Chapter 3: The Man at the Gate
Marissa knew that voice.
For ten years, it had lived in the darkest corner of her memory.
She could still hear it through the hospital corridor, through the smell of antiseptic and the sound of machines beeping behind closed doors.
“Mrs. Bennett, you need to let us handle this.””
She had believed him then.
Now she stood frozen in her garden.
The man beyond the iron gate was older.
His hair was almost completely gray.
His face was thinner.
But there was no mistaking him.
“Dr. Whitmore,” Marissa whispered.
Daniel stepped in front of her.
“You're supposed to be dead.””
The old doctor gave a tired smile.
“That seems to be a popular rumor.””
Leo stared at him.
For the first time since he had entered the garden, he looked terrified.
Dr. Whitmore's eyes found him immediately.
Not Ethan.
Not Marissa.
Leo.
“Hello, Benjamin.””
The boy's face went blank.
Marissa's heart stopped.
“Benjamin?””
Leo took a step backward.
“My name is Leo.””
The doctor looked at him for a long moment.
“I know what they call you.””
Daniel moved toward the gate.
“You're not coming inside.””
Whitmore looked past him.
“I didn't come for you.””
He pointed toward Marissa.
“I came because she finally found the truth.””
Marissa approached slowly.
“What did you do?””
The doctor's expression tightened.
“I made the mistake of believing I could fix something after I had already helped break it.””
“You told me my son died.””
“I know.””
“You signed the death certificate.””
“I know.””
“You let me bury an empty coffin.””
“I know.””
Her voice rose.
“You let me spend ten years believing my baby was gone!””
Whitmore lowered his head.
“I know.””
Daniel grabbed the gate.
“You're going to explain everything.””
Whitmore looked at him.
“Not here.””
“You don't get to choose where this conversation happens.””
A sudden gust moved through the garden.
The birthday decorations rattled overhead.
The candles on Ethan's cake flickered.
Whitmore glanced at the guests.
“Then at least get the children away from this.””
Daniel nodded toward a security guard.
“Take Ethan and Leo inside.””
Ethan refused.
“No.””
Daniel turned.
“Ethan.””
“He's my brother.””
The words stopped everyone.
Ethan walked to Leo and stood beside him.
“You're not going anywhere without him.””
Leo looked at Ethan.
Something softened in his face.
Whitmore watched them both.
For a moment, he looked almost ashamed.
“They really are identical,” he whispered.
Marissa's eyes narrowed.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before either of them was born.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“What are you talking about?””
Whitmore stepped closer to the gate.
“I wasn't the only doctor involved.””
Marissa felt a chill move down her back.
“Who else?””
Whitmore looked toward the house.
“Your husband's father.””
Daniel went still.
“My father died six years ago.””
“I know.””
“He had nothing to do with this.””
“He had everything to do with it.””
Marissa stared at Daniel.
“What is he saying?””
Daniel shook his head.
“My father was never involved in our medical decisions.””
Whitmore gave a bitter laugh.
“You believed that because he wanted you to.””
“Stop playing games.””
“I wish I could.””
The doctor reached inside his coat.
Every security guard tensed.
He slowly pulled out a small brown envelope.
“No weapon.””
He held it against the bars.
“This is what I should have given you ten years ago.””
Marissa took one step forward.
“What is it?””
“The original birth records.””
Daniel looked at the envelope.
“Those were destroyed.””
“No.””
Whitmore slid the envelope through the bars.
“They were replaced.””
Marissa took it.
Her fingers shook as she opened the flap.
Inside was a folded document.
She unfolded it.
Her eyes moved down the page.
Mother: *Marissa Claire Bennett.*
Father: *Daniel James Bennett.*
Twin A: *Ethan Alexander Bennett.*
She kept reading.
Then she stopped.
Twin B:
Her breath caught.
The name had been crossed out in thick black ink.
Underneath it was another name.
*Benjamin Alexander Bennett.*
Marissa touched the page.
“Benjamin.””
Whitmore nodded.
“You named both boys before they were born.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I don't remember.””
“You were unconscious when the second delivery went wrong.””
Daniel took the paper from her.
His face changed as he read.
“What was wrong?””
“Nothing.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
“Nothing was wrong with the baby.””
Marissa stared at Whitmore.
“Then why did you tell me he died?””
The doctor looked toward Leo.
“Because someone paid me to make him disappear.””
Silence.
Even the wind seemed to stop.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?””
Whitmore hesitated.
“You don't understand the kind of man your father was.””
“Don't talk about my father.””
“He threatened my family.””
“You should have gone to the police.””
“I was a coward.””
Whitmore's voice cracked.
“I told myself I was protecting my children. I told myself your father couldn't hurt anyone if I cooperated.””
“And where did my son go?””
“To the Hales.””
Marissa clenched her fists.
“Graham Hale.””
“Yes.””
“Why him?””
“Because he was already working for your father.””
Daniel's eyes widened.
“He was a driver.””
“He was more than that.””
Leo suddenly spoke.
“My foster father hated you.””
Everyone looked at him.
Leo swallowed.
“He had a picture.””
“Of whom?”” Marissa asked.
“Of you.””
Marissa's chest tightened.
“What kind of picture?””
“You were holding a baby.””
Daniel stared at Leo.
“Did he tell you who the baby was?””
Leo shook his head.
“He said the baby ruined everything.””
Marissa covered her mouth.
Whitmore closed his eyes.
“I should have stopped it.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Why didn't you?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Three days after the children were separated.””
Whitmore reached into his coat again.
This time he pulled out a tiny photograph.
He held it through the gate.
Marissa took it.
It showed two newborn babies sleeping side by side.
One had a tiny hospital cap.
The other had a bandage above his eyebrow.
Ethan's scar.
Leo's scar.
Marissa's tears fell onto the photograph.
“They were together.””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
“Six days.””
Daniel stared.
“Six days?””
“They were born minutes apart.””
Whitmore's voice became quieter.
“Ethan was stronger. Benjamin struggled to breathe during his first night, but he recovered.””
“So he wasn't sick.””
“No.””
“He wasn't dying.””
“No.””
“He was stolen.””
Whitmore nodded.
“Yes.””
Marissa looked through the gate.
“By my father-in-law?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Whitmore didn't answer immediately.
Then he said, “Money.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“My father had more money than he could ever spend.””
“This wasn't about money.””
“Then what?””
“Control.””
Whitmore's eyes shifted toward Daniel.
“Your father believed your marriage was destroying the Bennett family.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“My marriage?””
“He wanted you to divorce Marissa.””
Marissa frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he believed you married beneath your family's expectations.””
Daniel's jaw clenched.
“So he stole my child because he didn't like my wife?””
“No.””
Whitmore looked directly at Marissa.
“He stole one child because he knew removing one would destroy the other.””
Marissa didn't understand.
“What does that mean?””
“He believed you would blame yourself. He believed Daniel would blame you. He expected the marriage to collapse.””
Daniel stared at the doctor.
“And when it didn't?””
“He made sure the boy disappeared permanently.””
Leo took a shaky breath.
“My foster father said my real father didn't want me.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“No.””
He moved toward the gate.
“I never knew you existed.””
Leo's chin trembled.
“That isn't what he said.””
Whitmore stepped closer.
“He lied.””
Leo looked at him.
“What was true?””
The doctor hesitated.
Then he answered.
“Your father spent ten years searching for you.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“What?””
Whitmore nodded.
“Your father never gave up.””
Marissa stared at Daniel.
“You knew?””
“No.””
“I thought you gave up after the funeral.””
“I never believed it was real.””
Daniel's voice broke.
“I searched every adoption agency. Every private clinic. Every hospital within three states.””
Marissa looked stunned.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because every time I asked questions, someone threatened you.””
Whitmore nodded slowly.
“That part is true.””
Daniel looked furious.
“Who threatened her?””
Whitmore's gaze fell.
“Graham Hale.””
Leo suddenly grabbed Ethan's arm.
“That's why he came back.””
Marissa turned.
“What do you mean?””
Leo looked at the front gate.
“He isn't here to apologize.””
The security guard ran toward them.
“Mr. Bennett!””
Daniel turned.
“What now?””
The guard pointed toward the driveway.
“There are two black SUVs approaching.””
Whitmore's face changed instantly.
“Lock every gate.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Who are they?””
The doctor looked toward Leo.
“The people who were supposed to make sure he was never found.””
A car screeched around the corner beyond the hedge.
Then another.
The garden erupted in panic.
Guests screamed.
Children began crying.
Security guards rushed toward the driveway.
Whitmore grabbed the gate.
“Get the boys inside!””
Daniel seized Ethan's hand.
Marissa reached for Leo.
But Leo suddenly stared at the road.
A man stepped from the first black SUV.
He was tall.
Broad-shouldered.
And there was a pale scar beneath his chin.
Leo whispered one word.
“Hale.””
The man lifted his head.
His eyes locked onto Leo.
Then he smiled.
May you like
“Happy birthday, Benjamin.””
And from somewhere inside the house, a gunshot shattered the glass.
