Chapter 7: The Nurse Who Kept the Last Secret
The name hung in the air.
Vanessa Cross.
For the second time that night, everyone heard it.
Not whispered.
Not suggested.
Written.
Recorded.
A fact.
Vanessa stood completely still.
Her face had lost every trace of the confidence she once carried.
The woman who had walked through the gala like she owned the entire world now looked like someone watching a door close.
Nathaniel stared at her.
“I want to understand something.””
His voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
“You were at the hospital the night Lily was born.””
Vanessa said nothing.
“You signed a birth document.””
Silence.
“You made a phone call that convinced Emma I didn’t want my own child.””
Still nothing.
“And now there’s an incident report saying a nurse saw you trying to take Lily.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“You’re making me sound like a monster.””
Nathaniel looked at her.
“I’m asking you what happened.””
She laughed softly.
But there was no humor in it.
“After everything we’ve been through, you believe them over me?””
Nathaniel’s expression didn’t change.
“Answer the question.””
Vanessa looked away.
That was when I knew.
She had answers.
Maybe not all of them.
Maybe not the truth.
But answers.
The security officer held the report carefully.
“We need to contact the hospital and verify the original statement.””
Nathaniel nodded.
“Do it.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She immediately realized what she had done.
Nathaniel noticed too.
“No?””
She swallowed.
“I mean… there’s no reason to involve more people.””
“Why?””
“Because this is a private family matter.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
A private family matter.
After years of secrets.
After manipulating my life.
Now she wanted privacy.
Nathaniel walked closer.
“My daughter was almost taken from her mother.””
His eyes were cold.
“That stopped being private the moment you touched her life.””
Vanessa flinched.
Lily suddenly stirred beside me.
“Mommy?””
I looked down.
“Yes, baby?””
“Why is everyone mad?””
My heart broke.
Because she was four.
She should have been worried about bedtime.
Not adults fighting over who had lied.
I lifted her into my arms.
“It’s okay.””
But even as I said it, I wasn’t sure.
Nathaniel saw me holding her.
Something changed in his face.
Regret.
Pain.
Maybe even guilt.
“I’m sorry, Lily.””
She looked at him.
The little girl who barely knew him.
The little girl whose entire world had changed in one night.
“Why?””
Nathaniel crouched down slowly.
“Because grown-ups made mistakes.””
Lily studied him.
Then asked the question only a child would ask.
“Are you my daddy?””
The room went silent.
Nathaniel looked at me.
I looked back.
Four years of secrets.
Four years of fear.
Four years of wondering if this moment would ever happen.
Finally, I nodded.
“Yes.””
Nathaniel’s eyes became glassy.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
Lily looked confused.
“You’re the man from the big house?””
A small, broken smile appeared on his face.
“Yes.””
“You’re the one who gave Mommy the job?””
“Yes.””
She tilted her head.
“Why didn’t you come see me?””
The question destroyed him.
Because there was no simple answer.
No answer a child should ever have to hear.
Nathaniel looked down.
“I didn’t know.””
Lily accepted that easier than any adult would.
Children believed people when they wanted to.
“Okay.””
She rested her head against my shoulder.
And somehow, that simple word hurt more than anger.
Nathaniel stood.
His eyes were wet.
He quickly looked away.
Then the security officer returned from making the call.
“Mr. Cross.””
Nathaniel turned.
“Yes?””
“The hospital located the nurse.””
Everyone froze.
My grip tightened around Lily.
“She’s alive?””
“Yes.””
Nathaniel stepped forward.
“Where is she?””
“She lives outside the city now.””
“Can we contact her?””
The officer hesitated.
“She agreed to speak.””
Vanessa immediately reacted.
“No.””
Nathaniel turned.
“Again with that word.””
“She’s lying.””
“How do you know?””
“Because she’s old. Her memory may be unreliable.””
The security officer looked down.
“She specifically mentioned Ms. Cross when we called.””
Vanessa went silent.
Nathaniel noticed.
“You knew she remembered.””
“No.””
“You knew.””
Vanessa looked angry now.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
“Then explain.””
She didn’t.
Because she couldn’t.
Nathaniel picked up his phone.
“Arrange a meeting.””
The officer nodded.
But before he could leave, Vanessa spoke.
“You really think this woman will tell you the truth?””
Nathaniel looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because unlike you, she has nothing to gain.””
That sentence hit her.
Hard.
The meeting with the nurse was arranged for the next morning.
But no one slept.
Not really.
I stayed in the guest room with Lily.
The room was beautiful.
Too beautiful.
A giant bed.
Soft blankets.
A view of the city.
But Lily kept waking up.
Every few hours.
“Mommy?””
“I’m here.””
“Are you mad?””
“No.””
“Is the pretty lady mad?””
I knew exactly who she meant.
“No.””
I paused.
Then corrected myself.
“Yes.””
Lily looked sad.
“Did I do something?””
My heart broke.
I pulled her close.
“No, baby.””
I kissed her forehead.
“You did nothing.””
She was quiet.
Then:
“Do I get a daddy now?””
I closed my eyes.
That question stayed with me.
Because I didn’t know.
Not completely.
Nathaniel might be her biological father.
But being a father was more than DNA.
It was showing up.
It was protecting.
It was choosing.
And he had lost four years.
But maybe he wasn’t the only one who had lost them.
Maybe Lily had too.
The next morning, Nathaniel arrived early.
He stood outside the guest room door.
When he saw Lily asleep beside me, he stopped.
He didn’t enter.
He just watched.
Like he was afraid the moment would disappear.
I stepped outside quietly and closed the door.
“You should wake her.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because she finally looks peaceful.””
I looked at him.
For the first time, I didn’t see the billionaire.
I saw a man.
A father.
A man grieving years he could never get back.
“I’m sorry.””
He looked at me.
“For what?””
“For not telling you.””
He was quiet.
Then he said:
“I’m angry.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“But not only at you.””
That surprised me.
He looked toward the room.
“I’m angry because I missed her first steps.””
His voice cracked.
“Her first words.””
I looked down.
“I was there.””
“I know.””
He swallowed.
“And I hate that someone made you think you had to carry all of that alone.””
Before I could answer, footsteps came from the hallway.
Vanessa.
She looked exhausted.
But her eyes were sharp.
“I need to talk to both of you.””
Nathaniel immediately became guarded.
“No.””
“You need to hear this.””
“I’ve heard enough.””
She shook her head.
“You haven’t.””
She looked at me.
“You think I’m the villain.””
I didn’t answer.
“Maybe I am.””
Nathaniel stared at her.
“But there’s something you don’t know.””
She reached into her coat pocket.
And pulled out a small envelope.
My heart dropped.
Another envelope.
Another secret.
She handed it to Nathaniel.
“I kept this because I thought I could fix everything.””
He didn’t take it.
“What is it?””
Vanessa looked at Lily’s bedroom door.
Then back at him.
“The truth about why Lily was taken from the hospital records.””
Nathaniel’s expression changed.
“Taken?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Because someone wanted you to believe Emma was gone.””
My blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa looked at me.
For the first time, she looked afraid of something other than being exposed.
“I’m saying…”
She lowered her voice.
“I wasn’t the person who started this.””
Nathaniel took the envelope.
“Then who was?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
At the security cameras.
At the locked doors.
Then whispered:
“The person who ordered me to erase Lily’s existence.””
Nathaniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
His face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
He turned the photograph around.
And my heart stopped.
Because the picture showed Nathaniel’s father.
A man who had died five years earlier.
Standing outside the hospital.
Holding newborn Lily.
May you like
And written on the back were six words:
*“The heir must never be discovered.””*
