Chapter 6: The Choice

The gun pointed directly at Ethan.

For one frozen second, Marissa couldn't breathe.

Then she moved.

She stepped between the gun and her son.

“Lower it.””

Graham Hale smiled.

“You've always been predictable, Marissa.””

Daniel grabbed her shoulder.

“Get behind me.””

“No.””

She didn't move.

Neither did Ethan.

Leo stood beside his twin, gripping his hand so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.

Hale's eyes moved from one boy to the other.

“They really do look alike.””

“Put the gun down,” Daniel said.

Hale laughed.

“You still think this is a negotiation?””

“You came into my home.””

“No.””

Hale shook his head.

“This house belonged to your father long before it belonged to you.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“My father is dead.””

“So was I.””

Hale's smile disappeared.

“Death is apparently negotiable in your family.””

Marissa looked at the gun.

“You said only one of them was supposed to inherit.””

“I said what your father told me.””

“Then why are you here?””

Hale's eyes settled on Leo.

“To finish what he started.””

Leo swallowed.

“What did he start?””

Hale's expression softened for the first time.

“You.””

The word made the boy flinch.

“You were never supposed to know you were a Bennett.””

Leo's voice shook.

“Then why did you let me find my mother?””

“I didn't.””

Hale looked at Whitmore.

“He did.””

Whitmore stepped forward.

“I had to.””

“You broke the agreement.””

“I broke a crime.””

Hale raised the gun toward him.

“Don't pretend this makes you brave.””

Whitmore didn't move.

“I've regretted it every day.””

“You should have regretted it sooner.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What agreement?””

Hale looked at him.

“Your father paid Whitmore to make the second birth disappear.””

Marissa's voice cracked.

“How much?””

Hale laughed quietly.

“You still think this was about money?””

“Then tell me what it was about.””

“Legacy.””

He glanced at Ethan.

“Your father believed the Bennett name could survive only if there was one unquestioned heir.””

Daniel's expression turned cold.

“He was obsessed with control.””

“He was obsessed with blood.””

Hale lifted the gun slightly.

“He believed two sons meant two futures.””

Leo whispered, “So he chose him.””

Hale nodded.

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at Leo.

“Why me?””

Hale turned toward him.

“Because you were born first.””

Ethan frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It didn't need to.””

Hale's eyes hardened.

“To your grandfather, the firstborn represented the legitimate line.””

Leo's face fell.

“I wasn't wanted.””

Marissa immediately turned toward him.

“That isn't true.””

Hale smiled.

“Isn't it?””

Marissa stared at Leo.

“No.””

She moved closer to him.

“You were stolen from me.””

Hale interrupted.

“You were given away.””

“No.””

Marissa's voice rose.

“You were stolen.””

She looked directly at Leo.

“You were my son the moment you were born.””

Leo's eyes filled.

Hale's jaw tightened.

“Sentimental.””

Daniel moved suddenly.

He grabbed the wooden chair beside him and threw it.

Hale fired.

The shot exploded through the nursery.

Marissa screamed.

The chair shattered against the wall.

Daniel slammed into Hale.

The gun flew from Hale's hand and skidded beneath the crib.

Ethan dragged Leo backward.

“Get down!””

Hale punched Daniel across the face.

Daniel staggered.

Hale reached for the gun.

Whitmore kicked it deeper under the crib.

“Run!””

Hale tackled him.

They crashed against the bookshelf.

Books rained onto the floor.

Marissa pulled the boys toward the door.

“Go!””

Ethan hesitated.

“Dad!””

“Go!””

They ran into the corridor.

Leo looked back.

Whitmore was struggling beneath Hale.

Daniel was on the floor.

Marissa grabbed both boys.

“Keep moving!””

They reached the staircase.

Then the house lights suddenly returned.

A siren sounded outside.

Hale stopped.

Police.

Daniel pushed himself upright.

“You're finished.””

Hale looked toward the stairwell.

“No.””

He smiled.

“I'm not.””

He pulled a second phone from his pocket.

One button.

He pressed it.

A loud explosion shook the house.

The boys screamed.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The basement door slammed shut.

Marissa rushed toward it.

“Ethan!””

“I’m here!””

“Leo?””

“Here!””

Daniel reached the emergency panel.

The door wouldn't open.

“It's locked.””

Whitmore came running from the nursery.

“What happened?””

“Blown a circuit.””

He tried the panel.

Nothing.

“There's another exit.””

“Where?””

“Laundry corridor.””

Daniel pointed.

“Lead us.””

Whitmore ran.

They moved through the basement as alarms blared overhead.

Ethan pulled Leo along.

“Keep up.””

Leo stumbled.

“I can't.””

“Yes, you can.””

“My foot—”

Ethan looked down.

Blood.

A piece of broken glass had cut Leo's shoe.

Ethan crouched.

“Get on my back.””

Leo stared at him.

“What?””

“Get on.””

“You can't carry me.””

“Try me.””

Leo climbed onto his brother's back.

Ethan stood.

He struggled.

But he didn't let go.

Marissa watched them.

For the first time that day, the resemblance was no longer what struck her.

It was the bond.

Two boys who had known each other for less than an hour were already protecting one another as if ten lost years could be crossed in a heartbeat.

They reached the laundry corridor.

A metal door stood ahead.

Whitmore unlocked it.

Cool night air rushed inside.

But two police officers were already waiting outside.

“Mr. Bennett?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Yes.””

One officer lowered his weapon.

“We received an emergency call.””

Daniel looked at Whitmore.

“From who?””

The officer frowned.

“From your phone.””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

It wasn't there.

He checked his pockets.

“My phone was taken.””

The officer looked confused.

“Then who called us?””

Nobody answered.

The second officer pointed toward the house.

“We found three men in the garage.””

Daniel stiffened.

“Three?””

“They've been restrained.””

“By whom?””

The officer hesitated.

“We don't know.””

Then another officer ran from the driveway.

“Detective!””

A woman appeared behind him.

She was in her forties, wearing a dark coat.

She approached Daniel.

“I'm Detective Sarah Cole.””

She held up an evidence bag.

Inside was a blood-stained photograph.

Daniel recognized it instantly.

The photograph showed his father standing beside Graham Hale.

And beside them stood another man.

Marissa stepped closer.

“Who is that?””

Detective Cole looked at her.

“That’s the person we've been trying to find for eleven years.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he's connected to a string of child disappearances.””

Leo suddenly went pale.

“Children?””

Detective Cole looked at him.

“Yes.””

“How many?””

Her expression became grim.

“Twenty-three.””

Marissa pulled Leo closer.

“My son isn't one of them.””

Cole glanced at the bracelet.

“Benjamin Bennett.””

“Yes.””

The detective's eyes widened.

“You already found him.””

Marissa nodded.

“Why?””

Cole looked at the house.

“Because eleven years ago, we thought Benjamin Bennett was one of the missing.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He was never missing.””

Cole looked at him.

“He was on a missing-child registry.””

Daniel stared.

“Who put him there?””

“Your father.””

Silence.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Why would he report his own grandson missing?””

Cole's eyes moved toward him.

“That's exactly the question.””

Whitmore stepped forward.

“You need to arrest Graham Hale.””

Cole nodded.

“We will.””

“He's armed.””

“Not anymore.””

Everyone turned.

Graham Hale was being led from the house by two officers.

His hands were cuffed.

Blood covered one side of his face.

But he was smiling.

He saw Leo.

Then Ethan.

Then Marissa.

“Congratulations,” he called.

Marissa stared at him.

“On what?””

Hale stopped walking.

“You found the boys.””

Daniel took a step forward.

Hale smiled wider.

“But you still haven't found the first body.””

Marissa froze.

“What body?””

Hale looked directly at her.

“The body your husband was supposed to become.””

Daniel's face went white.

Hale laughed as the officers pushed him toward the patrol car.

Detective Cole turned back to them.

“What did he mean?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Whitmore looked at the evidence bag again.

Then at Daniel.

“There's one thing we haven't considered.””

“What?””

“The man your father wanted dead wasn't just you.””

Daniel stared.

“Who else?””

Whitmore's eyes moved toward Leo.

“The other twin.””

Leo's face went pale.

“But I'm alive.””

Whitmore nodded.

“Exactly.””

He looked toward the dark house.

“Which means someone has spent ten years believing you're still dead.””

A police radio crackled.

Detective Cole listened.

Her expression changed.

“What's wrong?”” Marissa asked.

Cole lowered the radio.

“We just received another call.””

“From where?””

“The cemetery.””

Daniel frowned.

“Which cemetery?””

Cole looked at him.

“Your father's.””

May you like

Then she delivered the message that made every face around her go still.

“Someone is digging up his grave.””
