Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For several seconds, nobody touched the file.

The red light blinked against its black cover.

*PATIENT: DANIEL BENNETT — DEAD.*

Daniel stared at the words as if they belonged to someone else.

Marissa reached toward him.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t move.

His eyes remained fixed on the file.

“I’m alive,” he whispered.

Whitmore stepped forward.

“That’s what I thought.””

Daniel finally looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means,” Whitmore said carefully, “someone created a medical record saying you died.””

Marissa’s expression hardened.

“Why?””

Whitmore looked at the boys.

“Because dead men don't testify.””

Daniel snatched the file from the desk.

He opened it.

The first page contained his full name.

His birth date.

His blood type.

His medical history.

Then came photographs.

Daniel in a hospital bed.

Daniel unconscious.

Daniel with a breathing tube.

Daniel lying beneath a white sheet.

Marissa's hand flew to her mouth.

“That isn't possible.””

Daniel flipped another page.

There was a photograph of a man standing beside the hospital bed.

The man's face had been deliberately scratched out.

But his suit was unmistakable.

Marissa recognized it.

“I've seen that suit.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Where?””

“At your father's funeral.””

He stopped.

“My father’s funeral was six years ago.””

“I know.””

Marissa pointed at the photograph.

“That man was standing behind your family.””

Daniel stared harder.

A memory surfaced.

A man near the church doors.

Gray suit.

Silver tie.

He had never spoken.

Daniel had assumed he was one of his father's lawyers.

Now his stomach turned.

“Who is he?””

Whitmore shook his head.

“I don't know.””

“You knew enough to hide my son's existence.””

“I wasn't the one who made the decisions.””

Daniel slammed the file onto the desk.

“Then tell me who did!””

The boys flinched.

Marissa stepped between them.

“Daniel.””

He took a breath.

“Sorry.””

Ethan stared at the photograph.

“Dad?””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

“Why would someone pretend you died?””

Daniel crouched beside him.

“I don't know.””

Leo pointed at the file.

“Maybe because they were afraid you'd find me.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Maybe.””

Leo's eyes dropped.

“My foster father used to say your family was dangerous.””

Marissa knelt beside him.

“Did he ever tell you why?””

Leo hesitated.

“He said your family had secrets.””

Marissa gave a bitter smile.

“He wasn't wrong.””

A loud bang sounded somewhere above them.

Everyone froze.

Then came another.

Footsteps.

Fast.

Someone was running through the house.

Daniel stood immediately.

“We have to get out.””

Whitmore grabbed the hidden room door.

“No.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

“If they're already inside the house, the main entrance is compromised.””

Marissa looked toward the passage.

“Then where do we go?””

Whitmore pulled a ring of keys from his pocket.

“There's another exit.””

Ethan frowned.

“How many secret rooms does this house have?””

“Too many,” Daniel muttered.

Whitmore moved to the back wall.

He pressed his palm against a section of wood paneling.

A click sounded.

The entire panel swung open.

Behind it was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

Leo stared.

“You said there was a basement.””

“There is.””

Whitmore looked down.

“This is beneath it.””

Marissa took Ethan's hand.

“Stay close.””

They started down.

The staircase smelled of damp stone and old dust.

At the bottom was a concrete corridor.

Small lights flickered overhead.

Daniel looked around.

“This wasn't on the blueprints.””

“No,” Whitmore said.

“Who built it?””

Whitmore didn't answer.

Daniel stopped walking.

“Who built it?””

“Your father.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Of course.””

They moved again.

Halfway down the corridor, Leo stopped.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

He was staring at a small metal door.

Something was scratched into it.

Two letters.

*B.B.*

Leo touched them.

“What does that mean?””

Whitmore came closer.

“Benjamin Bennett.””

Leo stepped back.

“Why would my name be here?””

Before Whitmore could answer, the door opened.

Not from their side.

From inside.

A woman stood there.

Her face was bruised.

Her hands were tied.

Marissa gasped.

“Mrs. Collins!””

The housekeeper stumbled forward.

Daniel caught her.

“Are you all right?””

“They're here,” she whispered.

“How many?””

“I don't know.””

“Who?””

She looked over Daniel's shoulder.

Her eyes stopped on Leo.

She began to cry.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

Leo stared.

“You know me?””

Mrs. Collins nodded.

“I knew you before you could walk.””

Marissa's breath caught.

“What?””

Mrs. Collins covered her mouth.

“I wasn't supposed to say anything.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“About what?””

She looked at him.

“Your father ordered me to watch him.””

Leo recoiled.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Every time the Hales brought you to the property.””

Marissa stepped closer.

“You were seeing him?””

Mrs. Collins nodded.

“Not inside the house.””

She swallowed.

“There was a nursery beneath the east wing.””

Daniel stared.

“My father's house?””

“He kept the boy there when he was little.””

Leo's face drained.

“I lived here?””

“For a while.””

“When?””

Mrs. Collins looked at Marissa.

“Right after the hospital.””

Marissa closed her eyes.

“No.””

Mrs. Collins continued.

“You were told your son died.””

“I know.””

“But he didn't.””

Tears ran down Marissa's face.

“What happened to him?””

“They took him away after six months.””

“Why?””

“Because someone discovered the arrangement.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who?””

Mrs. Collins shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“You're lying.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I was seventeen years with this family. I learned long ago that people with money don't need to explain themselves.””

Daniel looked away.

Then he noticed something.

Mrs. Collins was clutching a small silver key.

“What's that?””

Her eyes widened.

“Nothing.””

Daniel took it.

“Mrs. Collins.””

She resisted.

“Please.””

“What does it open?””

She looked at Leo.

“His room.””

Leo stepped closer.

“My room?””

Mrs. Collins nodded.

“The room where they kept your things.””

Daniel looked at the door marked *B.B.*

“There?””

She nodded.

Marissa touched the metal.

“We're opening it.””

“No,” Mrs. Collins whispered.

“Why?””

“Because your father kept something there.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

The corridor seemed to grow colder.

Daniel inserted the key.

It fit.

The lock turned with a heavy click.

The door opened slowly.

Inside was a child's room.

Not a prison.

Not a storage room.

A nursery.

There was a small wooden bed.

A faded blue blanket.

A toy elephant.

A tiny bookshelf.

And on the wall, dozens of photographs.

Leo approached slowly.

He touched one.

It showed him sleeping as a baby.

Another showed Ethan in the Bennett nursery upstairs.

Same year.

Same month.

Same age.

Two babies growing up in different worlds.

Separated by a wall.

Separated by a lie.

Marissa broke down.

Daniel held her.

Leo stood beneath the photographs, unable to move.

Ethan walked beside him.

“This was your room.””

Leo whispered, “I don't remember it.””

Mrs. Collins answered softly.

“You were too young.””

Leo picked up the toy elephant.

He squeezed it.

Something inside clicked.

The elephant spoke.

A recording crackled through its tiny speaker.

A man's voice filled the room.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

His father.

“I don't care what you promised the doctor.””

Daniel froze.

Marissa looked at him.

The recording continued.

“The boy belongs to this family.””

Another voice answered.

Graham Hale.

“He'll grow up believing he's nobody.””

Daniel's fists tightened.

His father's voice returned.

“And the other boy?””

A pause.

“Ethan stays.””

“Why?””

“Because one heir is enough.””

Marissa covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“Once Daniel dies, everything transfers.””

Daniel went completely still.

The room fell silent.

Then his father's voice said the sentence that made every person in the room understand the real plan.

“Marissa will inherit the estate.””

A pause.

“Then she will marry someone I choose.””

Daniel looked at Marissa.

His face had gone white.

The recording continued.

“She will never know the second boy survived.””

The toy clicked off.

No one spoke.

Then Daniel whispered:

“My father wanted me dead.””

Whitmore nodded.

“And he wanted Marissa controlled.””

Marissa turned toward him.

“Who was he going to make me marry?””

Nobody answered.

Then Mrs. Collins slowly pointed toward the hallway.

“To Graham Hale.””

A violent crash echoed above them.

The lights suddenly went out.

Ethan grabbed Leo's hand.

In the darkness, someone began walking down the hidden staircase.

One step.

Then another.

Slow.

Unhurried.

Daniel moved in front of the boys.

“Who's there?””

A familiar voice answered from the darkness.

“You finally found the nursery.””

Graham Hale stepped into the faint emergency light.

Blood was running from his forehead.

He looked directly at Leo.

Then at Ethan.

And smiled.

“You want to know why your grandfather kept one twin and gave away the other?””

He lifted a gun.

“Because only one of you was supposed to inherit the Bennett fortune.””

The light above them flickered.

May you like

Hale's eyes settled on Ethan.

“And tonight, I'm here to make sure he never gets the chance.””
