Chapter 9: The Mother Who Never Left
Nathaniel read the sentence three times.
I could see it happening.
The moment his mind tried to reject what his eyes were seeing.
The moment he searched for another explanation.
A mistake.
A misunderstanding.
A name that belonged to someone else.
Anything.
But there was no escape.
The envelope was real.
The handwriting was real.
And the impossible name was right there.
Eleanor Cross.
His mother.
A woman everyone believed had died six years earlier.
Nathaniel slowly looked up at Rebecca.
“Explain.””
His voice was barely controlled.
Rebecca looked like she had been carrying this moment for years.
“I wish I could tell you I knew everything.””
“You knew enough.””
“Yes.””
“And you stayed silent.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
Most people would have defended themselves.
She didn’t.
Nathaniel looked at the envelope.
“My mother is alive?””
Rebecca nodded.
The room became silent.
Even Vanessa looked shocked.
“You knew?”” Nathaniel asked her.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
But her answer came too quickly.
Nathaniel noticed.
“You knew something.””
She looked away.
“I knew your mother wasn’t as innocent as everyone believed.””
My stomach tightened.
Nathaniel stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Your mother was involved from the beginning.””
“Beginning of what?””
She looked at Lily’s room.
“The plan.””
Nobody spoke.
Nathaniel’s hands curled into fists.
“What plan?””
Rebecca answered quietly.
“The plan to control the Cross legacy.””
I felt a chill.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The DNA test.
The altered records.
The missing birth certificate.
The lies.
They weren’t random.
They were pieces of something planned.
Rebecca sat down slowly.
“I was a nurse at St. Mary’s for twenty-seven years.””
She looked at me.
“When Lily was born, I was assigned to your room.””
I nodded.
“I remember you.””
Her eyes softened.
“You were terrified.””
I looked down.
“I was alone.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You were made to feel alone.””
The words hurt because they were true.
Rebecca continued.
“After Lily was born, everything was normal.””
She paused.
“Until Eleanor Cross arrived.””
Nathaniel’s face changed.
“My mother came to the hospital?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rebecca looked at the envelope.
“Because she knew about the baby.””
Nathaniel closed his eyes briefly.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
Rebecca sighed.
“But she wasn’t surprised. That was what scared me.””
She looked at me.
“She walked into your room like she had been expecting Lily.””
My skin went cold.
“What did she say?””
Rebecca hesitated.
Then:
“She said, ‘The child belongs to the family.’”
Nathaniel’s expression darkened.
“What family?””
“The Cross family.””
A bitter silence followed.
Rebecca continued.
“She didn’t look at Lily like a grandmother.””
Her voice shook.
“She looked at her like property.””
Nathaniel looked away.
I saw pain in his face.
Because whatever his mother had done…
she was still his mother.
And that was a wound no one else could understand.
“What happened next?”” he asked.
Rebecca took a breath.
“She argued with Emma.””
I looked up.
“With me?””
“Yes.””
I frowned.
“I don’t remember.””
“You wouldn’t.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Because someone gave you medication.””
The room froze.
“What?””
Rebecca nodded.
“You were exhausted after delivery. Someone requested something to help you sleep.””
My face went pale.
“Who?””
Rebecca looked at Vanessa.
Then away.
“I never saw who gave the order.””
Nathaniel immediately turned.
“Vanessa?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Rebecca continued.
“But I saw Eleanor.””
Everyone stopped.
“She was standing outside the room when Emma fell asleep.””
My heart pounded.
Rebecca’s voice became quieter.
“When Emma woke up, she was gone.””
Nathaniel stared.
“Who was gone?””
“The baby.””
The word hit harder than anything.
I gripped the edge of the table.
“No.””
Rebecca looked at me.
“You searched everywhere.””
I nodded slowly.
“I remember.””
I remembered screaming.
I remembered nurses running.
I remembered someone telling me to calm down.
I remembered feeling like the world had ended.
But Rebecca knew something I didn’t.
“You found Lily two rooms away.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“She had been moved.””
Nathaniel stepped forward.
“Moved by who?””
Rebecca looked at the envelope.
“Eleanor.””
The room went silent.
“She was trying to take Lily out of the hospital.””
My breath caught.
“But why?””
Rebecca looked at Nathaniel.
“Because your father had a plan.””
“What plan?””
“To announce Lily as the future heir.””
Nathaniel stared.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does if you understand how your father thought.””
Rebecca’s voice became firm.
“He believed a child with your blood would secure the company.””
Nathaniel shook his head.
“He could have told me.””
“No.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“He believed you would refuse.””
Because he knew his son.
Because he knew Nathaniel would choose a child’s happiness over a company’s power.
The irony was painful.
The thing his father feared was the thing that made him a better man.
“So why hide Lily?”” I asked.
Rebecca looked at me.
“Because your father wanted control.””
The room went quiet.
“He didn’t want you raising her.””
My chest tightened.
“He wanted the Cross family raising her.””
Nathaniel looked sick.
“My father wanted to take my daughter.””
“Yes.””
“And my mother helped him.””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
A long silence followed.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“So why am I blamed?””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked exhausted.
“I made mistakes.””
Nathaniel stared.
“You lied.””
“Yes.””
“You manipulated Emma.””
“Yes.””
“You hid the DNA test.””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“But I wasn’t the person who started this.””
For the first time, I believed her.
Not because I trusted her.
But because the story was bigger than her.
Rebecca reached into her bag again.
“There is one more thing.””
Nathaniel looked at her.
“What?””
She pulled out a small flash drive.
“I found this in the hospital archive.””
“What is it?””
“Security footage.””
Nathaniel’s eyes narrowed.
“From the night Lily was born?””
Rebecca nodded.
“It was supposed to be destroyed.””
My heart raced.
“Why wasn’t it?””
“Because someone forgot one copy existed.””
Nathaniel took it.
“Who?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Your mother.””
The room went quiet.
“She kept evidence against herself?””
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.””
She looked terrified.
“She kept evidence against someone else.””
Nathaniel inserted the flash drive into the laptop.
The screen flickered.
A grainy hospital hallway appeared.
The timestamp showed four years earlier.
The night Lily was born.
Everyone leaned closer.
A woman walked down the hallway.
Holding a baby.
My heart stopped.
Even though the image was unclear.
I knew that posture.
That walk.
Nathaniel whispered:
“My mother.””
The footage continued.
Eleanor entered a private room.
A few minutes later, another person appeared.
Nathaniel moved closer.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
The figure turned slightly.
Enough for the face to become visible.
I felt my blood freeze.
Because it wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Eleanor.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been close to the Cross family for years.
Someone Nathaniel trusted.
Nathaniel stepped back.
“No.””
The person on the screen looked directly at the camera.
And then the video stopped.
Rebecca whispered:
“That person is the reason Lily was hidden.””
Nathaniel stared at the frozen image.
“Who?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“The person who has been running your company from the shadows.””
Nathaniel’s voice was almost silent.
“Who?””
Rebecca answered:
“Your father’s closest advisor.””
A pause.
“The man who became your mentor after your father died.””
Nathaniel’s face turned pale.
Because he knew exactly who she meant.
The man who had helped him build his empire.
The man who had guided every major decision.
The man who had always called himself family.
Nathaniel whispered his name.
And when he did…
Vanessa covered her mouth.
May you like
Because she knew him too.
“Marcus Vale.””
