Chapter 8: The Last Will
Ethan did not move.
Neither did Leo.
Rain slid down Vale's gray suit as he stood beyond the cemetery gate, surrounded by armed men.
Detective Cole raised her weapon.
“Drop yours.””
Vale smiled.
“I don't think that's going to happen.””
“Edward Vale, you're under arrest.””
“For what?””
“Kidnapping. Conspiracy. Assault. Murder.””
Vale's smile faded.
“Careful, Detective. You haven't proven any of those.””
Cole kept her gun steady.
“We'll prove them.””
Vale glanced toward the ambulance parked near the road.
Then toward Daniel.
“Do you really want to do this here?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You've already done worse.””
Vale studied him.
“You look exactly like your father when you're angry.””
“My father tried to murder me.””
“He tried to preserve your family.””
“He tried to kill my son.””
Vale's eyes shifted to Ethan.
“Your father never wanted him dead.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“The recording says otherwise.””
Vale remained calm.
“Recordings can be edited.””
Whitmore stepped forward.
“You were there.””
Vale's expression changed.
“You.””
“I remember you,” Whitmore said.
“You should.””
“You threatened my family.””
“And you still obeyed.””
Whitmore's jaw tightened.
“Not anymore.””
Vale looked around the cemetery.
“You're all making the same mistake.””
Marissa held Leo closer.
“What mistake?””
“Thinking the truth changes what was already signed.””
Daniel frowned.
“What did you sign?””
Vale looked at him.
“The inheritance agreement.””
“I never signed anything.””
“Not you.””
He looked at Ethan.
“Your father did.””
Ethan's face tightened.
“I don't care about the money.””
Vale smiled.
“You will.””
“I don't want it.””
“That isn't your decision.””
Leo stepped forward.
“Then give it to me.””
Everyone turned.
Vale stared at him.
Leo's voice shook, but he didn't back away.
“If the money is the reason you wanted me gone, take it.””
Marissa grabbed his shoulder.
“Leo.””
“No, Mom.””
The word escaped naturally.
Marissa froze.
Leo seemed surprised he'd said it.
Then Marissa's eyes filled.
She pulled him against her.
Vale watched them.
“Interesting.””
Daniel stepped between them and Vale.
“You don't come near my children.””
Vale sighed.
“Daniel, this was never supposed to become emotional.””
“You kidnapped my son.””
“I moved him.””
“You stole ten years from him.””
“I protected him.””
“From what?””
“From you.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“Why?””
Vale's expression changed for the first time.
“Because your father knew what would happen if both boys survived.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You keep saying that.””
“Then listen.””
Vale stepped closer to the gate.
“The Bennett Foundation wasn't just a charity.””
Daniel stared.
“My father's foundation?””
“It controlled accounts across six states.””
“So?””
“So your father used those accounts to hide illegal transfers.””
Cole looked sharply at Vale.
“You're talking about money laundering.””
“Yes.””
Daniel stared.
“How much?””
“More than enough to destroy every person connected to it.””
Marissa whispered, “Including you?””
Vale smiled.
“Especially me.””
Whitmore looked at Daniel.
“Your father built the foundation after the birth of the twins.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“Why?””
“Because he needed a legal way to move ownership.””
Vale nodded.
“Your father was planning to transfer everything into Ethan's name.””
“Then why involve Leo?””
“Because Leo was the insurance policy.””
Daniel frowned.
Vale continued.
“If anything happened to Ethan, the trust would automatically pass to Benjamin.””
Leo stared.
“So I was the backup.””
“Yes.””
The words hit him harder than any accusation.
Marissa immediately turned toward him.
“You were never a backup.””
Vale shrugged.
“That is how the paperwork described him.””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“Show me.””
Vale reached into his coat.
Cole raised her gun.
“Slowly.””
Vale pulled out a sealed envelope.
He held it between two fingers.
“Original trust documents.””
Daniel looked at the seal.
The Bennett family crest.
“Where did you get that?””
“Your father gave it to me.””
“When?””
“Three days before he died.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“He died six years ago.””
Vale nodded.
“And he knew he wouldn't live much longer.””
Daniel stared.
“You're lying.””
Vale smiled.
“Ask yourself why the grave was empty.””
Everything stopped.
Marissa looked at him.
“What?””
Vale's expression remained calm.
“Your father isn't buried there.””
Daniel went pale.
Cole lowered her gun slightly.
“What did you say?””
Vale pointed toward the grave.
“The coffin contains someone else.””
Marissa whispered, “Why?””
“Because your father was still alive when the funeral happened.””
Daniel's voice cracked.
“No.””
Vale nodded.
“He left the country.””
“You expect us to believe that?””
“I expect you to examine the coffin.””
Cole immediately turned to the officers.
“Open it.””
Daniel grabbed her arm.
“Wait.””
Vale smiled.
“You're finally asking the right question.””
“What question?””
“Where has your father been for six years?””
Daniel stared at him.
Vale looked past the family.
“At first, he hid overseas.””
“Then?””
“He came back.””
“When?””
“Last month.””
Marissa's face lost its color.
“He's alive?””
Vale nodded.
“And he's coming here.””
A low rumble of thunder rolled overhead.
Then a black sedan appeared beyond the far cemetery wall.
It stopped.
The rear door opened.
An old man stepped out.
He walked slowly with a cane.
Daniel couldn't breathe.
The gray hair.
The narrow shoulders.
The familiar posture.
The face he had last seen inside a coffin.
His father.
Charles Bennett.
Alive.
Daniel's knees almost buckled.
“Dad?””
Marissa whispered, “That's impossible.””
Charles looked across the rain.
His eyes found Daniel.
Then Ethan.
Then Leo.
He stopped.
For the first time, the certainty on his face disappeared.
He stared at the second boy.
“Benjamin.””
Leo stepped backward.
“You know me?””
Charles closed his eyes.
“I gave you a name.””
Marissa's voice shook.
“You gave him away.””
Charles looked at her.
“I saved him.””
“You stole him!””
“I kept him alive!””
Marissa shouted, “You stole my baby!””
Charles struck the ground with his cane.
“You don't understand what was coming.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What was coming?””
Charles looked at him.
“Your father's enemies.””
“You were my enemy.””
“No.””
Charles's face tightened.
“I was the only person trying to save the family.””
Daniel laughed.
“You faked your death.””
“I had to.””
“You let us bury another man.””
“I had no choice.””
Daniel pointed toward Leo.
“You had a choice.””
Charles's eyes moved to the boy.
Something like regret crossed his face.
“Yes.””
His voice softened.
“That was the choice I failed to make.””
The cemetery fell silent.
Charles continued.
“Your grandfather wanted Ethan to inherit everything.””
Daniel said nothing.
“He feared Benjamin would eventually challenge the trust.””
“And you?””
“I disagreed.””
“Then why give him away?””
Charles looked at Leo.
“Because if I kept you both, he would have killed one of you.””
Leo's face tightened.
“Who?””
Charles looked at Vale.
“Your grandfather's attorney.””
Vale's expression hardened.
“You're rewriting history.””
Charles laughed.
“You're still lying to everyone.””
Cole stepped between them.
“Enough.””
She pointed at Charles.
“You're coming with us.””
Charles looked at her.
“You have no idea what you're walking into.””
“I know what I see.””
“You see a family scandal.””
He pointed toward Vale.
“That man has been moving money through shell companies for fifteen years.””
Vale shook his head.
“Don't listen to him.””
Charles continued.
“He used the Foundation to finance private security operations.””
Cole frowned.
“Security operations?””
“Kidnappings.””
The word echoed.
Leo's face went pale.
Charles looked at him.
“The children were leverage.””
Marissa whispered, “The twenty-three missing children.””
Charles nodded.
“Some were taken to control their parents.””
Daniel stared.
“And Leo?””
“He was the first.””
Leo looked down.
“I was a test.””
Charles said nothing.
That silence was answer enough.
Ethan suddenly stepped forward.
“You took my brother.””
Charles looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you take me too?””
“Because you were the heir.””
Ethan shook his head.
“I don't want your money.””
Charles stared.
“You don't understand.””
“I understand enough.””
Ethan moved closer to Leo.
“He's my brother.””
Charles's face softened.
“I know.””
“And he's staying with us.””
Charles looked at Daniel.
Then at Marissa.
Then at the two boys.
“I hope so.””
A gunshot cracked.
Everyone ducked.
Vale's men had fired.
One bullet struck the stone wall beside Charles.
Cole returned fire.
Officers shouted.
Daniel pulled Ethan and Leo behind the mausoleum.
Marissa dropped beside them.
“Stay down!””
Vale ran.
Charles turned toward him.
“Vale!””
Vale fired while retreating.
Charles stumbled.
“Dad!””
Daniel rushed toward him.
A dark stain spread across Charles's coat.
Daniel caught him before he fell.
“Stay with me.””
Charles grabbed his son's jacket.
“Listen.””
“I’m here.””
“The final document…”
Daniel leaned closer.
“Where?””
Charles struggled to breathe.
“Not at the house.””
“Where?””
“In the place where Benjamin was born.””
Daniel froze.
“The hospital?””
Charles nodded.
“Room 214.””
Marissa stared.
“That room was demolished.””
Charles shook his head.
“No.””
He gripped Daniel's hand.
“It's still there.””
His eyes shifted toward the boys.
“Inside the wall…”
“What?””
“Your mother's name.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“What does it say?””
Charles whispered the words.
“The truth about which baby was born first.””
Then his grip loosened.
His eyes closed.
“Dad?””
No answer.
Daniel looked up.
“Get an ambulance!””
Cole was already calling.
But before anyone could move, a phone rang.
Not Daniel's.
Not Cole's.
Not Marissa's.
Leo reached into the pocket of the old sweatshirt.
His face changed.
“That isn't mine.””
The phone kept ringing.
He pulled it out.
On the screen was one word:
*MOTHER.*
Marissa stared.
Her voice disappeared.
Leo slowly answered.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice whispered through the rain.
“Benjamin, don't trust the man with your father's face.””
Leo's eyes widened.
Marissa reached for the phone.
“Who is this?””
The caller paused.
Then said:
“It's the woman who gave birth to you.””
The line went dead.
Marissa looked at Leo.
Her face had gone completely white.
Because she knew that voice.
She had heard it before.
Eleven years ago.
May you like
In the hospital.
And it wasn't hers.
