Chapter 7: The Empty Grave
The cemetery was only twelve minutes away.
But every second of the drive felt endless.
Rain had started falling, thin and cold, turning the windshield into a sheet of trembling silver. Detective Cole drove the lead vehicle. Daniel sat beside Marissa in the second car, while Ethan and Leo were secured in the back between two officers.
Neither boy spoke.
Marissa kept looking over her shoulder.
Leo was staring out the window.
Ethan had one hand wrapped around his brother's wrist.
“Are you scared?”” Ethan whispered.
Leo nodded.
“A little.””
Ethan squeezed his arm.
“Me too.””
“That helps.””
“How?””
“Because I thought I was the only one.””
Ethan smiled faintly.
“You're not.””
Ahead of them, blue police lights flashed between the trees.
The Bennett family cemetery sat behind a stone wall on the edge of town.
Daniel had been there only once since his father died.
He had hated the place.
Tonight, when the gates opened, he understood why.
The graveyard looked abandoned.
Mud covered the narrow path.
Several headstones leaned beneath the weight of overgrown ivy.
At the center stood the Bennett family mausoleum.
Except the iron doors were open.
And the grave directly behind it had been disturbed.
Detective Cole stepped out of her car.
“Stay inside,” she ordered.
Daniel ignored her.
“That’s my father's grave.””
“I know.””
“I’m going.””
Cole caught his arm.
“Mr. Bennett, we don't know what's waiting there.””
Daniel looked toward the cemetery.
“You've spent twenty years investigating people like my father.””
Cole released him.
“Stay behind me.””
Marissa followed.
The boys remained in the car.
At first.
Then Ethan opened the door.
“Ethan!”” Marissa shouted.
He stopped.
Leo climbed out behind him.
“We're not staying there,” Ethan said.
Daniel turned.
“Get back inside.””
“I want to know the truth.””
“You're ten.””
“I know.””
Ethan looked at Leo.
“So is he.””
Daniel stared at both boys.
Then at Marissa.
She gave him a helpless look.
Detective Cole sighed.
“Keep them behind us.””
They approached the grave.
A shovel lay in the mud.
Beside it was a black duffel bag.
Cole drew her weapon.
“Everyone stop.””
She crouched.
The bag was open.
Inside were old documents.
Photographs.
A small metal box.
And something wrapped in plastic.
Daniel recognized the photographs first.
They showed his father.
Then Graham Hale.
Then Dr. Whitmore.
And finally, one photograph that made him stumble.
It showed Marissa leaving the hospital eleven years ago.
She was holding Ethan.
The person standing beside her was blurred intentionally.
But Daniel knew the coat.
The same gray suit from the photograph in the hidden room.
“Who took these?”” Marissa whispered.
Cole carefully lifted the top photograph.
“Someone who was watching your family.””
A police officer approached.
“Detective.””
Cole stood.
“What?””
“We found footprints.””
“Where?””
“Behind the mausoleum.””
They followed him.
The footprints led toward the back wall.
Then stopped.
There was no gate.
No opening.
Nothing but wet stone.
Daniel frowned.
“How could someone get out?””
The officer shook his head.
“Maybe they didn't.””
Cole looked at the wall.
“Search it.””
Two officers began checking the stones.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed toward the ground.
“There.””
A narrow line in the mud.
Something metallic had scraped across it.
Cole crouched.
She brushed away wet leaves.
A small steel handle appeared.
She pulled.
A stone panel shifted.
The wall opened.
Behind it was a narrow tunnel.
Marissa stared.
“My God.””
Daniel looked at his father’s grave.
“He had a tunnel.””
Cole nodded.
“Looks like it.””
Then a sound came from inside.
A faint cough.
Everyone froze.
Cole raised her weapon.
“Police! Come out slowly!””
No answer.
Daniel's voice shook.
“Dad?””
Nothing.
They entered.
The tunnel smelled of wet earth and rust.
Ten yards in, it opened into a small underground chamber.
A single chair stood in the center.
On the chair was a man.
His hands were tied.
His head hung forward.
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Dad?””
The man lifted his face.
Daniel recoiled.
It wasn't his father.
It was Dr. Whitmore.
Marissa cried out.
“Whitmore?””
The doctor looked at them.
His face was bruised.
Blood ran from his temple.
“I told you,” he whispered.
Daniel rushed forward.
“You said you didn't come with us!””
Whitmore shook his head.
“I didn't.””
“Then how did you get here?””
Whitmore looked terrified.
“They took me.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“You're lying.””
“I wish I were.””
Cole cut the restraints.
“Can you walk?””
Whitmore nodded.
Daniel crouched beside him.
“Who did this?””
Whitmore looked past him.
Toward Leo.
The boy was standing at the entrance.
Whitmore's expression changed.
“Where is Graham?””
“Arrested.””
The doctor closed his eyes.
“You shouldn't have left him alive.””
Daniel stiffened.
“Why?””
Whitmore took a shaky breath.
“Because Hale doesn't work alone.””
Cole looked at him.
“We know.””
“No.””
Whitmore shook his head.
“You don't understand.””
He reached into his coat.
There was blood on the pocket.
He pulled out a photograph.
A man stood beside Graham Hale.
The same gray suit.
But this time his face was visible.
Daniel's breath caught.
Marissa stared at the photograph.
“That can't be.””
Cole took it.
“Who is he?””
Daniel answered.
“My father's attorney.””
Whitmore shook his head.
“Not anymore.””
“Who is he?””
The doctor whispered a name.
“Edward Vale.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“Vale died.””
“No.””
Whitmore looked at him.
“Your father made that story too.””
Cole immediately pulled out her phone.
“I'm checking the name.””
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“I've known him since I was a kid.””
“He knew you too,” Whitmore said.
“What does he want?””
“Control.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Whitmore looked at Leo.
“Because that's exactly what it is.””
Leo stepped closer.
“What did he want from me?””
The doctor hesitated.
Then he pointed to the metal box from the grave.
“That.””
Cole opened the box.
Inside was a small cassette recorder.
An old one.
No batteries.
She looked confused.
Whitmore said, “There are batteries in the bottom.””
Cole found them.
Inserted them.
Pressed play.
Static filled the chamber.
Then a man's voice emerged.
Daniel recognized his father immediately.
“My son will eventually discover the truth.””
A pause.
“If he does, the inheritance must remain intact.””
Marissa grabbed Daniel's arm.
The recording continued.
“The first boy will inherit everything.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Ethan looked confused.
“Which first boy?””
The voice answered the question.
“Ethan.””
Leo's face fell.
Then another voice entered.
Edward Vale.
“And Benjamin?””
Daniel stared.
His father's voice answered.
“Benjamin must never know he has a brother.””
Leo's eyes filled.
Marissa pulled him against her.
The recording continued.
“If Benjamin is ever found, the contingency will begin.””
Cole frowned.
“What contingency?””
Nobody answered.
The voice spoke again.
“If the second son returns, the first son's identity becomes vulnerable.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“What does that mean?””
Whitmore whispered:
“It means your father created a legal trap.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“What kind?””
“One son inherits the estate.””
“So?””
“The other has a claim under the original family trust.””
Daniel stared.
Whitmore continued.
“Your father made sure the trust could only be challenged if the second twin was proven alive.””
Marissa's face tightened.
“Then why hide him?””
“Because if he remained missing, Ethan would inherit everything without challenge.””
Daniel understood.
“Money.””
Whitmore nodded.
“And if Benjamin appeared?””
“Both could claim the estate.””
Leo looked between them.
“So that's why they wanted me gone.””
“Yes.””
A new sound came from the recorder.
A click.
Then Edward Vale's voice.
“There is one final problem.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“What problem?””
The answer came slowly.
“The boys cannot both be alive.””
Silence.
Ethan moved closer to Leo.
“They were going to kill one of us.””
Whitmore nodded.
“Yes.””
Marissa squeezed both boys against her.
“No one is touching my children.””
Suddenly, Cole's phone rang.
She answered.
“Detective Cole.””
Her expression changed.
“What?””
She stepped away.
Then looked back at Daniel.
“What's wrong?”” he asked.
She ended the call.
“The hospital called.””
Daniel's stomach dropped.
“Which hospital?””
“St. Vincent's.””
He stared.
“Why?””
“Graham Hale was being transported there after the arrest.””
Marissa whispered, “And?””
Cole's voice became quiet.
“He's gone.””
Daniel frowned.
“Gone where?””
“He was still handcuffed.””
Cole looked at the boys.
“The ambulance never arrived.””
The cemetery fell silent.
Then headlights appeared beyond the trees.
One vehicle.
Black.
Moving slowly through the gates.
Cole drew her weapon.
The car stopped.
The driver's door opened.
A man in a gray suit stepped into the rain.
Edward Vale looked across the cemetery.
He smiled.
Then he raised one hand.
Behind him, three men stepped from the car.
Each was carrying a gun.
Vale's eyes settled on Leo.
“Benjamin,” he called softly.
“You've caused me a great deal of trouble.””
Then his gaze shifted to Ethan.
“But your brother is the real problem.””
Ethan stepped in front of Leo.
Vale smiled.
“Exactly.””
May you like
He pointed at him.
“And tonight, I'm here to fix it.””
