Chapter 6: The Photograph Hidden Under the Floor

The mansion had never felt so quiet.

Not even during the nights when storms shook the windows.

Not even during the moments when I walked through the empty halls after everyone had gone to sleep.

Because silence was different when it was filled with secrets.

The ballroom was cleared within minutes after the phone call ended.

The guests left with whispers following behind them.

The musicians packed away their instruments.

The cameras stopped recording.

But the damage remained.

A red folder.

A DNA report.

A birth record.

And a woman standing in the center of the room who had spent four years controlling a story that was never hers to tell.

Vanessa.

Nathaniel had not spoken to her since the doctor’s call.

That scared me more than anger would have.

Anger was temporary.

Disappointment lasted longer.

The security team escorted everyone away except the people who needed to stay.

Nathaniel.

Me.

Lily.

And Vanessa.

The four of us sat in the private study.

The same room where Nathaniel made billion-dollar decisions.

The same room where employees whispered about his impossible attention to detail.

Tonight, there was no business meeting.

No investors.

No contracts.

Just the truth.

Lily sat beside me on the couch, holding her rabbit against her chest.

She was tired.

Confused.

And completely unaware that the adults around her were fighting over pieces of a history she never asked for.

Nathaniel stood near the window.

The city lights reflected against the glass.

“Start from the beginning.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Nathaniel…”

“Start.””

His voice was calm.

But there was no room to negotiate.

She looked down.

For the first time since I met her, she looked smaller.

“I didn’t mean for things to become this complicated.””

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because people always said that after they had already destroyed everything.

Nathaniel turned.

“That’s not an answer.””

Vanessa took a breath.

“I found out Emma was pregnant before Lily was born.””

My fingers tightened around Lily’s hand.

“How?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Your medical records.””

I froze.

“You accessed my records?””

“I was trying to understand what was happening.””

“No.””

Nathaniel interrupted.

“You were spying.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“I knew Emma worked in the house. I knew she was around you every day.””

Her eyes moved toward him.

“And I knew you trusted her.””

There was something bitter in the way she said it.

Like trust itself was an offense.

“I became worried.””

“Worried about what?”” Nathaniel asked.

She hesitated.

Then said:

“That you would choose her.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

Not because I was surprised.

Because finally, she admitted it.

This had never been about protecting Nathaniel.

It had always been about losing control.

“You were jealous,” I whispered.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I was realistic.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You were afraid.””

Her face tightened.

Nathaniel watched her carefully.

“Keep going.””

Vanessa looked away.

“When Lily was born, I thought the problem would solve itself.””

My stomach turned.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

Nathaniel stepped forward.

“What does that mean, Vanessa?””

“I thought Emma would leave.””

“Why?””

“Because people like her always leave.””

The words were cruel.

But she said them like they were facts.

Like she truly believed people like me were temporary.

Nathaniel’s expression changed.

“That’s what you think of her?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I think I know how the world works.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You know how your world works.””

The silence afterward was heavy.

Then Vanessa looked at Lily.

“She was supposed to be gone.””

My heart stopped.

Nathaniel’s face hardened.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa immediately looked away.

“I didn’t hurt her.””

Nobody had accused her of that.

But she answered too quickly.

And that was worse.

I stood.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I convinced you Nathaniel didn’t want you.””

The room became colder.

“You made that phone call.””

“Yes.””

My breath caught.

She admitted it.

Just like that.

After years of wondering.

After years of asking myself why Nathaniel never came.

“You destroyed my life.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I protected my future.””

The honesty was terrifying.

Nathaniel stared at her.

“You stole four years from me.””

“I was trying to save us.””

“No.””

His voice was low.

“You were trying to save yourself.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with frustration.

“You don’t understand what would have happened.””

“What would have happened?””

She looked at him.

“You would have married her.””

The words shocked everyone.

Even Vanessa.

Because she had said them without thinking.

Nathaniel stared.

“Married who?””

She looked toward me.

The room froze.

I shook my head.

“No.””

But Vanessa continued.

“You loved her.””

“I didn’t.””

The answer came immediately.

Too immediately.

Nathaniel looked at me.

Then back at Vanessa.

“You don’t know what I felt.””

“I saw it.””

She stepped closer.

“The way you looked at her. The way you protected her. The way you cared about Lily before you even knew she was yours.””

Nathaniel’s face became unreadable.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You never looked at me that way.””

Nobody spoke.

Because buried beneath all the lies was something painfully human.

She was still wrong.

But she was hurt.

And hurt people could become dangerous.

Nathaniel walked toward the desk.

“Where is the original birth certificate?””

Vanessa went silent.

“Vanessa.””

“I don’t have it.””

“You signed it.””

“I said I don’t have it.””

Nathaniel looked at the security officer.

“Search the house.””

Vanessa’s head snapped up.

“You can’t do that.””

“I own the house.””

“You’re treating me like a criminal.””

He looked at her.

“I’m treating you like someone who has hidden evidence from me.””

The security team left.

Minutes passed.

No one spoke.

Lily eventually leaned against me.

“Mommy?””

“Yes?””

“Can we go home?””

That question broke my heart.

Because she didn’t mean the apartment we lived in.

She meant somewhere safe.

Somewhere without fear.

I kissed her forehead.

“We will.””

Nathaniel heard.

His expression changed.

“You’re not leaving.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know what else to do.””

“You stay.””

I shook my head.

“You just found out I kept your daughter from you.””

His face softened.

“And you just found out someone lied to you for four years.””

I looked away.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“But Vanessa should never have made that choice for either of us.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because for years, I had carried guilt.

I had told myself I should have been braver.

I should have fought harder.

But now I realized something.

Someone had been moving the walls around me.

Making every path disappear.

The security officer suddenly returned.

His face was pale.

“Mr. Cross.””

Nathaniel stood.

“What?””

“We found something.””

He held a small plastic evidence bag.

Inside was an old photograph.

Vanessa immediately stood.

“No.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Nathaniel took the bag.

The photograph inside showed a hospital room.

A newborn baby.

A younger version of me.

And beside the bed…

Vanessa.

My blood ran cold.

Because I had never seen that picture before.

Nathaniel stared at it.

“When was this taken?””

The security officer swallowed.

“Four years ago.””

Nathaniel looked at Vanessa.

“You were at the hospital?””

Vanessa said nothing.

He turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

His eyes moved across the words.

Then he stopped.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

Nathaniel didn’t answer.

He looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then back at the photograph.

Finally, he whispered:

“It says…”

His voice broke slightly.

“‘If anything happens to me, give the baby to her father.’”

My heart stopped.

“Her father?””

Nathaniel turned the photograph around.

The handwriting was mine.

But underneath it was another sentence.

A sentence I had never written.

A sentence someone else had added.

And when Nathaniel read it aloud, Vanessa’s face completely changed.

“‘The father must never know the truth about what happened that night.’”

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Nathaniel looked at Vanessa.

“What happened that night?””

Vanessa backed away.

And then the security officer’s phone rang again.

This time, he answered.

His expression changed almost instantly.

“Mr. Cross…”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“What now?””

The officer swallowed.

“The hospital has one more record.””

“What record?””

The man looked between Nathaniel and me.

“The original incident report from the night Lily was born.””

A pause.

“And it says Emma Carter was not the only person who disappeared from that hospital.””

Nathaniel frowned.

“Who else disappeared?””

The officer looked at Vanessa.

“A nurse.””

My blood turned cold.

“Why?””

The officer’s voice dropped.

“Because she claimed she saw someone try to take Lily before she could be discharged.””

Nathaniel stared.

“Who?””

The officer looked down at the report.

May you like

Then answered:

“The report names Vanessa Cross.””
