Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The second red folder sat in Nathaniel’s hand like it weighed a hundred pounds.

Nobody spoke.

The ballroom that had been filled with laughter only minutes earlier now felt like a courtroom.

Every person was waiting for a verdict.

Vanessa’s face had lost all the confidence she carried when she walked into a room.

The glamorous woman in the diamond gown was gone.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Real fear.

Nathaniel looked at the security officer.

“Where exactly did you find this?””

The man swallowed.

“In your private office, sir.””

“My office is locked during events.””

“Yes, sir.””

Nathaniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Then how did you get inside?””

The security officer looked uncomfortable.

“I checked the access logs.””

“And?””

He glanced at Vanessa.

Then away.

“Ms. Cross entered your office twice tonight.””

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Nathaniel didn’t look at her.

“Twice?””

The security officer nodded.

“Yes, sir.””

“What time?””

“First time was thirty minutes before guests arrived. Second time was about ten minutes ago.””

Ten minutes ago.

That was right before the confrontation.

Right before the red folder appeared behind the champagne table.

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa wasn’t just hiding something.

She had been moving pieces around.

Planning.

“Nathaniel, this is a misunderstanding,” Vanessa said.

He finally looked at her.

“You keep using that word.””

Her lips parted.

“Because it is.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

And somehow that was worse.

“Because every time someone gets close to the truth, you call it a misunderstanding.””

Vanessa stared at him.

The guests around us shifted uncomfortably.

Some looked away.

Others watched like they were afraid to blink.

I hated that part.

The way wealthy people could turn someone’s pain into entertainment.

Nathaniel opened the second folder.

The first page was covered with information.

Names.

Dates.

Photographs.

His eyes moved slowly.

Then stopped.

“Emma.””

Hearing my name made my entire body tense.

“Yes?””

“Come here.””

I hesitated.

Then I walked closer.

Lily held my hand tightly.

I didn’t let go.

Nathaniel turned the folder slightly.

Not enough for everyone to see.

Enough for me.

The first document was a private investigation report.

My name was written across the top.

Emma Carter.

I felt sick.

“What is this?””

Nathaniel didn’t answer immediately.

He kept reading.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“You hired someone to investigate her?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I had questions.””

“You had questions?””

Her expression hardened.

“Yes.””

“About my employee?””

“About someone who has had access to your life for years.””

I stepped back.

“Access?””

The word hurt.

Because that was exactly how she saw me.

Not as a person.

Not as a mother.

As a threat.

Vanessa turned toward me.

“You want everyone to believe you’re innocent, but you’ve been hiding things too.””

I felt Lily’s fingers tighten around mine.

“Enough.””

Nathaniel’s voice stopped her.

He looked at me.

“Emma, what did she find?””

I looked at the folder.

Then at Lily.

Then back at him.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

My voice became firmer.

“I didn’t know she was investigating me. I didn’t know there was a DNA test. I didn’t know there were reports.””

Nathaniel watched me carefully.

I had spent years learning how to read him.

But now I couldn’t tell what he was thinking.

“You never told me about Lily’s father.””

I swallowed.

“No.””

“Why?””

Because the answer wasn’t simple.

Because some memories were wounds that never closed.

Because some people left behind more damage than explanations.

I looked down.

“When Lily was born, her father wasn’t there.””

Nathaniel waited.

“He disappeared before I could tell him I was pregnant.””

A few guests stopped pretending not to listen.

“He never came back?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“You expect people to believe that?””

My eyes hardened.

“I don’t care what you believe.””

“You should.””

She stepped closer.

“Because if he disappeared, why did you keep his identity secret?””

“Because I didn’t want Lily growing up knowing someone chose not to be there.””

That answer silenced even Vanessa for a second.

Then she recovered.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

“You’re protecting someone.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than if she had.

Nathaniel noticed too.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“You know something.””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I know what the reports say.””

“Then tell me.””

She hesitated.

That hesitation said everything.

Nathaniel closed the folder.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa looked around.

Then lowered her voice.

“I didn’t want to do this here.””

“You brought it here.””

“I was trying to protect our future.””

“Our future?””

Her eyes softened.

“Nathaniel, think about what happens if this gets out.””

I frowned.

“If what gets out?””

Vanessa ignored me.

“Your reputation. Your company. Your family name.””

Nathaniel stared at her.

“You’re worried about my reputation?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You’re worried about yours.””

The accusation hit her.

And she hated that he was right.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I love you.””

The words sounded practiced.

Like something she had said many times before.

Nathaniel’s face didn’t change.

“If you loved me, you wouldn’t have done this.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Lily.

And something dark crossed her face.

“I found out before you did.””

My heart sank.

“Found out what?””

Vanessa looked directly at Nathaniel.

“That Lily’s DNA matches yours.””

The room exploded.

A glass fell somewhere behind us.

Someone gasped.

I felt like the floor moved beneath my feet.

Nathaniel didn’t react at first.

He just stared.

“You already knew?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I ran the test because I suspected.””

“And?””

She looked at him.

“And the results confirmed it.””

My breath caught.

Lily.

My daughter.

His daughter.

A thousand thoughts crashed through my mind.

The hospital room four years ago.

The tiny baby I held alone.

The nights I cried silently so she wouldn’t hear.

The questions I never answered.

Nathaniel looked at me.

Not with anger.

With pain.

“Emma.””

I couldn’t speak.

Because there was something else.

Something I had never told anyone.

Something I had buried for four years.

Vanessa saw it.

And her eyes sharpened.

“You never told him.””

I looked at her.

“Stop.””

“You never told him because you knew.””

“Knew what?””

Nathaniel asked.

I closed my eyes.

Because this was the moment I had spent years fearing.

Not because of Nathaniel.

Because of Lily.

“Emma?””

I opened my eyes.

Nathaniel was looking at me.

Waiting.

“I knew who Lily’s father was.””

The words came out barely above a whisper.

The entire room went silent.

Nathaniel stared.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

I looked at Lily.

My little girl.

The reason I had stayed quiet.

The reason I had carried everything alone.

“Because the night I found out I was pregnant…”

I stopped.

My voice broke.

“Someone told me you were never coming back.””

Nathaniel frowned.

“What?””

I looked at Vanessa.

And she went completely still.

Because she knew what I was about to say.

“I was told you didn’t want to know.””

Nathaniel’s eyes moved slowly to Vanessa.

“Who told you that?””

I couldn’t answer.

I didn’t need to.

Because Vanessa’s face already did.

Nathaniel took one step toward her.

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Was it you?””

Vanessa said nothing.

And that silence was the answer.

Then Nathaniel’s phone suddenly rang.

The screen lit up.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Panicked.

Urgent.

I couldn’t hear everything.

Only Nathaniel’s reaction.

His face changed.

“What do you mean she wasn’t the only one?””

Everyone watched him.

He turned away slightly.

“Say that again.””

A long pause.

Then:

“When?””

Another pause.

His hand tightened around the phone.

“No. Don’t touch anything. I’m coming there now.””

He ended the call.

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

Nathaniel looked at the red folders.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at me.

His voice was low.

“The hospital records from the night Lily was born…”

He swallowed.

“They found another name on the file.””

My heart stopped.

“What name?””

May you like

Nathaniel stared at me.

“A second mother.””
