
“Is there any possibility…”
He paused.
Like he was afraid to finish.
“Any possibility that Lily is my daughter?””
The question shattered the room.
Lily looked up at him.
I looked at the man standing in front of me.
The man who had unknowingly been part of a secret for four years.
And before I could answer, a voice came from the doorway.
“Emma?””
Everyone turned.
An older man in a security uniform stood there, holding a second red folder.
His face was pale.
“I’m sorry to interrupt, Mr. Cross.””
Nathaniel looked at him.
“What is it?””
The security officer swallowed.
“I found this hidden in the private office.””
Nathaniel stared at the folder.
“Who put it there?””
The man looked directly at Vanessa.
Then he said the one thing that made her lose all color from her face.
“Your name is on it, Ms. Cross.””
Vanessa took one step backward.
May you like
And for the first time that night…
she looked terrified.
